Meow - bumping old threads is a lame way to market your stuff, in 2016

Obvious cry for help is obvious.

If you're spending your time crawling through forums and old bumping posts that might relate to your niche for sig exposure, it not only damages your brand but also risks Google penalties* on your website.

A better way to invest time in promoting your site, for SEO purposes or whatever, is to network with sites and offer them a unique perspective on whatever is troubling people in your marketplace, right now.

Don't underestimate the power of your voice.. when, let's face it.. many in your niche remain silent out of fear of 'what others will think of them'.

So instead of spamming your way to 'success'.. as we're seeing on WF. , contribute something of value to your niche... You'll be more respected for it.

Disclaimer: Been drinking. Who cares.

*I don't know if that's true, but it should be.

This is very true. The only way to become a thought leader in your area of focus is to be "out there" and providing value.

Bumping years old posts is not really providing value... At least it isn't providing current value.

It's better to start the conversation around something new.

    True,,,

that being said, guest posting is a tricky matter now after years of abuse by unscrupulous IMers...

Here is Matt Cutts (the FACE of Google) talking about guest posting abuse:

Decay and fall of guest blogging

    ...But,

there is a way around it. Become a source of content for information hungry reporters and bloggers in your niche.. Yes, you might be able to write guest posts for them...

however the better opportunity here, is to get quoted and to have a link pointing back to your site.

Here are some sites where you can get in touch with these reputable reporters and bloggers:

    -MyBlogU

    -SourceBottle

    -HelpaReporterOut

    Start promoting your content!

Yep. Better to report them so that they get removed and not add yet another thread to wade through.

Thank you! I hate seeing posts from years ago getting bumped up because someone is trying to get more attention. I really wish WF would lock old posts after 6 months of no activity to prevent this from happening.

What about creating new threads ranting about bumping old threads so you're the OP with a forum sig?

Creating a new thread to call out a spammer is also redundant.
There must be a better way to invest your time like you mentioned.

I agree with every drunken word from the OP. But it should also be noted that newbies will innocently bump threads. We do, after all, encourage them not to create new threads about Seen It A Million Times Before subjects. Some of these newbies duly do what we ask, and in so doing, they search out threads - and reply to them.

This is a very valid point. I see a lot of newbies get tarred and feathered for asking a common question instead of just doing a simple search.

But I feel like it's pretty easy to spot the spammers vs. newbies who are simply searching for past threads. For example, with all the cat threads that were suddenly revived the other day, the person made a pretty generic comment with their link in their signature line.

I think a good solution would be to lock threads that haven't had any activity for over six months (for example). They'd still be searchable to help out newbies, but spammers wouldn't be able to revive them to spam this site.

      Just my two cents.

That's true, and I'd add that the first new post on an old thread is not always the person who originally bumped the thread. Sometimes the original post that bumped the thread gets reported and deleted while someone else is in the process of commenting after the thread was brought back, and then it looks like they're the one who bumped the thread.

Having said that, if Michael is posting this thread in response to the same old OT thread I saw bumped, there's little chance it was an innocent mistake. There's also little chance the offender will be back to read this thread, having already carried out his spam mission.

Or be one of a few who will answer anything without looking at the date....or reading the last few posts in the thread. If you got caught up in an old thread from years ago - you can delete your post (as in, "my bad") or you can argue that any comment is good

Or you can claim that anyone tired of seeing "new post" and finding a thread from 2010 re-bumped....is a "complainer".

    will innocently bump threads.
Right - but that's not what we're talking about. Half a dozen or so people pulling up threads from 2009 - 2015 - all of the threads in THEIR niche and related to THEIR signature....and bumping them with a couple lines of nonsense. Some MMO gooroo is probably telling people to do this in a free report.

Mods shouldn't have to lock threads. The dates aren't invisible - and the new members bumping these threads with promo links are clearly visible, too.

Problem is not as much the spammers (the mods delete those posts) as the other members jumping in to post without reading the thread or the spam post or the date.

On the other hand - if mods thought it were a problem, they'd fix it....and they haven't so apparently any post is a good post? I guess I'll just avoid reading any threads with high view count as that most likely indicates "old and bumped".

    I understand you, OP

Simply bumping with one or two lines is not going to cut it.

It's obvious and doesn't add any value

Maybe if the person put some effort into it and actually ANSWERED the old question, it MAY have some value if there were no REAL answers in the thread.

Considering the fact that ALL FORUMS (except for some weird reason, BH forums) are taking a beating in the SERPS, you're right on the money: niche-related bumps don't add much SEO value. Besides, the sigs here are NOFOLLOW and bumpers are probably trying to get a CITATION boost.

There are easier ways to get a CITATION boost.

      .
One can only assume you are trying to justify yourself,
for what must have been a record breaking period of
bumping at least half a page of old threads on a daily basis.

Seeing old threads with zero value is annoying and I don't think it works for signature promotion that well anyway. It's a pointless practice of people that lack other ideas. Worst of all, those comments usually add no new info and tend to be pure garbage. Way to damage your brand instead of promoting it...

Yes, and a newbie, answering a 2 year old post, like it was yesterday, looks like a total f***wit, to put it mildly.

I have also seen posters resurrect something that was started by someone who has been banned for life, or is deceased.

I mean the numbers are so small why bother looking like an idiot to grab some bread crumb clicks.

Start a new post, and actually do something frickin worthwhile, like putting up a video or useful content.

Or at least something funny, we could use a laugh down here.

Yes, illusion is right, get rid of this incessant dredging up old posts, since it doesn't work, and is just p**** off who is left, and a few newbies, eventually, and endorse, quality posts.

    And quality traffic.
