5 Years Living Without a Cell Phone - Minimalist...

We've been living without cell phones for 5 years and we couldn't be happier! We sold our cellphones and cancelled our plans in November 2011 and our goal at the time was to save money, and to see if we could live without something that seemed so essential to us.

It felt like a huge sacrifice at first, and we felt naked without our phones when would leave the house, but we knew that we could always get new phones if we changed our minds, so the risk was minimal.

We love the lack of a monthly cell phone bill, and we've also come to appreciate the freedom that living without a cell phone creates. When we're out and about in the world, it's nice to know that we're not connected and that we can appreciate the present moment without being distracted by notifications, emails, texts, and calls.

We did love having cell phones when we had them, and we don't expect everyone to get rid of theirs because they are incredible tools. This is just an example of one small change we made in our lives that helped us get to where we are today.

I actually currently don't have a cell phone myself. I do have a land line though that I have in my living room, and next to my computer in my office when I work. It only costs me $15 a month for unlimited calling, and I can call anywhere in the United States at the moment.

Sure, it's not convenient for when I'm out of the house, but it's not really all that bad.

5 years without phone JUST to not pay phone bills!? It's ridiculous.
They talk about planning ahead and using alternatives which all take TIME. As we all know time=money. Use that time to make more money and pay your damn phone bills.

Anyone that values "numbers" over TIME, in my opinion, is insane. Spend all your time chasing numbers and you will finally realize what you've done, when it's too late, and that is SPENT all of your TIME and those numbers will not help you get it back, no matter how many you have. Time is the most valuable thing we have and you advise them to spend it chasing numbers. Doesn't make sense to me. Just my two cents. Not trying to start an argument, just trying to get you to look at it another way, not YOURS.

  I have one, for only 3 reasons... My wife, my mother, and my daughter. Other than that, I have little use for them.
  
  If I'm gonna surf... I wanna do it on a big screen with a decent keyboard and mouse.

5 years, lol, l have a no plan, plan with Vodaphone, so pay nothing every month, unless l use it, which is pretty rare.

People ringing me happens occasionally, so l am not pestered by emails and all other crap.

It can be a godsend if you are meeting people at a location, so going without is pretty silly.

At 60, I got my first smartphone 2 weeks ago, (A Motorola Android.) Thanks to Dan's advice I got a great deal, unlimited talk, text, and 2 gigs of data for $24.99 a month.

I appreciate it as a tool to look up stuff and as an occasional way of communicating and for emergencies. I have just bought an Amazon Dot and the only way to set it up was through a smartphone or tablet app. I do not have a tablet. So, that was useful too.

As for walking around with my head buried in it, that will never happen. It's just useful to have.

This must be in USA? You are so far behind in IT. $7.50 buys me 30GB data transfer plus unlimited calls and messages. That's not even the cheapest package.

It's probably because distances in Italy are far smaller, so much cheaper to run a cell tower network.

I had one of those "brick" cell phones 20 years ago when I drove a cab so I could get personals. And, I'll buy one of those throw away pre pay cell phones if I'm going on a long road trip in case I break down. But other than that, I don't feel a need to always be reachable.

However, I have a friend giving me one of her old iPhones. I'll use it for some of the available apps, but not for calling or texting.

  Phones are for reaching other people when needed, not being reachable. You don't have to answer every call and here's the kicker, you can buy a WSO and learn how to switch your phone off or into a silent mode. Duh!

I love that type of lifestyle. I use to have a cellphone where I use to pay $5.00 a month the phone came with 500 minutes of service. I was extremely happy at that time.
