Cheryl Tiegs Criticizes Sports Illustrated Full Figure Swim Suit Cover

I must admit I have mixed feelings about this. I get what Tiegs is saying here, but also am against body shaming or saying only a thin athletic body is healthy or sexy.

"I don't like that we're talking about full-figured women because it's glamorizing them because your waist should be smaller than 35" inches, Tiegs said at the 13th annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party. "That's what Dr. Oz said, and I'm sticking to it. I don't think it's healthy. Her face is beautiful. Beautiful. But I don't think it's healthy in the long run."

Here's the SI cover photo along with one of Tiegs from a few years back:

Sexy is whatever we think is sexy.

If Sports Illustrated buyers like full figured women on the cover, it will happen more often.
If, suddenly, men started preferring 400 pound women...we would see 400 pound women in advertisements and on magazine covers.

What I see now in ads for feminine product on TV/...a cast of only heavy women. I see ads where all the actors are heavy, men and women.

Maybe it's because most Americans identify with heavy people...because most of us are overweight. Maybe ads directed at women do better with heavy actors..

But most men? I'm assuming a 180 pound woman is less attractive than a 140 pound woman of the same height. Just like I would be more attractive if I lost 40 or 80 pounds.

Healthy is attractive. Athletic is healthier than overweight. Regardless of what is socially acceptable.

Is Ashley Graham beautiful? In my opinion, yes. But she is beautiful despite her weight, not because of it.

This would change when we collectively want to see heavier women as the definition of sexy.

I just spent 5 minutes talking about something I care nothing about. Habit.

Clearly, this is a planned "critique" to call attention to SU every year.

Had to laugh at Tiegs, though. Another queen of plastic surgery in her late 60's (in miniskirts and low cut tops)....and she's quoting Dr. Oz? Too funny.

How many "covers" do they do each year for the swimsuit issue? I found three - one skinny and naked - one (Rousey) that I consider normal size and the plus size, all of them are beautiful.

Not bad for her age at all - but skin at almost 70 doesn't look like 20 yr old skin - and the cleavage misses something in the translation of a few decades. It was her generation of twiggy type models that gave young women the idea they should be stick thin in the first place.

What I don't understand is why a quote from her about the "current issue" hits the news every year and gets repeated.

She is getting some bad comments about her statement. Here's a few from the comments in that article I posted:

"Going under the knife only to end up looking like the lead Walker, from the Walking Dead isn't healthy either"

"That much plastic surgery probably isn't good for you either, Cheryl."

"She looks tired and ready to drop"

On the other side, this guy made an interesting comment:

"She is 100% correct glamourizing obesity may be pc and yes lots of people are fat but it still isnt healthy"

Is putting fat, I mean "full figured", women on a cover like this being PC?

We do have a weight problem in this country as a health issue. About 36% of US adults are obese. Obesity causes serious health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, joint problems...

The woman is not obese though. She is overweight and overweight is not automatically unhealthy

If your BMI is 25 to 29.9, you are in the overweight category. This may or may not be unhealthy, depending on some other things, like your waist size and other health problems you may have.
Weight Management-Are You at a Healthy Weight?

Further Tieg wrongly assumes a waist size larger than 35 when the model comes in a 4-5 inches below that. Heres the really odd thing though. Could she be healthier? probably (but she could be in better cardiovascular health than a non overweight person who spends to much time on the couch and doesn't work out) but

Why don't people like Tieg get upset when clearly underweight people are in ads or walking down runaways. They are very unhealthy and if its all about making sure only the healthiest are glamorized then why don't we stop showing models who are known to do drugs, are bulimic or put their health at risk over plastic surgery?

So glamorizing unhealthy choices seems only to matter to the people in the media when its weight and all the other factors seem not to matter at all..

She's not obese but not too far from it really. Maybe 15 or 20 pounds away. Hey, I was at one time officially obese and a close family member told me that. I didn't think of myself as being obese but when I looked it up they were right. That realization motivated me to lose 40 pounds in less than a year.

Why don't people like Tieg get upset when clearly underweight people are in ads or walking down runaways. Tiegs did say this later "To clarify re bodyweight. Being anorexic/bulimic/overweight all connected to health problems. I want all to be as healthy as they can."

Have no idea because various sites have her from 170 to 200. She is 5' 9' which means she would be normal weight at 168. obese at 203. To be honest...I'll ca ll it...the whole thing is sexist. This is SI with pictures of linesmen morbidly obese ,rich and famous. No concerns whatsoever for health. okay she could stand to lose some weight to be the healthiest she could be but what are we going to do now? say overweight people shouldn't be on TV or movies either (If it keeps the Rosies and and the Barr's off screens I am for it)

This is the SI swimsuit for goodness sake. Are guys all over the word picking that up every February saying "oh I cant wait to see who the healthiest model there is on the cover?" LOL....lets call it like it is. She got the cover because she's pretty AND more importantly on a guy's magazine she had two assets popping. The end. I'd putdown money if you put that shot next to Tieg's shot on the covers of two SI magazines Tieg's cover would get less sales

Health isn't even a one number issue anyway. You can have a perfect BMI and keel over from cholesterol issues.

