I use a HP laptop and I think the brand is really good. Read on ... and let's know which brand you think is the best.

As you may already know, different laptops serve different purposes. Some are specialists while others are generalists. For example, some laptops are designed to have a high gaming ability. So, they don€™t lag even if you€™re a heavy gamer.

This laptop buying guide will help you in choosing the best laptop of your choice.

Here's my opinion on the best laptop brands€

1. Dell

Dell technologies are known to provide technology solutions in the digital world. The company designs ergonomic laptops with value and high-rated performance.

Dell business laptops feature best-in-class performance. And their Alienware gaming laptops come with high definition graphics and gaming performance.

Their devices are preinstalled with powerful processors for maximum performance. The only downside of Dell is their poor customer care performance.

As we all know, Dell manufactures superior devices comprising both expensive and cheap laptops. Let€™s take a look at some of the best Dell Laptops.

2. Apple

Mac laptops by Apple Inc. are known to be expensive and of very high quality. So, if you€™re on a tight budget, don€™t think of Mac laptops. They range from MacBook to MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. With this laptop brand, you never have to worry about quality.

3. ASUS

Asus is a leading technology company in Taiwan that manufactures products in several areas of Information Technology.

The company started out as a motherboard manufacturer and moved on to become manufacturers of PC components, smartphones, servers, notebooks, peripherals, and tablets.

Asus is the manufacturer of ASUS TAICHI, an Ultrabook with a double-sided multitouch display. It allows you to switch between a tablet and a notebook. It€™s worthwhile to see a few Asus laptops.

4. Lenovo

This company has been in existence for over 3 decades. It grew to become China€™s leading manufacturer of personal computers and acquired the Personal Computing Division of IBM.

They are now known for producing smartphones, laptops, tablets, and desktops. A quick review of a few Lenovo laptops will give you a feel of the brand.

5. HP (Hewlett-Packard)

This company has been in existence for a long time. They claim that they don€™t just create technology but they create technology with a purpose to make life better for everyone everywhere.

Well, overall, I€™d say their products have indeed made lives better. When it€™s HP, you€™re sure of quality and excellent customer support. Their devices offer a combo of sturdy hardware and excellent software.

6. Acer

Acer prides itself as the manufacturer of user-friendly, dependable, and reliable products and services that have enabled the world to get access to the opportunity for sustainable development.

The company€™s products include laptops, smartphones, projectors, tablets, cloud solutions, desktops, and monitors. Acer laptops have been found to have a high performance and durability.

The best, l have spent months researching this, and ASUS, Toshiba are the best for their price range, Apple if you have the money.

Although Apple lacks variety from a software perspective.

I have seen 1tb Apples coming into the market, for $3k or more, so they are learning, but l would stay with one at half the price.

I sent away for a Toshiba i7,1tb storage, 8gig of ram, (that l immediately pushed to 16).

It took a month, (almost to arrive from China to AU) but certainly worth it.

They advertised that it had Windows 7 Pro installed, with w10 on a disk, but l ended up with w10 Pro installed and w7 Pro buried on a partition.

I took it back today, since l didn't want w10, and after using it for a few days, consider it the worst OS l have used so far.

It is a mishmash of XP and w7, regarding transparencies or lack of them. I didn't buy a high end Laptop for a crappy looking OS.

It does have a few positives, but plenty of negatives, so yeah, l will probably get them to burn it onto some disks, just in case.

One of the big negatives is the audio playback, regardless of the player used, it distorts the sound.

    And updates.

Nice to try, but never buy.

Bull, as usual. You can't name the task that you can't find a software application for the Mac that will allow you to perform it. If what you are trying to say is that there are not 83 word processing applications to choose from like for a PC - you are correct. A couple dozen high-quality choices should suffice.

Additionally, most of the things Macs are primarily used for come with medium to high-end applications included and seamlessly integrated into the OS. A thing of beauty, I might add. lol

This partially accounts for the slightly higher pricing, before you even consider the outstanding build quality, which absolutely no other manufacturer can come close to matching.

Don't believe the BS. Get the facts before you purchase.

Macs are the Rolls Royce of computers. If someone tries to convince you otherwise, you know that you are dealing with an idiot, with an agenda. Plain and simple.

