Steven Wagenheim Stole My Name

I kid you not. This dude Steven Wagenheim from MN stole my name.

I went to get my domain stevenwagenheim.com (a while ago) and it was
taken.

I said, "who the hell would have the same name as me?" After all, Wagenheim
isn't a very common name and most of us are in some way related to me.

Anyway, I had to settle for stevewagenheim.com. Not too big a deal but...

My point is this.

Just because you have an uncommon name doesn't mean somebody else
might not also have it and also have a domain name under it.

So if you're thinking of doing personal branding of your name, don't wait
like I did. It took me years before I finally decided to get my own domain
name, which was a stupid mistake.

Don't make the same one I did.

    Don't feel too bad Steve..

Imagine how the Mary Jones, Tom Browns and David Smiths of the world feel?

For years I had NeilMorgan.com then I forgot to renew it.

Someone else bought it then I bought i back for a couple of hundred dollars.

I've got plans to launch my personal blog on it.

My mate is called Andrew Murray and complains now that no-one can find him when they Google his name!

I waited until 2002 to grab my own name dot com. Luckily I got it. There are 82 Robert Planks in the US, 11 Bobby Planks, 49 Bob Planks, etc. Probably a lot more not listed.

And yet there are only 3 Steven Wagenheims listed out there, so what would the odds be for someone like me if I waited. Probably really low.

What finally convinced me to grab it (this was before everyone established TheirName.com as a blog) was, somebody told me:

"If you don't register it, what if someone else does and makes it into a porn site?"

I registered it about 30 seconds later.

I also registered my girlfriend's name as a .com last month... so she'd better be nice to me :-)

I thought my name was gonna be available but when I looked it up it was taken by a Canadian woman singer. I coudn't believe it!!!

I guess branding is out of the picture for me.

    Try having the name Jones

It is taken by a famous magician who happens to be the same age and from nearby.

    LOL at you two!

I had to settle for jeanmorgan.org and keep getting Google alerts about other people who share my name. Then again I think I am very common.

      Steve,

As you've noticed you're not in the minority. Its happened to many of us, myself included.

A few years ago--about nine as it turns out--I was going to register "hurlstone.com"--I didn't at that time.

Went back a few months later to do so and discovered an Aussie B&B had grabbed it.

I just checked again and the only "hurlstone" domain available was the ".biz"--notice I said "was."

Now I own it, not that I'm likely to use it.

      Elmer

PS "stevewagenheim.com" is a much warmer sounding domain name
