Windows 10 Completely Upgraded Itself

Left my Laptop on overnight a week or so back and when I went to log back in a fresh install had Occurred. It said, All my files were still there where I left them, welcome to Windows, we have upgraded it and made exciting improvements etc. Quick-start was turned back on.

Essentially it had scheduled itself to do a fresh install at about 3 am and completed it.

I do not leave my main PC on overnight but went to the updates bit and it said a newer version was available to install and if I left the machine on it would do it at 3.am. I chose to do it right away, just left it alone for 45 minutes.

Well, I suppose that's cool. anyone else had this?

Added: just to clarify, I already had updated my machines to Ten last year, this was just a revised version,. No problems so far, a very stable operating system.

  • When I tried to update, it would hang each time for a few hours.
After the third attempt I just went and bought the win 10 pro
and installed it off the cd.

Personally - so far, I don't trust it. I keep hearing all the fans kick in
and the cpu pegging. When I track down the offending service and turn it
off another service starts hogging the cpu.

If I don't figure it out soon, It will burn out my laptop, or I will just reinstall 8

    • If you click on that little grid icon in the bottom right hand corner it actually gives you warnings about the status and programs you recently installed that are starting up with Windows and hogging the system resources. been pretty much good for me so far.

Windows 10 wouldn't work out for me. I don't have the bandwidth for large programs that update whenever someone else wants them to.

  • Auto-updates have been occurring since at least Win98. Nothing remarkable about it at all.

    • True, but not auto complete re-install of Windows.
  • I went on vacation for a week and when I came back Windows 10 had knocked up my girlfriend.

    • Don't worry, onSubie. If it's like anything else Windows-related, I'm sure it aborted before completion.

  • I just upgraded or whatever you call it from 7 only because I bought a new pc and obviously 10 came pre-installed. I don't do anything different from what I did on the last one so maybe haven't explored 10 yet, but I could just as happily have carried on with 7. Maybe I'd notice a difference if I'd installed it on my old one? Anyways 7 or 10, as long as it works then it'll do me.
