What microphone can I get to record myself that won't cost me an arm and leg?

  • Get "Blue Snowball" for around $50. The sound quality is 9/10.

    Or, the "Samson Go Mic" for about $30. The sound quality is 8/10.

    I own both, and have created successful courses using either one.

    It has a very good quality, proven and tested.

    It is one of the best provider of microphones.

    Go to a used video game store and look for a Guitar hero mic or something like that.

    I saw a video on youtube where a guy tested about 25 mics (from $XX to $X,XXX) or so. One of the mics was a $5 used guitar Hero mic. It sounded very good for recording audio for sales videos, courses, etc. No white noise and a nice warm, clean tone (but not too warm). Sounded better than many (maybe even most) of the mics he tested.

    Sure, you'll have to be just a few inches from it as it will not pick up too well from 2 feet or more away, but this should not be a problem for most people.

    Don't pay more than $7 or so for it, though.

    Even small towns have at least one used video game store these days. Or check ebay, if course.

    But don't buy no-name mics from cheap Chinese retailers like FastTech, Banggood, etc. They're junk usually. Been there, done that.
  • I use a Blue Snowball too and I recommend it for the lower-end pricing point with higher-end sound. It's not going to give you everything you might want but general use and podcasting works well.

  • I use a Logitech headset with a swing-down mic. It was about $30 and the sound quality is decent for the video tutorials and sales videos I make. I could see getting a more expensive mic if you're making music tracks, but it's fine for recording talk.

      I will actually vouch the logitech headset mics, I mean they're nothing compared to professional mics but the cost/quality point is great. It must be a USB headset.

      If your computer does not have an external sound interface (not really affordable) then the computer itself will interfere with the audio quality. (The explanation here is highly technical, but basically other components of the computer can be audibly heard through the analog microphone.) But this issue is irrelevant with USB microphones.

      I figured I would mention that since were talking about cheap microphones for a computer I assume but man that's kind of dangerous on these forums.

      Cheap USB microphones will always sound much better then an analog microphone plugging into a computer's microphone port, a sound card will help but only so much. External devices either need to be shielded or at least 36 inches away from the computer (preferably both.)

      I can actually hear the electrical interference my hard drive spinning up creates if I talk on an analog mic and record it. It sounds really crazy.