The Apple consumers tend to be the most open-minded and modest too right? Lol I appreciate the passion for Apple but to make it sound like they're the only player in town just shows your true fanboy colors.

I think they have their place for certain careers but their processors and a lot of other hardware components are light years behind as of now, but their pricing sure isn't....

Asus guy myself but I acknowledge there's a perfectly suited laptop for everyone.

True, XP is a trusted workhorse, but not as nice looking as w7.

Why did Microsoft go with 10, probably because of power and control.

If you put on Camtasia, or voice recognition, your mike is always on. So if you discuss a terrorist plot as a joke, (not a good joke) then that information may be sent of to a law enforcement agency. And you may get your door kicked in one day?

This is all covered in their endless TOS data, which is 1200 pages of gobbly-gook.

Not to mention if you install old software before they cripple it, they will barrage you with advertising.

Fair enough since it w10 is free, but if it was installed on your Laptop, then just frickin annoying.

I know why Microsoft went with the ugly white space around tabs, etc, is it is the latest trend.

Norton does it, it looks ugly, and is confusing when several screens are open, but...

Some companies just go with the latest trend, instead of using their brains.

Windows 7 is beautiful visually speaking!

Just stop with the lies. We get it. You don't like Windows 10, but most of your criticisms are simply untrue.

Microsoft did not cripple your 10+ year old version of Photoshop. Adobe did by refusing to update it.

I can still run Microsoft Office from 1995 on Windows 10. They are not crippling software.

            Lies!

Microsoft did not cripple, geesh, yes they did.

I got w10 on my Toshiba Laptop, installed cs2, and after turning it on the next day, the tabs went into their disappearing act, same with the bridge function, (l only needed to minimize and mazimize that about 15 - 20 times for that to f*** up.

Then after its sneaky update, l tried to use System Restore, and it didn't work at all, so l undid that and the OS went into blue screen, Collecting data to repair the mess, and seemed to go into an endless loop.

Then after setting everything back to default, l tried the 1 month free trial version of it, and w10 forced some more updates, and it was toast again.

Went through this crap on my previous Laptop, but was able to remove it til very recently when l clicked on updates, and the tab cs2 issue was permanent. Ghosting, tearing it out of the registry or using system restore was useless.

Microsoft and Adobe has developed software together, and Adobe naturally wants everyone to use their cloud version for an endless income stream.

You are lucky that Word 95 works on it, my accountant tried that and it refused it!

But he also mainly uses XP, since 10 is tossing a coin with old software, or it can take hours to get the drivers for it!

Seems that l will have to post a new thread on some of the issues w10 has, this is top of the iceberg stuff.

And l don't think that Microsoft is intentionally cripping old software, but,.....well, l will post a new thread.

Again, that is Adobe's fault for not issuing an update to CS2 to make it compatible (or your fault for not updating to a newer version that does work).

It is not Microsoft's job to make sure 3rd party applications work in their OS. It is the software developers' jobs to make sure it works in different OS systems.

Yes, just type in "I F***ing Hate Windows 10" on Google and you will get plenty more.

Rams updates down your throat, so if Microsoft wants to cripple Word, then they can.

I don't know at this point whether l will get the original company to install w7, eventhough the advertising said that it came with it.

They crapped on about it voiding warranty, and that w10 has support til 2025, while 7Pro has updates til 2020.

No probs for me since l will be turning updates off as soon as l get it installed. Undates are 99% BS anyway, and just another way Microsoft can screw its, customer base.

XP is good, my PC still has it, but if you are into pretty l would go with Windows 7.

Windows 7 does use more processor power and more memory, but it has nice looking transparencies, etc.

Certainly more attractive than XP, but a word of warning, Microsoft updates do mess with it, w7, so expect minor hassles if you are into updating.

I have about a 5 year old HP Laptop purchased it at Bestbuy. It had Windows 8 on it when purchased. Currently it has Window's 10 and prefer that over Windows 8. It is nothing fancy just some thing to use. The best thing about it, is it never had any problems other then a worn out key board. If I needed another lap top tomorrow. I would consider purchasing another HP.

