For the last 12 or so years I've been using the Turbo Tax to file my taxes...and it seems like each and every year they raise their prices. I logged into Turbo Tax this year and they raised their fee to $119 (?).

Finally, I got tired of it and decided to look around. I found https://www.freetaxusa.com . I found it easier than Turbo Tax to use and it's FREE...although filing state taxes was $12.95.

I can't believe I didn't shop around sooner. Sometimes we just get stuck in our old ways...

You actually get tax money back?

I have this vision of the typical dream-peddling warrior OWING tax money, lol.

Not implying anything to you directly.

Yep - I've always opted for TurboTax out of habit, plus the purchase price isn't really an issue because you can claim it back as a genuine deduction within the return.

Having said that, I see FreeTaxUSA comes well recommended (besides you Kurt ). It's too late for this year, but I've bookmarked it for future years.

    Thanks Kurt

Of course not - if he did, he would have filed much earlier.

I just used Turbo Tax and they charged $19. Not sure why they wanted to charge you over a hundred dollars.

Did you need to file Schedule C for self employed/business?

Try tacking on a couple rental properties, a handful of dividend and stock sales, and throw in a fistful of K1's just for fun.

        Ugh.

I know someone who works at H&R block, and for them to do my taxes free as a FAVOR would have still run over $1000 as H&R block's software bills back "per form". Un-believable.

You have me thinking for next year. I have used TT since they started and it is incredible. Whenever I have thought about trying something cheaper I am always afraid that it won't be as simple and seamless as TT.

IMO, Freetaxusa is easier. With TurboTax you have to click through every possibility, like "Did you have income from a foreign emu egg ranch?"

With FreeTaxUsa, they list all the options for each section on a single page so you only have to visit what's relative to your situation, instead of having to click through every one.

To be honest, if both were the same price, I'd choose Freetaxusa. They even import last year's TurboTax PDF to get you started.

That's what I needed to here.
Might be worth a try next year just for a test run.

        Thanks, Kurt!

Well it's comforting to know that if I become self-employed - that on top of not getting any money back I will likely have to pay a ton to get them done - along with owing a lot back.

Still sounds like it beats having to get up at 6 AM to punch in everyday.
