Am I Being Too Sensitive?

While meandering through upstairs I found a member with the username 'Yahweh' which I found to be quite an offensive use for the name so I complained about it.

I wondered how FL/WF would react if I registered the username Allah.

Am I being too sensitive? Should I just have let it ride?

It is my understanding that the god known as YAHWEY was once the god of storms, later the god of war, then later the god of the Hebrew bible. Now, that's either true or it isn't, I don't have sources so I can't put it in the article.
      To some, they are interchangeable.

In my opinion, no. I find it offensive as well.

But..'.false "ones" shall arise' seems to come to mind...

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Some people really do have the name Jesus.

So yes, I think you might be a bit too sensitive.

Wrong to do? no. In poor taste? TBD.

But Jesus is a very common name in Mexico. (Pronounced Hey-Soos)

              Yaweh, not so much.

Does the name being common remove it from consideration? Why does "Jesus" get a pass?

What if we agree to pronounce Yahweh "Yea Wuh"?

We all don't agree, I would have to correct everybody else.

We can't just go around making stuff up.

Jesus gets a pass because Hey-soos was around before we were, it's not something we just made up.

Precisely my point. Pronunciation shouldn't make a difference. Thus, why does HeySeuss get a pass?

We didn't make Heysoos up, that's why.

You still aren't making any sense. What existed before we were born? Jesus? The pronunciation "Heysoos"? Yahweh? Why does something existing before we were born matter in terms of what is taboo or not?

I think you know what you're trying to say, but you simply aren't communicating it. Did you take an extra dose of your meds this morning?

Yeah. I get a kick out of someone that shows they are a step (or ten) ahead of me.

It's why I laugh at good jokes. Maybe why we all laugh at jokes. The end is unexpected.

Riffle and I are different in many ways. But our humor is nearly identical (based on my experience) and we are close in intelligence.
One of the things I love most about my wife is that she slyly handles me, to get me to do what she wants. Part of me knows what she is doing, but it shows intelligence, and we both think it's funny...because I do the same thing to her.

Yes, you are being too sensitive. There are far more productive things you could be doing with your time than worrying about some random person's online screen name. I mean, how does this person's screen name have ANY impact at all on your life or your business?

Paul, you don't strike me as an oversensitive person. If this matters to you, my advice would be to report the name and let the admin make the call.

I love this. I'm in the OT Forum, which I suppose is as close as you can get to officially wasting time and I'm being hectored for not doing more productive things.

I don't really want to get into long winded reasons about why this tugged my chain. I'm not a religious person but I just thought that if there was going to be sauce for the goose, then the gander should be entitled to the same treatment. If I start getting all long winded then this will make it necessary to start banging on about religion and politics and I don't really feel like an enforced holiday at the moment although I guess a few in the SEO forum would be glad of that.

Anyway, thanks everybody for your posts. Hopefully the thread won't descend into yet more abuse about Claude.

You aren't being hectored. You asked a question and I answered it - along with an explanation for my answer. Were you simply looking for answers that only agreed with your position? Or are you just being to sensitive over my answer and explanation?

You are in the OT section - rhetorical questions are the norm down here.

Paul - seeing the name would make me pause but then I'd let it go. It's not a new WF acct - I find it lacking in taste but doesn't personally offend me, either.

  • Like a lotta words, Yahweh is evocative, perhaps moreso than non-name nouns of a C or N persuasion, or actual name words in common usage like Jesus.

If someone is usin' it as a forum name, you gotta ask — why choose that?

What are you tryin' to infer?

Someone shows up as Hitler, you would wanna know why.

Is this praise or provocation, insight or incite?

It would not bother me personally that anyone chose to call themselves Yahweh or Allah, but I would be wary of their motives an' watchful of what happened in their wake.

I find it funny that anyone finds any word offensive. But I can see (because I remember being religious) how it might offend some people.

Sorry Claude, but Paul found the use of the word offensive. I don't find words offensive, but yeah, the use of them can be offensive.

