It's funny you posted this subject.

The other day I was on a site (marinetraffic.com) that shows the live positions of ships.

It's kind of an odd niche but still an interesting site.

If I was captain of a ship coming through the Gulf of Aden I would find that site deeply disturbing.

Here pirate pirate pirate. Here I am!

Back in 1986-87 I was a radio frequency technician (Link 11 & Crypto) aboard a guided missile cruiser sailing the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf (and other) waters. When we reached those notorious waters our CO and a few others met with the Sultan of Oman as we cruised the mouth of the Gulf of Oman. After a few days cruising that area we sailed down through the coastal waters off Somalia on our way to Mombasa, Kenya. Yeah, we were on high alert for both pirates and for radicals wanting to go jihad on our ship for a few weeks.

We also sailed to Karachi, Pakistan and there again we were on extra high alert. By the time we arrived in Karachi none of the crew was allowed to disembark the ship. Too many Christians were being killed in the streets, so for our own safety, our multi-day port in Pakistan was cancelled. Instead, we sat a mile or two off the Karachi coast and had a half-dozen or more extra watches peering the sea around the ship for small boats and rubber or wood rafts floating our way that could be packed with explosives. We could not pull up to a pier in the port as we would have been too easy of a target for the bomb happy crazies. Fun fun fun...NOT.

Gotta keep those shipping lanes open....

    Cheers