Tiegs did say this later "To clarify re body weight. Being anorexic/bulimic/overweight all connected to health problems. I want all to be as healthy as they can."
Tiegs added that when she got serious blow back from her comments. I would be more impressed f it were not part of spin to get her early comments to sound more reasonable. She was just plain wrong anyway. That model carries most of the overweight below the hips (waaaaay too much but it doesn't show that much on the cover). her waist is well below the 35 inches that TIeg clearly thought she was above.

I dunno who you fooling anyway my brother. we both know they both call you at the same time Ashley gets the first date..even if its a travel date...you'll buy the two seats for Ashley rather than the one for Tiegs.....lol.

I'm not too sure about that. She definitely has a more beautiful face, which is way more sexy to me than big boobs. However, the huge thighs would be a distraction... the elephant in the room so to speak.

No doubt. Shes got two junks, a stove and a refrigerator in the trunk but I thought you were a marketer - see opportunity. repackage niche and profit. Since her weight goes up and down i suspect she will end up losing a bit once the whole full figured niche wears out.

They used to do just one cover...below is a look through the past 20 years.

20 Years Of SI Swimsuit Covers Prove Exactly Why We Needed A Shake-Up

Three U.S. covers in a single year was a first.

An SI swimsuit cover list link is below that lists all the models, the different covers, and the different inserts.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...e_cover_models

I have an SI subscription and this is the cover they sent me.

All of the covers are nice...if I had a choice I would have preferred the Ronda Rousey cover since she is a world class athlete.

For the record...the issue that came prior to the swimsuit issue was an ultra-slim 64 pages cover-to-cover. The swimsuit issue is at least 5 times thicker than that...

        Cheers

They forgot to give her a swimsuit for the swimsuit edition cover.

You never see overweight guys on the cover of men's magazine's or romance books. They all have six pack abs, muscles, and tanned skin. It's what sells. These are not health-oriented magazines.

      That is so the deal.

An' from a marketin' perspective, we prolly only got ourselves to blame for loadin' the dice in favor of the slimmer figure in the past so sumthin' that should never have been an issue for perfectly beautiful bigger gals kinda became one.

Gotta remember, back in the day when they had artists an' paint, they loved their plump gals.

Flesh kinda oozes from the canvas, an' you can feel the artists' generosity in the positive ways the images are rendered.

When da Vinci painted Leda an' the Swan, gotta figure he wasn't pullin' a shame deal on the gal by pointin' up the carbs she was packin' away down at the pizza takeout.

We are gettin' better at bein' inclusive now, which is so cool cos alla us are here, but there will always be a debate about where to draw the line.

What are we to do with excessive weight (or the lack of it?)

How are we to be inclusive without also advocatin' ill health an' abuse?

The world is kinda wobblin' offa its axis right now thanks to alla the bootylicious twerkin', an' models from the willowy end of the spectrum ought to provide inspiration for those of us able to pirouette in most stores without fear of our extremities trashin' the goods on display, but I gotta tellya those ultra skinny gals scare the sh*t outta me.

There is the same kinda deal goin' on there as bodybuildin'.

I am not beyond appreciatin' a well-honed torso, but I figure livin' studies of beautiful form lose all their allure when the transition from hero to superhero happens.

So for example, I find Chris Hemsworth (the guy with the hammer in alla the Avengers movies) really frickin' sexy.

He is in truly adorable shape.

But does that mean I want morea that?

Oh yeah, gimme Thor with 10% more curvaceous pecs an' a spine you gotta press down real hard on to hit on any bone.

      Would that work any better?

Prolly we can pump the guy up till his blood cells hammer on the insides of his swollen arteries like Alien bustin' outta a stomach an' his calves are curvaceous as watermelons.

Problem is, that is jus' kinda weird an' ugly imho -- a niche view of form sustained by a highly evolved chemical an' behavioral regimen.

No one looks like that by accident.

But we know people gain an' lose weight for all kindsa reasons, an' we gotta keep 'em in the loop even if onea those reasons is bein' irresponsible.

I guess what I am tryin' to say is that it is easier right now to be overweight than underweight.

Great art knowledge, Princess! I'm impressed. Yes, Leda wasn't Twiggy but she wasn't Miss Piggy either. In fact she's got some muscle on her, making me think Leo had invented the Bowflex a few centuries earlier just as he had the helicopter, tank, parachute etc... centuries before they were created.

Here's his Leda and her Swan ( actually a copy of the original ):

By the way, here's another copy of a lost painting of Leda and her seductive swan. Painting by Peter Paul Rubens after a Michelangelo.

I got that cover in my inbox, and my reaction was very similar.

According the media reports, the country has an epidemic of obesity (and we all know the health problems associated with it)....and Sports Illustrated is using their front cover to extoll the virtues of being fat?

