Isn't a role model supposed to be one that overcame or excelled?

I believe he did. Good for him. I don't even now what to say of the people who published his emails.

To be fair, Steve, a school board president rarely has actual contact with the children, so I wouldn't call him a role model. If the people of Detroit feel he can do the job, then let him.

I'm not sure who's in charge of things like curricula and graduation requirements, but that would be my biggest concern. Kids don't know how to read or write, and it's clear that parents really don't care, or they'd be addressing the problem.