    An update, phew, F****g Microsoft!

I found out today after getting a call from the tech, department that my Toshiba Laptop does NOT come with Windows 7 Pro, (they spent all yesterday and some of today downloading what they thought was w7 on a partition, but it turned out to be w10) grrrrr.

Then they wiped off that S**t and installed their copy of Windows 7 Pro, And that has become a nightmare.

They have to find the drivers for each whatever then burn it onto a disk then install it, so the easy to install isn't easy to install.

I have a up to date laptop, which is a pain to install w7 onto.

They had 8 to go when l showed up today before closing, so had to walk away empty handed again, but they will deliver it tomorrow by courier.

So it will be 100% reliable when done, but a pain to fix, if the OS has kittens. Although as long as l do a mirror onto my external HDD, then it shouldn't be a problem.

He offered me a Dell, as a replacement, so l will go and take a look, but probably stay with Toshiba. Dells can have reliability issues after a few years, and crap service.

Yep, Microsoft, is the definition of evil, and wants to ram w10 down everyones throats. And as l have learned makes installing another OS, as a big a pain as possible.

In 2025, if my laptop starts to stuff up, l may not have a choice, but for now, F**** em.

Nothing wrong, lol, l have used it for a few days, there is plenty wrong!

Tab frames are ugly white spaces, but the top of some can be changed to another color.

Video playback for DVD's, or audio is great eventhough the volume isn't high enough. Compare that with w7, where the audio is also great and the volume is much higher.

Audio for virtually any other video is distorted. None or very little distortion with w7.

Can install driver and other updates that cripple old software, (l have read a few of those).

Have to go to System, or scroll down, then on another one for the control panel. W7 Pro, it is there, (one click).

And it goes to a halfway screen when starting up, so you have to click on that to go the the desktop. And the icon shown there is not a person, but a one eyed monster, looking sad, or most likely angry.

The list goes on, not to mention it cripples Photoshop cs2 within 24 hours.

If you are happy with it, then more power to you, but l wouldn't touch it!

Yes, ASUS is another good option, and one of the most reliable on the market, (Toshiba is the other one).

I wasn't crazy about the matt screens though, but since l have one now, it does cut down on eye strain or glare, and a replacement shiny screen should be available on Ebay for $130.

That is the main plus with w10, is it allows 100% control over brightness, while w7, etc, only allow it in steps.

Why is it taking Apple so long to integrate Kaby Lakes though?? When I was in the market I considered all brands but their hardware was no where near comparable to others and the OS didn't benefit me in anyway.

It's something that always struck me as odd for a company founded on innovation.

I'll pose that question to Tim, next time we speak. :-)

After using Macs for 33 years, if there is one thing I have learned, it is that there is a well-thought-out method to their madness.

When I was in the market I considered all brands but their hardware was no where near comparable to others
In a way you are comparing Apples to Oranges, so to speak.

and the OS didn't benefit me in anyway.
Precisely why Windoze exists. OS X is not for everyone. If you like elegance, simplicity, intuitiveness and rock-solid stability, then it is the superior choice. Those things don't matter to the masses. Most people care about one thing. How cheaply can I get a computer. I have $7K invested in my Mac Pro and $10K in the entire workstation. How many people want or need that and even if they do - how many can and/or are willing to spend that kind of money on a computer? Easy answer. Not many!

I'm not one of those that tells anyone they should switch. I just won't tolerate folks saying that any piece of crap from China, built to the lowest possible standards is somehow comparable to a Mac. That's just fantasy and when were honest about it, we all know it.

It's something that always struck me as odd for a company founded on innovation.
Until you are immersed in the experience, you won't get it - and if someone has to explain it to you, you'll never get it. lol

Oh, and I'm much to old to be called a FanBoy. My Macs pay for themselves so I think of it as get the best computer on the planet for free. How can you beat that deal???

My gripe is that for that same $$ and a different OS you could have built something faster, etc. The brand demands a premium and there's little justifcation for it. We have Macbook Pro's, Thunderbolt display, blah blah.

My brother is a director of human-machine interfacing and he's told me as well that on a higher level Mac will never have the computing power that's needed. I saw it myself in our genetics lab, it couldn't handle processing the terabytes of genetic sequencing data. We ended up using Linux and custom built stuff.

