Whatsapp without an active cell phone?

I will be going on a 6-12+ months to indefinite world wide trip and would like to be able to keep my Whatsapp active.

I am currently in the USA and have had Whatsapp for a while but all my reading says I need an active cell phone to use it.

I want to get rid of my cell phone pre-paid contract, what will happen with my Whatsapp once I cancel?

I was also thinking of parking my number for $2 a month or maybe figuring out a way to forward to Google Voice or Skype?

    I'm pretty sure there is some way around this by using an alternative verification system when you install it...

      Yes I read that article today, but I think that is for a random Whatsapp number, I would like to keep mine in some way?

    Verifying Whatsapp using Existing Landline Phone Number worked pretty well for me.

      Yeah you can use whatsapp without a phone number or sim card in 2016. In my view it is possible with some awesome tricks. Here as follows.
      1. Download and Install WhatsApp on Android or iPhone.
      2. Make your Phone to Flight Mode.
      3. Enter your Phone number to Verify in WhatsApp. You will not receive the message from whatsapp to verify. You will then need to choose alternative method to verify.
      4. Choose Email to verify. Enter your email id and This is method 1.

    If you won't delete or reinstall WhatsApp from your phone, the number will remain the same, indifferent of what SIM card is has inside or what number it is configured to, as long it's already configured.

    c'mon mate. i'm in asia - and everybody is using that one here, cell phone contracts are peanuts here - you worry too much about nothing. it's all cool here, except where you are right now, fears and worries. get off it now. you have nothing to worry about, at all, once you move out - into freedom territory.
