Virtually any computer will fit the bill, best to go for windows 10 as most software for IM uses it. However, if you are gong to create high quality video's and graphics simply get the fastest you can afford with the most storage and most ram.

    No budget supplied by you?

I will be using, (as of tomorrow) a Toshiba i7, 16ram, 1tb storage, duel core Laptop.

Quad core is faster, but a lot more expensive, unless l bought one of the silver ones, (l am getting a dark grey one) then l would have a serious glare issue with the keyboard faca area.

But l mainly use it for Photoshop, so the need for speed fits here.

I am also getting Windows 7 Pro, so adobe suite has no issues. Windows 10 is fine, but if you want to use old and very expensive software then there is a risk.

Windows 10 has full control over what you use; so if Microsoft decides one day that any version of Word older than 2010, needs to be updated, then they can cripple it, and you cannot stop it.

W 7 Pro, you can turn off updates.

I would also be wary of 4k screens sizes, the picture overall l guess it better, but it can also have issues with some software.

Take a good thought about how you'll use this machine today and in the future years to come.

In a year or more, do you think you might be making videos?

If so, you'll need a computer to handle that processing power.

If you won't be doing video and strictly web based work.

You won't need as powerful computer.

If there's a possibility that you might need a more powerful machine, then buy it. It makes a world of difference when doing heavy processing like video.

I really wanted the new 12" MacBook (so gorgeous)

    But the specs were terrible.

So a MacBook Pro for me.

I'd also recommend looking for something with a Solid State drive.

Old spinning hard drives are a thing of the past.

ASUS ZenBook UX303UB 13.3-Inch QHD+ Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i7, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Discrete GPU Nvidia GT940M, Windows 10 (64 bit)

Been treating me really well. Can't game on it (which is probably for the better) but it's a beast for work.

This is a cool thread since I've been tossing the idea around of either trying to upgrade my current desktop or buy a new one.

I'm still running my old eMachines with Win 7 from about 6-7 years ago.

    AMD Athlon II 2.8GHz processor
    4GB RAM
    500 gig hard drive

    With a used Dell monitor.

I'd like something faster but I absolutely dread the idea of transferring all my stuff to another computer, so I just keep up the maintenance on this one.

Yep, doing that now, and it is a big job.

But l would suggest that you get some external storage, just in case of loss of data from your PC, and it also makes transferring stuff over to your new PC a lot easier.

I have just finished installing all software again, and need to buy 128gig flash drive today, so l can create a mirror image or exact copy of the OS and programs.

The old Laptop was driving me nuts with freezeups and such, so the new one has more than enough power for the forseeable future. And it has w7 Pro installed, l personally don't like someone looking over my shoulder when online.
