Oh No! I might be deformed!

Just recently, I keep having terrible pains across the top of my buttocks and both butt cheeks go into charlie horses. Sometimes just one, sometimes both. Then I get these shooting pains down the back of my hammies. It happens every day as I'm running around the store putting all of the tills into the registers before we open. And most mornings when I attempt to get out of bed, then eases off a bit and starts again at work.

I can't bend over like normal. I have to sort of bend a little, shift my upper body to the right then continue bending down.

I made an appointment with my doctor finally after putting up with it for about 4 months. It's later this afternoon.

Weird thing. My daughter called me last night and told me her back went out on her again, except this time, she couldn't feel or use her legs at all! Long story short, she had an MRI and the diagnosis was that she has a congenital birth defect, congenital pars deformity. Basically the top of her pelvic bone did not fuse with her spine, or something like that. And now, her lower vertebrae are tilted downwards and her dics are bulging.

Since she fell off the the high bars in gymnastics as a teen and suffered a stress fracture, she has had intermittent back pain which increased in frequency since her car accident from the tornado. Then what I mentioned above.

Here's the kicker, her doctor told her that this condition, more times than not, is genetic/hereditary. He asked her if anyone in her family was suffering from lower back/hip pain. She answered her mom started with some recently. He told her that makes sense as most people with this deformity don't know they have it til much later in life as they age. It goes undetected. So he told her to tell me and have that checked.

I already had my appointment made for today, how convenient.

I'm just flabbergasted! I might be deformed.

I guess, I'll just have to wait and see what my physician says in a couple of hours...

Sigh...

  • I had to read that part 2x. lol

On a more serious note, we are all deformed.

Wait - ok, really now, on a more serious note, I hope the appointment goes well and should you also have this issue that there is something not too costly or stressful to endure that helps you to alleviate the problem.

I've had back spasm issues myself that leave me unable to walk upright. Anything hips and spine can be tough.

Wishing you good thoughts on that appointment.

    • Hahaha!

Actually, for as fast as I was typing, I'm pleased I only had one typo, but what a doozy, lol!

      Bravo, Dan!

From you, I'd expect nothing less. Keep up the good work, you make me laugh!

Well, those shots I just got probably are helping too.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously though, I'm sure you'll get through this just fine and find yourself in better shape soon. Good luck, Terra.

    • Terra,
It sounds exactly like the symptoms that I had right before my OA of hips diagnosis.

I pray and hope it is not. It's hell and only gets worse until you get total hip replacement .

Keep positive though, as it could be a multitude of things

  • Pictures are worth a thousand words so it may be better if you take a photo of both butt cheeks and your hammies and I then can meticulously study your buttocks and give you my prognosis!

    BTW yes I'm back!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Sorry to hear and hope it is something that goes away very un-invasively
through chiropractic or a DO, or maybe a Tens unit. If they do talk surgery, I'd sure look
    at the laser stuff.

    • Oh my goodness!

Yes, you are back, and um, you know that is never going to happen, right?

Clean up in Joe7384's mind, needed!

      Thanks Dan!

I'm holding my own what with the steroids and muscle relaxers. At least now when the spasms hit, they're a dull jolt rather than dropping me to the floor. That's progress, right?

I am being smart though and not doing anything that I know will induce a flare up, like vacuuming. And not vacuuming this weekend is driving me nuts! I did dust everything though, lol!

I really don't want surgery at all. But we can't even plan a next step until the x-ray results are back and see what they show.

I have to go back to work tomorrow and be on my feet for 5 1/2 hours with a smile firmly planted on my face. I think I can pull it off.

    • I've done a little research while waiting for my doc to call, and I'm not sure I like it so much...

Okay, so I'm slipping. At least I've only slipped 20%, haha!

      Hopefully, Doc will call today.

    • Well, she did tell me I was all kinds of messed up, lol!

  • Ah, OK -- then mebbe you are f*cked.
  • Robert's post reminded me of a physical therapist (PT) I know.
She was not your average PT. She was an Olympic athlete,
and an Apple executive was a PT client of hers.

Anyway, her big thing is PT in swimming pools. Salt ones are better than
    chlorine ones.

Just another darn thing to keep in mind.

I wish you well, and please carefully explore the options.

    • Thanks Dan!

As soon as I get a list of options, I'll certainly explore them!

I talked with my daughter a bit ago and her diagnosis reads the same as mine, not the hip one, but the slipped L4 over L5. The one her doctor said was a birth defect and genetic.

The hip one is mine and mine alone.

      Robert,

I walk Lexi, I dance, I ride my bike (not in the winter, though, lol!), I water ski and swim. I lift lady weights, the not too heavy covered in different colors of rubber ones, haha!

So, back to more waiting...two more days...sigh...

  • I'm trying very hard to resist the temptation to make a comment on my eyes and your butt going wonky at the same time.

In the meantime, I hope it all gets fixed up soon for you.

  • I'd look into yoga, physical therapy in a pool, and a Doctor of Osteopathy. I think they can provide methods which are less stress on the body.
  • ^^^^^^^^^
Sounds good. I hope the non-invasive body work is all you need.
    Good Yoga too?

I thought a left, right sway was normal for women.

    • Update:

Not that you really care, but it helps to just get it out rather than fretting.

Anyway, my doctor put me off work for a week, suspended my physical therapy, and is sending me to an orthopedic. Just lovely!

I think it is rather stupid to set up an appointment with a specialist the same day as you scheduled my follow up, just a couple of hours apart, buy hey, I'm just a patient, what do I know, right?

      I'm getting tired of this...

      <sigh>....
