Am I wrong for not going to a Christmas party? [Question for Senior Members]

I have been arguing all morning with my aunt and uncle about why I will not be going to a Christmas party my work place is hosting. They say that I must be more sociable with people in my life (Which I agree with). They also say that if I do not show up I'm literally spitting in my employers faces and saying I'm only in it for the money (Which I don't agree with). I can understand if it is a important employee meeting or an important shift that I must show up to. I had also been told too late about the Christmas party which resulted in me scheduling things over all of that time. I understand the world does not revolve around me and I will have to bend backwards for people at times, but a Christmas party? Really?

What is your opinion of this and how have you handled these things?

Thanks

Your only in it for the money?. That's the only reason I go to work.

Tell your relatives to take a running jump off a tall building.

If people wish to make their workplace a social scene that's entirely up to them.

And please, if you reply back, don't make it in such a large font.

Show up at the party with an aluminum Festivus pole, air your grievances and start wrestling.

What is the airing of grievances?

The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances. I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it!

What's your position in this company?

Also, your employer probably doesn't give a rat's ass about this Christmas party - they most likely throw it because it's en vogue.

I'm a dishwasher. And yes that's what I was thinking too, I would not be surprised if they did not show up.

I would be careful if you show up they may put you to work when the party is over ! Someone will need to clean the dishes afterward. But more important you had plans in place all ready. So don't go !

WHAT! I turned 50 recently and can see anything, (almost) but put it in brail next time, as Claude likes to use his sense of touch!

Your employer has clearly sweated blood arranging a party for you; probably arranged a one to one meeting with Santa or at the very least Rudolph, and what do you do? Kick it in his face.

Well, come the new year when you get that little brown envelope that you think contains your salary and all it contains is a short message saying 'Humbug, you're fired, you miserable little scrooge' it won't be a surprise to you.

Your employer will probably call down eternal hellfire and damnation upon you for turning your back on this once a year opportunity to go and mingle with the great and the good of your company, whilst reflecting that all this has been done solely for your benefit and that none of it is tax-deductable.

I don't know how you will ever be able to live with your guilt.

Would I go? No, not in a million years.

FYI - it's never a good idea to mention bending over backwards in the OT Forum.

You have to understand the purpose of a Christmas party.
It's to build camaraderie....loyalty.... make you feel like part of a team...

If you like your job, and want to stay working there, I would go. If you don't care, then don't go. It isn't a matter of being sociable, it's a matter of not being the next guy to be let go.

And if you are the only one not there? Guess who everyone will be talking about?

Unless your business has a hundred employees or more, I'd go. It will be noticed by many that you aren't there.

When I owned a business with a few dozen employees, we put on a Christmas party every year. I'm not normally a social person, and never saw my employees socially. Not because I didn't like them, I just don't enjoy socializing with anyone but a few close friends.

But we put on the party It was to build morale, create a sense of community.....it really helps your business.

I have heard about your Christmas parties. They are quite good, but the $100.00 admission charge is obscene.

You've got the legend completely wrong, Mark. You have to pay a $100 to leave. And people pay it gladly and quickly.

Actually I got it wrong, it's $100.00 each way, and all proceeds go to to Charity. She's one of Claude's regular girls.

And that $100 doesn't cover the gifts you buy, while you are at the party.

Tell them you will be there and then don't go.

When you get back to work tell them your apartment flooded. Be as boring as possible with the story, make them wish they never asked. Talk about it all day at work. Do it for a week.

THe funny thing is when I was at work that is working for some one. I never went to any Christmas party. Because I said I work with you all for 50 weeks each year and Christmas is for family. I was not hated for it because people understood me. But when I started my own business I had a few day a year for staff days. and christmas was one of them and I enjoyed it. Robert

The last time I hosted a Christmas party for employees, I held up a glass and said, "I would rather be with you people, than the finest people in the world".

And so was born the new Christmas ritual of tarring and feathering your boss.

All I could do was scream, "Where the hell did you get all this tar and feathers? Who's paying for all this? I never approved that order!".

The next week, at our weekly meeting....there were several awkward moments, I must tell you.
