Finally, Google and Facebook are cracking down on ads appearing on fake news.!!

I read online this week that Google and Facebook have both decided to crack down on people who are using highly rated fake news to advertise their schemes. I think its a step in a right direction because some people out there put up something controversial on their site and when you open it up you find nothing but a total contradictory material.

Google said that it is devising a procedure to prevent websites that misrepresent content from using its AdSense advertising network. The main trigger behind it I guess was that some people made a fake prediction about a political outcome and used that as a source of advertisement.

The whole step being taken is very commendable but I have a question about the implementation of this plan. How will they differentiate between someone who is portraying a fake message and using it as an opportunity for advertisement? Especially Facebook is a very interconnected community with billions of users worldwide. How will they find out that a fake news is projected to have a detrimental effect on the community in terms of changing their views?

What you guys think will be the approach taken up by these huge social media sites? Looking forward for your opinion.

Cheers

Not sure how Facebook is going to crack down on fake stuff being distributed from all points of the political compass, but Google has always tried to crack down on sites disseminating crap no matter what topic it's on.

Arguing with an idiot is like playing chess with a pigeon.
It'll just knock over all the pieces, poop on the board, and strut about like it's won anyway.

Definitely a losing battle - but good to have that battle being made public so maybe at least a few people will realize they can't always believe FB and/or the internet....

I know - good luck with that!

The problem is, when they read what they want to believe, they don't care if it's the truth, or not. lol

Do people really get their news off of Facebook? I never have, but then again, I don't use FB for anything but possibly trying to look up an old friend, which is always a fruitless exercise.

I don't use Twitter, either, so I have no idea what goes on there, but I'm sure it can't be good, from reports I have seen on actual, verifiable news services.

Well the thing is that there are a lot of people especially from third world countries who derive their influences through social media. As a matter of fact some volatile regimes have been toppled over through the power of fake propaganda used on these sites.

I think it's better to ban complete FB pages instead of their individual posts. That will end up as a lesson and it will make them realize that how does it feel to loose huge FB followings within seconds.

Honestly, and this may sound harsh, but I couldn't give a rat's patootie about how FB influences the masses in third-world countries. I'm focused on trying to reinstate some semblance of sanity in this country and not having our elections influenced by truckloads of bullshit that most people are too lazy or ignorant to verify as factual.

          Frank

P.S. That said, I agree with your remedy. lol

Excellent post! HuffPo, DailyKos, CNN, MSNBC and other similar fake news sites should be shut down immediately!

Thank you for your excellent insights!

No doubt! It is propaganda masquerading as "news."

Thank God the "mainstream media" has been rendered obsolete by the Internet. We all owe Al Gore a big "Thank You" for inventing it. :-)

We're out of it then - I don't use FB except to view family pages - and have never sent a tweet - nor do I plan to.

I don't really have much family and if what family I do have was on FB, I'd have no way of knowing that.

Additionally, if I am ever in need of a tweet - I'll buy a tweety bird. :-)

I use FB, for product promotions, and it is a trainwreck, and virtually impossible to find the train driver; Oh, and l apparently have hundreds of friends, (that l have never met).

Twitter, is better although every month or so when l add something new, it is like going to your letterbox and seeing a mountain of crap, (junk mail).

But it is easy to use, and isn't a trainwreck.
