I have an issue With my New Laptop!

Hi, all, a new subject, just got a Toshiba i7, 4k resolution, blah, blah, Laptop, and eventhough it is great it does have a major issue with Photoshop cs2-6 maybe later, as the tabs are tiny and the text is blurry.

I was able to fix the text issue, but not the tabs one? Anyone else out there have a high res, laptop, and this issue?

So far, installing XP mode, (have Windows 7 Pro,) or inserting some code into the registry, and then in the software itself seem to be the only fixes.

Anyone here have any fixes that l am not aware of? Appreciate some help.

PS it is 16gigs, as well, and l don't really want to virtually link back to another one of my computers with cs, as they are slow.

  • Have you tried adjusting the screen resolution? Your old version of Photoshop is most likely not optimized for 4k res.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks

  • Right click on the PS icon (on your desktop, taskbar, Start menu or the exe file), select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Test out the various compatibility options there (OS, resolution, etc.).

In the meantime, post about this on the official forum - just in case they are unaware (unlikely). Who knows, an update might be released to address the issue.

    ps: Don't touch the registry.
  • Yes, Dan, spent a day or so adjusting that or trying to. Also adjusted the darkness of the text, etc.

Very happy with it overall, apart from tini tabs in Photoshop, illustrator and Fontographer 5.2.

Although illustrator automatically flattens transparencies when loading up, so running that one in XP mode shouldn't be a hassle.

Yes, but from what l have read any screen that goes past 1366x768, will shrink the tabs in the same way.

I can also understand why you pushed high res, screens, colors are darker and richer, and the WF, logo looks good, (looks like a bit of a mess in normal res,).

Thanks Faulkner, trying it now, but so far usual small screen issue.

I will mess about with it, and try restarting the Laptop?

PS true l am not crazy about changing one line in the registry then cutting and pasting some file into cs2, others have reported that it worked but others have said, that it didn't or cs2 wouldn't load.

I thought that creating a restore point, and image of the OS, before trying that would keep the risk to a minimum.
  • Why in the world come to WF about this? Go to the source.

    https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop

Oh, and what Dan said. In your rush to stick with the old while avoiding Windows 10, did you consider matching the machine with the software instead of just worrying about if the software was compatible with the OS?
  • Seems to me that the root cause of all your problems is you're using a version of photoshop that is about a decade old. At the time of its release that high a resolution was unheard of.

Sooner, rather than later, you're going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade photoshop, or choose an alternative. In one of your many posts about these issues you're having I recommended GIMP. It's free and so are all of its updates.

However if you absolutely have to use photoshop, you're going to have to open your wallet. As I mentioned, its more likely you'll need to do that sooner, not later.

Alternatively I guess, you can keep creating threads about the issues you're having.

I'm sure he'd much prefer that over spending money. I mean, after all, he only uses Photoshop to earn a living, so what would be the benefit in upgrading? Why should Adobe get any portion of that income???

  • I can understand trying to save money, but Photoshop is only $9.95 a month with a 30 day free trial on the Cloud and includes all updates. If you make money from it, it seems like a needed expense.

      Frank
    • 9.95 a month, is that all, really Shane, a business expense. Beats buying it outright too.

Being in education we can use the whole Adobe Creative Suite for about that per year, on our home devices as well as works, To have it at work is free. Office 365 is free for home and work. It may not pay top money salary wise but it has it's perks.

PS: A true 4k display has a resolution of 3,840 pixels (horizontal) x 2,160 pixels Does yours have that?
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • No Dan the supplier, installed it for me, and it is Windows 7 Pro. w7pro also allows the touch screen thing, so it doesn't seem to have any incompatibility issues.

I had virtual XP as a backup if cs2,etc didn't work, but XP mode eventhough it has installed has also skipped some of the installation steps and won't show any links.

No, Whatr, 2014 onwards, has the UI 200% button that fixes that issue, but it also shrinks the glyph screen in Fontographer.

But staying with a high powered laptop and buying adobe suite when l can is certainly a good option.

But the issue now is getting virtual xp to work. If l can pull that off, then l can access all of my software that has res, issue, I have scoured the internet for a solution to that one, but so far no luck.

