New member to my family. Jack but responds to Jackie because owners thought he was a girl at first. Somewhat overweight and hates the dogs but isn't exposed to them much.

Male owner newly single and teenage son, put him on Craigslist saying they no longer had time for him. Lived with them for 10 years, probably as long as the marriage survived.

He's fat and lazy and has taken a lot of effort to get him to eat since he's been here. He's starting to come around and enjoy the new attention he's getting, but slow in adjusting. He's having a hard time adjusting to the fact that there are dogs here.

That's funny. I was born in the late sixties, and as we all know haircuts were few and far between in the hippy years. People called me Jackie until I was 6 or 7.

Tell your Jack that this Jack said he is a lucky cat.

I strongly suspect that Jack is going to be fine in his new home.

And I wish my cat would have a little more "Lazy" in him.

I'm having a hard time convincing him that everything in the house is not his personal toy.

And when I yell at him, he thinks if he just lays on the floor, rolling around looking cute, that I won't stay mad at him.....

      Well........he sure has my number.

Pretty cat...and very lucky you took him in!

I do not understand how people decide "no time for" an animal that has been part of their family for years. I truly do not get it - and want nothing to do with people like that.

We talk about dogs being traumatized - but many people don't realize the same happens to cats. To be taken from the only home and people you've known is a traumatic change. Luckily Jackie (Chan???) landed in your house so he'll adapt...and be much better off than he was.

If the dogs don't bother the cat he will eventually decide they aren't a threat. May not be friends but I've known several cats who learned to co-exist without hissing, etc after a few weeks (or sometimes months).

I don't get it either. Adult cats sleep most of the day anyway. If you can spend an hour or so playing with them, they can spend the rest of the time sleeping, eating, staring outside the window, playing with various toys, and planning your murder.

And cats are inherently adorable. My cat now has figured out when we get up. At 8AM we open the bedroom door, and he's sitting there, with that stupid toy mouse in his mouth...waiting for me to play with him.

Somehow he thinks that he should play before he gets fed. Probably, he thinks I'm rewarding his playtime with food.

For some reason, he has found that running to the stairs, and flying down the flight of steps, only to land at the bottom...is fun. I mean, it is one single jump...and he lands on the carpet at the bottom of the steps. He must think it's some sort of ride.

But no matter how his day goes, no matter how much I yell at him to get off the tables...at the end of the day, he jumps in my lap, and quickly falls asleep.

It's been less than a month, and we are fast friends.

          Unless he's a double agent.

He looks at the dogs with something similar to hatred when they walk past a couple of times a day, and that's the only exposure he has to them. lol.

Funny ... all he does is sleep right now, and I've been trying to coax him to play just a little bit. I tell him Claude's cat plays and got a lot of new toys. I'll buy you toys if you show even a hint of interest.

Yep ... Kay, Claude. The guy tried to convince me that he has gotten sooooo very busy that he has no time for the cat and feels sorry that he can't give him more time. I didn't buy that line. All this cat does is sleep and perch on the window sill. He requires no time at all and a little affection now and then, as in a pet, is appreciated, but not required. I'm sure he was happy with his life, but this owner couldn't wait to dump the cat once his marriage was done. It was probably primarily the wife's cat, but she was not able to take him with her.

Beautiful cat, Suzanne! Jack is very lucky to have found a new home with you.

I'm with Kay - don't really care for people who can just give away a pet (unless it's absolutely necessary), especially after many years. I've always considered pets family.

It is possible, though, that if the cat was primarily his wife's, keeping him was a painful reminder of her. But maybe he just wasn't bonded with the cat and didn't want to be bothered with him. If he doesn't have time for a cat, I sure hope he doesn't ever get a dog.

That's a cool looking cat. Jack will adopt to the Dogs, eventually would not be surprised to see the dogs being chased by Jack. Great you save the cat the prior owner may eventually just dropped off at the pound or thru it outside.

Jackie is ok - just think of Jackie Gleason or Jackie Chan.

                  Cat probably knows this.
