9-to-3; 9-to-5; 9-to-9; What is next?

Just read an MSN article about a Chinese entrepreneur who is dead serious about 9-to-9 working day for his company and workers. I still remember there is some kind of an experiment in France and some Scandinavian countries with a 9-to-3 working hours. Finally, I grew up with the 9-to-5 routine, which used to be some kind of a golden standard. What is happening?

When you are making your first entrepreneur or freelance steps, everyone is smiling and keep saying, good for you, you are your own boss now. Guess what? Someone forgot to tell me that instead of one boss, I have like dozens of bosses now. My clients. I also heard a lot about the unlimited freedom. No more 9-to-5. You can work when you want. You can rest when you want. Guess what? You work around the clock. You work until the job is done.

It is like we live on the different planets. What is happening with the folks in China? They take their beds with them in offices and factories? Back in my corporate days, I was a part of the giant multinational business organism. People travel. People meet. People talk. It turned out that my German colleagues can expect between 30 and 40 days of paid holiday each year. Just to avoid any confusion we are talking about regular working days weekends not included. Now you know why there are so many German tourists traveling around the world. I was at the edge of my tears. That is like two months or what. I on the other side could get money if I don't exercise my holiday rights. So, I waited for Christmas to get some rest because the sales department and delivery guys didn't work two weeks during that period.

Then I hear guys complaining about the good old 9-to-5. Do you remember that bald guy in Matrix who betrayed Neo? I can't remember his name, but he was sitting with the agent Smith in some restaurant. The freedom was unbearable for him. So, he wanted back. I remember his saying, I want to be something important when I get back. The catch is that he wants his memory to be completely erased. Sometimes I wish to go back in the 9-to-5 Matrix. The magic of oblivion. Is that the right word to use?

Who knows what is next in our wonderful gig economy. Imagine that you go back in time. A hundred years ago or something. You meet with a worker who fights against 12-hour or even 14-hour shifts and wants to improve worker's rights. What are you going to say to him? Save your breath buddy it is not going to work either way. The final thought and the most dreadful idea I got. Remember that ingenious Chinese guy from the beginning of my story? Did he mean from 9 am to 9 pm of the same day, or from 9 am till 9 am of the following day? You know people can get easily confused. I don't even dare to think what's going in Japan. One thing is for certain. You just can't be surprised anymore when it comes to bad news, can you?

I read the headline and thought it was a pattern and a question in logic. The answer is 9 to 17.

Ha ha ha, this is great! My kudos to quite a unique perspective, lol.

Now you got me thinking, how do you come up with this number, lol.

      Thx. Cheers.

It could also be 9 to 15.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

        First, I hate you.

Second, here's where I came up with 9 to 17.

The sequence of numbers; 9-to-3; 9-to-5; 9-to-9....increases by 2..then 4...the next logical increase would be by 8. And the sequence is adding that number to the previous number.

I see it. Yeah, you could also just increase every previous number by 2. And you would get 15.

Are you trying to figure out how many hours you can work your employees at the Sweeper Sweatshop?

BTW, converting from military time, your 9 to 17 becomes 9 to 5.

Yes, 9 to 9, around the 1930's we worked 9 to 10, Henry ford saw that it was slowly killing off the workforce, and made it 9 -5.

He had several housewifes approach him, saying that their husbands were withering away from the long hours.

So, yeah, this guy is an a***h**** to put it mildly!

The history repeats itself in the worst possible way. Do we really have to go back to figure out what's wrong? I'm lazy to Wiki or Google about it, but I'm pretty much sure it all started in the US, during the prohibition years you mentioned. Dunno about the OZ, but the First of May is an International Labor Day. In Europe means a lot. Not sure about the States where it all started. Yet, what can you do? There's no freelance union or the syndicate that will protect the labor rights of internet marketers. You work around the clock and you call a good night 8-hour sleep a luxury.

      Cheers!

  • I thought it was the final stages of a heart transplant, as detailed in Dr Slim Cutter's 2011 bestseller "Home Surgery By Numbers".

(Btw, the answer — like alla the best conundrum solutions — appeared in the appendix, though this was cut from later editions.)

Should have known better when it comes to the thread title itself, lol. But, warriors' ideas about what's this thread is about without reading the text are priceless, lol. I'm so glad you didn't fall for the math stuff too.

      Cheers!

Hmmm, yes, in a way, but the hours are up to us, and there is such a thing as leverage.

There is also such a thing as having a retirement with the capacity or knowledge of being able to create an income.

In answer to the substance of the OP, I suggest that the MSN article is either a gross exaggeration or just the wishful thinking of a Chinese businessman who doesn't know about his own government's moves to tighten labor laws.

This has been going on for some years now, and while shocking conditions still prevail in some rural locations, workers in big industrial centers are now getting a much better deal.

I am an old hand when it comes to business in China, having visited there countless times since 1978 both as an exporter and an importer. I have long-established contacts and I have seen working conditions improve substantially over the years.

Many factories provide health insurance, and in some cases meals also, as well as creches for employees' children. I have been in numerous factories where the processes produce a lot of dust and scrap, but the floors are spotless, the whole place is clean and bright, and lines are painted on the floor so that moving machinery such as forklifts don't go close to the workers.

One of my old contacts, who operates three factories with around 6,000 workers, has complained to me about the high cost of complying with the ever tightening rules.

But the myth of horrible sweatshop conditions being almost universal in China still prevails.

I am not an advocate for China. Although I teach sourcing and importing from China my advice is always to look locally for your requirements first, and I also encourage people to look to other countries.
