Can anyone recommend a good Puppy training Guide/Book/Website? Lost my dog to cancer and am looking for a puppy but it has been an extremely long time since I trained a puppy.

Sorry to hear of your loss, but it's going to take a lot of work to train a puppy on how to post questions to WF. You might want to consider outsourcing that, rather than attempting to train a new dog.

I'd recommend spending some time on Cesar Milan's training site. He has some excellent free videos and the man understands dogs.

Also, we have a dog trainer on the WF - alexbrightdog - and his site has some good info on it.

Sorry for the loss of your furry friend - dogs just don't live long enough to suit us.

I've trained my own dogs - and several others - for many years. Best piece of advice: find 2-3 online trainers like Cesar and Alex that give advice on positive reinforcement training...and then follow them.

Your puppy has one goal - to be with you and please you. Where else can you get that sort of attention?

Kay is 100% correct - positive reinforcement is the only way to go. I have a little book on Amazon which lays out the step by step strategy I've used with new puppies, several older rescue dogs and also (over the years) with dogs friends, neighbors and a few people I've been recommended to have asked me to train or retrain.

It's a reasonably short read (people have criticized it for this), but it lays out, step by step a timetable to follow. No fluff It is actually one of just a couple of books I've published under my own name, as opposed to a pen name.

PM me with the email you use for Amazon and I'll gift you a copy.