Microsoft software has said that my computer is enabled for it, and technicially is should work, but apart from seeing the file in the right spot, and it showing up in "uninstall software" no trace of any link, or no way to start it.

Amm, no it isn't, in AU it is $29 a month and about $60 if l want illustrator thrown in as well.

    Yes!

But the issue now is getting VXP to work, my laptop allows visitation, and has more than enough power, but the frickin thing won't work.

    • I just checked this page for Photoshop in AU:
      https://creative.adobe.com/plans?pro...&store_code=au

It's $22.95 a month on a month to month basis. But if you agree to a one year subscription it's only $11.95 a month and that's in AU dollars ($9.95 US). For someone that makes their living using it, sounds like a good investment to me to always have the latest updates and upgrades.

    • "No Dan the supplier, installed it for me, and it is Windows 7 Pro. w7pro also allows the touch screen thing, so it doesn't seem to have any incompatibility issues."

Just get windows 10, upgrade 7 to it and rent adobe photoshop for 9.95 per month and be done with it.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Ok, but unfortunately this is for US residents, etc, not AU.

    https://creative.adobe.com/plans?sdi...161218100746:s

You will probably find if you click on the link above that no prices are shown.

In AU, it is $23 a month for Photoshop, and about $60 for photoshop and illustrator.

Or almost $700 a year for both. So, l am giving them a new high end laptop every 2 years. I know if l get a business going but still.

Yep, already tried the cloud with cs2, and cs3, (one week free trial) cs2 is ok, but the contrast button was replaced with some crappy alternative, it had a new monkey tool, (basically distorts an image, pretty useless) and it did have the 3D one, and editing cabilities, (both of those needed W10 to work).

So more of a last resort than an option.

As well as the cloud one probably still has the tini tab issue; spoke to an expert today about all of this, and he said, that even if l could install VXP it would still have the tini tab issue with cs2, etc. grrrr!

But l could create a second account on my new one, and change the res for that, so cs2, illus, and FG would all work.

Or if l manage to get VXP on this, one, (there is a software one as well) l could effectively change the res for it, and grab cs2 and put it on the w7 one.

I will mess about with res, now, although returning this while l can before Xmas so l am not stuck with it, is also another option.

But since FG Fontographer also has the issue, (the glyph window was a nightmare on a 1355x768, even worse now) and that has no cloud version, and no patches on the horizion, (already gone to their forum and asked) it isn't as easy as just going for the cloud option.

  • Shane, it's time to accept your fate. Either shell out for the new software or bite the bullet and sign up for cloud service. Time waits for no man.

If your business isn't viable enough to support these truly minimal expenses, you simply don't have a viable business.

Now have some chocolate cake, pet a fluffy bunny, read a couple of your cat posters for encouragement, and get back to work.

No, my business should be viable enough, but it hasn't happened yet. Hopefully it will be soon, but it could take a few more months. It depends on whether l am 99 or 100% competent in my business or not?

In the meantime, my slow, occasionally freezing up, and running out of storage, Laptop will have to do

No, if l get w10, then it is inevitable that it will cripple Adobe suite 2005, so w10 eventhough a good OS, isn't viable for my needs.

And in Au, the cloud option, that may still have the tini tab issue, is $23 a month, or $60 for cs2 and illustrator.

Besides w7 Pro, is pretty impressive overall, so l will stay with that one if possible.

    Given up no, just busy.

After a lot of thinking, l thought that the only option was to get VXP to work, or install the one that uses the free software, then scale up cs2 and illust, so it isn't tini, but unfortunately that also shrinks the working space and makes the top dropdown tabs at Playschool scales.

So l would have adobe suite, as a mixture of large and at scale tabs, with a smaller work area on the Virtual XP area, and Fontographer, with smaller glyph displays.

Unless l create a second account, scale that up and then have FG at a large scale, and try to change the registry and hope that fixes the Adobe Suite one, so it fixes the scale issue. Eventhough creating's two accounts and different scales doesn't have bleeding issues, or the scale of one would affect the other. Or dogs breakfast all of the desktop icons, aaaaarrrggg!

So put up with FG, being too small, and Adobe suite too small or being a mess if l scaled up, for $1500.