He bought himself and all of his employees Origin EON-SLX laptops. What's your thoughts on those?

For the graphic designers or after people who need an intuitive interface, I guess it makes sense? Apple's "designed in Cali" and made in China so I'm not sure about your reference to imported brands either lol

I know you said there's a method to their madness but it's still a tough pill to swallow accepting inferior processing power for a higher price.

Admittedly you probably know more about computers, and you don't value opinions much, although that's all anyone can really post in here outside of physical specs...here's to a continued discussion for me to perhaps learn

This is one of the biggest nothing burgers in computing. In your daily life, have you ever sat and waited for your computer to finish completing a task to the point that you actually noticed it? Seriously? Then you are not performing tasks that even a power user would be tackling. The day that I find myself being faster at doing things to the point that I can't keep up, I'll consider that an issue. If it's the 'numbers' that impress you, well, OK - without me even knowing the numbers I will concede your point, all the while stating that the numbers, in every day, real-life computing - simply don't matter.

              etc.
That can cover a lot of territory. :-)

The brand demands a premium and there's little justification for it.
People justify their purchases in different ways. Myself, I don't even attempt to justify it as who am I obligated to justify it to? It's a free marketplace with something for everyone. I buy what I like and what I want and that is the extent of my justification. Making it all about specs is a form of mental masturbation with no basis in daily reality, as I mentioned above. Personally, I'm foaming at the mouth waiting for the new Mac Pro with complete disregard for how many friggin' megaflops it completes a task in. You've gotta be kidding me. You can buy a Mercedes-AMG E63 S that does 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds or a Mercedes-AMG C63 S that does 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds. Unless you're a professional racer are you going to make that stat be the deciding factor in your purchase or are you going to evaluate the totality of each model? Precisely.

We have Macbook Pro's, Thunderbolt display, blah blah.
Really? If they are so inferior, why in heaven's name do you have them??? lol

Again - what does that have to do with 'real life.' This is a totally bogus inference. We're talking about the average Joe - doing IM, or whatever for a living. We can't have an honest debate if you are going to deal with situations that pertain to the most extreme computer applications. That's just silly.

Google 'Macs at NASA' and see how many Macbook Pros are sitting in front of the team running the Mars Curiosity rover program. That's nice, but again, it proves nothing that should be relevant to our discussion.

He bought himself and all of his employees Origin EON-SLX laptops. What's your thoughts on those?
Since I don't know what those are - I have no thoughts whatsoever. My overriding thought would be that they are the right machine for the job, based upon your brother's responsibilities and knowledge, but again - it proves absolutely nothing in relation to our discussion. Do you use one of those in your everyday computing tasks. I didn't think so. :-)

For the graphic designers or after people who need an intuitive interface, I guess it makes sense?
Thank you. That's the actual heart of the issue. People buy what makes sense for their needs, with total disregard of any other consideration. That's how it's supposed to be. Again, I'm not a Apple Switcher evangelist. I couldn't care less what someone else uses. At the risk of repeating myself I simply will not stand by and allow anyone to categorically state that their $459 HP boat anchor can be compared to an Apple laptop, in any way - shape - or form.

Apple's "designed in Cali" and made in China so I'm not sure about your reference to imported brands either lol
Yes - all the parts are made in China and the Mac Pros are assembled in Texas, but that does not mean that there is not a very wide level of difference in quality of parts that are produced in China. You can be a Yorx TV and a Sony. Do you think they are equal in quality because they were both made in China.

I know you said there's a method to their madness but it's still a tough pill to swallow accepting inferior processing power for a higher price.
Nothing inferior about it. That's just your way of not being able to argue the points without being pejorative in your comparison.