I don't want anorexics on the cover either, but lets get real here. Being overweight leads to high blood pressure (which I'm battling right now as I type this), heart disease, diabetes, possibly cancer....what is sexy about any of that?!?!

How about next year, SI finds people who went from fat to fit, and put those women in swimsuits as examples for the rest of us? I'm sure there are a lot of 'em, other magazines seem to find them in droves.

All I can say about Kardashian is when she gets a little older and the loss of elasticity sets in as well as gravitational pull, she's going to have one ugly mess back there, lol!

She'll probably spend a fortune on booty booster undies, or try to find a cosmetic surgeon who'll do a booty lift, hahaha!

She'll have to get a divorce because Kanye won't let her get cosmetic surgery. His mother died from cosmetic surgery, at least that's what a couple of articles say.

You see thats the other part of the hilarity of this. You are right. Its Sports Illustrated but that actually vastly weakens the health point. We now all know that football leads to brain damage. Si puts that right bam! on the cover several times a year.

So wheres this concern for health? Shucks the super bowl is like a national holiday - can;t get more glamorous than that - and we actively glorify the big hits that we KNOW are unhealthy and end the lives prematurely of the people playing.

its all just hypocrisy. If we really cared about health we would go into an uproar every time sport illustrated put that on its cover. We don't because its far more fun telling women they are fat than telling guys the sport they love is unhealthy.. Now if SI decided to forego all the unhealthy things they cover and promote then yeah - legit complaint to have an overweight model on the front cover.

But srsly, gal on the left got squidos ready to roll outta her swim suit.

As a bonus, there is splashy water an' she is on her knees.

I love how a couple of men are saying they don't like the Ashley Graham cover because she looks "unhealthy." Actually, she looks fat by today's standards. She doesn't look unhealthy. If you don't like fat chicks, just say you don't like fat chicks instead of implying that you just don't like unhealthy chicks. lol.

Here's a supermodel that looks unhealthy. Actually, she's now dead. Luisel Ramos died just moments after stepping off the catwalk at fashion week. She had a heart attack which was brought on by her illness.

This one died on the catwalk too.

Ana Carolina Weston was told by an agency that was too fat at just 112 lbs! 2 years later and 28 lbs lighter she died.

I just do not think she looks unhealthy or fat.

Of course, Iam a guy who likes some meat on them bones. Not overtly fat. But curves.

Nothing turns me off more than a girl who is ripped and hard with a really big time six pack abs.
Thats what I have ( minus the six pack abs lol). So why would I want that ??

I grew up where woman were not supposed to look that way.

Curvy, some softness and something to hold onto, everyday of the week I will take that

As far as I can see she just doesn't look fat. May be should could be sucking her stomach in. I don't know.

But the picture itself ( which is all I have to go on) she looks really fine

It's weird when I was single there were woman who I went out with that were 5' 10 and 150 who were just fat.

Then I went out with several women who were 5'9 180 lb who were really fine.

Some women ( and men too) can hold there weight really well. It's not fat but the bone structure and the way the flesh is situated on those bones and different areas of the body that makes all the difference in the
      World lol

I don't know about really big time six pack abs (I hate the look of female and male bodybuilders), but I prefer the look of a well toned, well muscled, fit woman over the body style depicted in the SI cover. To me that's fat and I wouldn't want to look like that. I also wouldn't want to be bone thin either, but I like the look of active and fit women the best, with no big rolls of fat on their bodies.

That is not fat shaming to me. To each their own. If she feels good and is happy with her body, more power to her. She's obviously made it work for her, ending up on the cover of SI.

It's very tragic that those young women died from their eating disorders, but those photographs seemed like BS to me, so I googled and they're fake:

I was going to Google those models also. Those photos just didn't seem right. Like you say, it's sad what happened to them and being anorexic can be deadly, but those photos were too much.

Odd that someone felt that was necessary to alter the photos because Anorexia looks horrendous enough without faking it.

One of those models died at 88 lbs. and if you've ever seen a grown woman at 88 lbs. at 5'7" it's not pretty.

his feeling was reinforced by the recent deaths of 22-year-old Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos, who succumbed to heart failure during a fashion show in August 2006, and 21-year-old Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, who passed away in November 2006 from multiple organ failure. Both deaths were attributed to the effects of anorexia. (When Ana Reston entered a hospital in October 2006, she stood 5'7" but weighed a mere 88 lbs.)
Here's another pic of Ana Carolina Reston that I assume is not photoshopped. Looks pretty drastic to me.

        Hila Elmalich Another dead model

Isabelle Caro (13 September 1982 – 17 November 2010) was a French model and actress from Marseille, France, who became well known after appearing in a controversial advertising campaign "No Anorexia" which showed Caro with vertebrae and facial bones showing under her skin in a picture by photographer Oliviero Toscani.

I personally think that the girl on the cover is beautiful. You don't have to be a stick to be healthy.

Some women just naturally have curves. When you are glamourizing the hourglass figure, you are creating problems for the girls who don't have it, and may never get it.