    Screw that!

So yeah, today l cleaned the laptop to an inch of its life and returned it!

A high res, laptop shouldn't mean that it dogs breakfasts your expensive software, (FG cost me $650, no updates or patches, and it is current) or older ones.

I spotted a similar Toshiba laptop online in AU, that just came in, which does have 1366x768 Only. So no more BS scaling issues, hopefully this guy will give me my refund quickly enough to grab the other one before Xmas?

    Time will tell.

      • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • Ok, know, but seriously FG needs a magnifying glass to see some of the punctuation on it, and photoshop and illustrator, also needs one, or it is unusable.

All versions of adobe suite, have this issue, except ones done after 2014, that have the scaling option.

High res, is nice, but it also blurs all of the text in web browsing, and it also blorrs some graphics and tabs here and there.

I really don't think that it will make any difference to my work, most laptops are 1355x768.

And Fontgrapher is a key part of my business, as is cs2, so they both need to work.

All high res, seems to do is blurs stuff, or takes elements that had jagged edges, and puts in more gray or softer pixels inbetween.

Which sounds good in practice, (certainly works for computer animation) but for what l am using it for, (fonts and presentation of said fonts) doesn't really matter.

    Yes, l only need $2,500!

  • And all of that is just another reason that professional graphic designers work on 27"+ screens, not laptops.

    • Most laptops I have seen lately are still shipping with HDMI ports. Who knows with this laptop in question, but yeah probably.

  • Pretty hard to lug that thing down to the shopping centre, when it is too hot to work at home?

Serious! At 4k resolution, you get less jagged edges in the work area with cs2, and nicer looking images in preview, that is about it.

But working in a stinking hot house, at this time of the year, since my screen res, makes everything too small, (to go somewhere cool) unless l have a large moniter in front of me, seems silly to say the least.

I know that the purists might cringe, but seriously what does a high res, screen offer.

In CS2 l can scale in to every pixel, same with FG, so no advantages there.

It all seems to boil down to a nicer, richer looking final image, and less jagged edges to deal with when working.

Yep, it had everything, well almost!

    • Unbelievable that you have no A/C in a country that gets so hot. In Texas we could not function without it. The money you are spending on coffee and cakes in the coffee shops should be put towards getting it.

There is a device that blows air and it either heats it up like a conventional heater or cools it down because you put ice packs (cubes) in it and sends out cold air. When our A/C broke down we purchased one of these and it was a life saver, cooled a considerably large area too. Alternatively their are single window A/C units for individual rooms.

I expect you work in coffee shops to pick up women too, they see your creations on-screen and say oooohhh what a talented sensitive man,

Claude tried this but when they peered over his shoulder to see he was just playing Solitaire they left in a hurry.

PS: Have you tried this, a possible fix for your issue.. Works with CS6 but may work with CS2. Still got your high res laptop? Oh well. Watch it on you-tube, more info underneath video

    • So get a desktop with a real monitor and take the money you saved and buy a window AC unit.

  • Then you're screwed. There's nothing you can do and you may as well quit now and save yourself time and money and don't need to come up with any more excuses.

  • No, Kurt, l have found one in AU, that has the correct screen res, and is virtually the same as the one l sent back.

Once l get the money back, and some questions answered by the other mob, then l can act.

No, no air con, in the room l work, in, but l have gas heating, but it is relatively easy to go down to the shops.

    Pick up women, hmmm.

And thanks for the video, but l found that one a while ago, and l won't mess with the registry if l plan to return it. Besides it doesn't fix FG, so...

If he has CS2 he probably already payed for the software.

I wouldn't just keep paying for the same software, well, the same tools plus unwanted tools.

Keep in mind the old software was full price, plus the new software is pay as you go. A whole lot of paying for something already owned.

  • Shane, I no longer even understand your problem.

What is the current, up-to-the-minute heart of the matter?
  • There's a number of Photoshop assets that won't work with older versions and need newer versions of Photoshop, such as actions, addons, effects, plugins, etc. The claim that there's no added value in versions newer than CS2 is bogus.

CS2 is probably fine for the needs of most people, but not for those making a living as graphic designers.