Admittedly you probably know more about computers,
Not really. That's why I love Macs. It's not necessary for me to know anything about computers. All I need to know is that I love using it, It never crashes, I have great applications that allow me to produce a finished product with ease and enjoyment and that my computer will last for years and years without the need to repair or replace it. What more do I need to actually know about a computer? Am I a power-user? Some would say so. Am I a techie? Hell no. lol

and you don't value opinions much
Guilty as charged. In my daily life, the only opinion that matters is mine. If I were shopping for a PC I might value your opinion very highly. I respect your opinion as it applies to your 'personal' beliefs based upon your experiences, but it has no actual or perceived value to me since it is nothing more than your personal opinion.

although that's all anyone can really post in here outside of physical specs..
I think I have clearly outlined that physical specs are meaningless to me since we are dealing in numbers that vary in amounts that we can't measure in our daily lives. Before I had a computer with an SSD my computer took almost 2 minutes to boot to the desktop. With an SSD it now takes 10 seconds. Please tell me how the difference has changed my life, one iota. You can't - because it hasn't. It's meaningless, unless you think it might actually impress someone by telling them that your computer boots in 10 seconds. That would never impress me and if someone actually tried to impress me with that information, I would readily determine that they have much bigger issues in their life than how fast their computer boots. Can insecurity be measured in bits per second? lol

.here's to a continued discussion for me to perhaps learn

What a well thought out and enjoyable retort. I can appreciate the light hearted self-depracation to top it off in the name of keeping the conversation enjoyable.

I would argue that those minutes saved in boot time add up to hours over a year, or years. While you cant quantify the benefit in a micro sense, perhaps on the macro level it adds up?

We own those Mac's because they are free from Wifey's job

The undeniable variable that Apple has going for it, is the value retention. I am always blown away by the resale value an Apple product demands even years down the road. And we'll both agree that something is only worth what other's will pay and with that considered, the net-net cost of Apple products is probably not much different than comparable brands.

In principle alone if I spend a premium I expect premium performance (benchmark results). It's a personal perception of value I suppose and maybe a metric I over-value after reading your post. I do agree the examples I gave were a bit out in left field but they lend themselves to my point that Mac's have, as of late, been notoriously behind the times in their computing power and processors. For the average user, I agree, it's probably

Nope, big difference, l was looking at Apple Laptops a few days ago, trying to find a comparable Laptop to mine.

My one sold for $1,550, and the nearest Apple is about $3,000, with no more than about 256gigs for storage.

But there used to be 1tb ones, although they sold out, for around the 3k mark.

I know some people just want the best, regardless of cost, but for me, phew, $1,500 in my pocket, would allow me to pay someone to do flyers and get me well along the path to wealth.

As well as the fact that Windows XP, and 7 are very reliable OS. Well, as long as you don't update.

And yes Frank Windows 10 is crap! Which means that virtually all Laptop sales in retail outlets has a dog OS.

I had to order my one for China, and then get a team of experts to pull that crap off and put a decent one on.

This story illustrates why some consider w10, to be more of a virus than an OS.

When l tried cs2 it worked initially then w10 updated, then when restarting it didn't wok,(cs2) so l thought ok, l will just use system restore and go back to the point before the updates

Did that and cs2, didn't work at all, so l thought ok, l'd better undo the last restore attempt as cs2 working with disappearing tabs, etc, is better than nothing.

So when l did that, a blue screen came up with a message about w10, system repair, was working on some issue, and was collecting data.

So l thought great, and let it do its collecting and a restart.

When it restarted, it went to the same blue window, and again...

Remember this was a brand new high end Laptop, that basically went into an endless loop, because l tried to restore something and undid it!

In the end l had to press on Restore Default settings, to get some control back.

Yes, w10 is definitely in Beta mode and has virtually all Laptop consumers as guinea pigs to iron out the bugs.

Except the smart ones that stay with w7 or buy an Apple!

You've been on that path for years. Somehow I don't think that saving $1500 on your computer is going to make any difference, at all.

Why do I believe that? Because apparently you saved the $1500 and what's changed to get you further down the path? Allow me to answer that for you. Absolutely nothing!

Additionally, why would you be paying someone to do flyers for you? I thought that was your job.

Point taken Frank, and the ladder is there, but l am not going to rush up it.

Besides l am still installing software on my new one. And then doing some more flyers. And then considering employing someone.

I can make a good income from doing them myself, but need to employ others to get it to the next level.

Of course not, that would require energy, determination and possible progress - God forbid!