I get what you're implying by "Thor". I don't really get offended by a person's want, or need, to stick some label on themselves to make themselves feel better. I usually just roll my eyes...

Labeling, or feeling like you need a label, is a sign of insecurity to me.

I don't find any words offensive, or even the use of them. It may be impossible to offend me. The closest thing is that I can get mad (once every several years so far), when someone is mean, to me or someone else.

It may have come from decades of selling, and not reacting emotionally to anything anyone says to me.

I don't think a person is wrong if they are offended, it just isn't the way I react.

Only people I love / really care about, can offend me.

When stupid falls out of someones mouth, I see it as a window to
there prejudices, lack of education and more often then not,
where exactly they are maturity wise.

I laugh at a lot of stupid - on the inside.

I had to look up the word "Offend" to make sure what we are talking about.

This will reveal me for the pr!ck I am.

The reason I almost never get mad, no matter what someone says is; To me, they are damaged...suffering. I don't see them as "like me." Even most of my closest friends couldn't anger me, no matter what they say.

But I can get frustrated with bad logic. When I know it's impossible to reason with someone, it can make me want to walk away. On this forum, the only thing that frustrates me is arguing points that weren't made...purposely misunderstanding what was said.

None of this is because I'm smarter than anyone else, or a better person...it's just that I don't think of myself as part of what's happening around me. And, like I said before, I'm not an emphatic person.

I don't remember ever yelling at my son. But maybe I did. I never raised my voice in anger with my wife. And those are the people I love.

I do yell at my cat, but it isn't really anger.

Would you find the username Thor offensive? Neither do I.

everyone has the right to be offended, and in this day and age people are offended by almost everything. The thing we do not have a right to do is change everything that offends us.

I'm thinking of changing my user name to Osama bin Hitler. No-one would have any problems with that would they?

If they do then surely my second choice (Kim Jong Mussolini) is acceptable to all.

I like my name, so I'm not changing it at all.

If that offends you, then we're even, haha!

Seriously, I tried to think of a name to change mine to, but I couldn't find one I liked more than my own. It's so down to earthsy.

Yahweh, l was trying to break it down into something rude and...Yah, we, H..... was the worst thing l could think of.

Didn't realize that the word meant something?

I don't think that it is as offensive as Al..., that word is getting dragged through so much mud, (thanks to fanaticism) it will end up going the way of the Chinese good luck symbol?

Not in and off itself offensive, but plenty will still see it that way.

You're right Claude, it's not wrong when someone gets offended. What offends some doesn't offend all. I think I am more of the lines of "poor choice of words". I do not like the use of the word "retard" when it comes to someone who isn't clinically retarded. I think it's in poor taste.

I really don't get easily offended, however, there is ONE word that will set me off, if you call me "it".

I find it interesting that you don't get offended (exception noted). May I give it a shot?

Riffle and I are different in many ways. But our humor is nearly identical (based on my experience) and we are close in intelligence.
One of the things I love most about my wife is that she slyly handles me, to get me to do what she wants. Part of me knows what she is doing, but it shows intelligence, and we both think it's funny...because I do the same thing to her.
Same around here... I love how he outsmarts me. I only married him because he's fun to look at! I had no idea he was smart, too!

People have been named after Messiahs here and there all over the world. There's Jesus's and Muhammad's all over the place...........but I don't see any God, Allah, Buddha's etc anywhere.

I've never seen anyone actually named after a God. Seems that is considered blasphemy.

Now - if someone wants to use it as a username in a forum.........well, I think the Princess is right on that one. Maybe that dude(ette) should be taken with a grain of salt. Why would they do so?

Terra...........I don't think it matters that a name was used before we were around - I think what matters is if the name was used generally before, or at least at the time, the religion was founded. Which takes me back to my first statement here. I've never seen anyone actually in real life named after a god in any religion - but after the messiahs of a religion not uncommonly.
