type/chatting sites?

Hi all,

I regularly type/chat to a friend and we have been using Yahoo Messenger. They just did a major upgrade and it's now a useless piece of manure.

Can any of you tell me some good alternatives?
I already know Skype, ICQ and Windows Live but want something more flexible and user-friendly. Thanks in advance.

    I wasn't saying something better than Skype. I want something different to Skype.
    Anyway I think I have found a few solutions so I will check them out as soon as I have the time.

    I am now using Paltalk. I have no idea what else it may be compatible with. I primarily use it to chat with one friend.