That should take a few hours at best. Are you etching the applications onto the memory?

And then doing some more flyers.
                        Have you made one, ever?

                        And then considering employing someone.
I'm considering becoming an astronaut. I think we should both devote the same amount of time to our considerations. OK. I'm done!

Why not successfully get to the first level before having pipe-dreams about Level 2? :-)

Life is short. You're running out of time with an endless stream of excuses for not doing anything. This has absolutely nothing to do with needing a new computer and installing new software. Nothing!

                          Have you made one, ever?

I'm considering becoming an astronaut. I think we should both devote the same amount of time to our considerations. OK. I'm done!

Why not successfully get to the first level before having pipe-dreams about Level 2? :-)

Life is short. You're running out of time with an endless stream of excuses for not doing anything. This has absolutely nothing to do with needing a new computer and installing new software. Nothing!

So - basically, you are conceding the point that you didn't actually NEED a new computer and software to get work done. We all kinda knew that.

No, not really, l did those more than 8 months ago, and about 7 months ago Microsoft in their infinite wisdom, crippled cs2 on my old Laptop.

Since then l have mainly done fonts, but having tabs, (cs2) disappear, etc has been a real pain at times, still usable, but a pain to use.

So l needed a new one, since the old one was running out of hmmm, storage?

And was slowing down, and would have been a nightmare to rebuild, (set back to factory settings).

And floze up on a regular bases, and had a popup trogan, so browsing became a nightmare, etc.

And considering their wasn't much of a price difference between midrange and lower, and Microsofts w10 onslaght was only going to get worse over time.

No, had to get one now!

Well, I believe that's a first for me. Ask around. lol This is bad for my reputation. Time to reduce my meds.

I would argue that those minutes saved in boot time add up to hours over a year, or years. While you cant quantify the benefit in a micro sense, perhaps on the macro level it adds up?
Sadly, even though I'm in the bottom of the ninth, as long as I'm thinking about things while waiting, I would never consider any of those minutes wasted.

We own those Mac's because they are free from Wifey's job
OK. Nothing to complain about, then. Thank your lucky stars. :-)

The undeniable variable that Apple has going for it, is the value retention. I am always blown away by the resale value an Apple product demands even years down the road. And we'll both agree that something is only worth what other's will pay and with that considered, the net-net cost of Apple products is probably not much different than comparable brands.
And the reason for that is because they are still quite viable, oftentimes up to a decade later. There are more older Macs being used as home and small business servers than you could count. That relates to the quality of the build and components. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. I don't think that anyone buying a $500 laptop actually expects to be using it 5 years later. Folks that pay $2500 or more for a Macbook certainly expect to, even though they know they will upgrade long before that.

In principle alone if I spend a premium I expect premium performance (benchmark results).
Those are two words that in my entire life that have never passed my lips, nor have I ever typed them. A non-issue for me. I mean, seriously, when I'm in my BMW do you think that the term. 'pounds of foot torque' ever enters my mind? Of course not. Who cares? How does that affect my day to day driving experience. It doesn't.

It's a personal perception of value I suppose and maybe a metric I over-value after reading your post.
Well, people value different things. That's why we have choices. Some people see all they could ask for in a Harley-Davidson. If you offered me one for free, I'd say thanks, but no thanks. Yet, I would pay a ridiculous premium for a stock 1968 Triumph Bonneville. If brute force is your cup of tea, the Harley gives you everything you need. If communing as one with your bike is the ultimate in your cycling experience, then you'll appreciate the way that the Triumph feels like it's an extension of your mind and body. We all have base needs that need to be met to justify our choices and our relationships - even with machines.

My sister always tell me that the way I look at things and my relationship to them is the hallmark of the Libra's personality. I know nothing about these things, but to me, computers, cameras, boats, cars, plane, trucks and even trains - - - I view them as a type of living art, much more than I do impersonal machines. They all but breathe. Add my documented insanity to the mix and there you go. No further explanation needed. There is absolutely nothing normal in the way I perceive the world around me. That said, if the words 'bench marks' ever pass my lips, I hope that someone hits me with a shovel.

I do agree the examples I gave were a bit out in left field
                  Ya' think?

but they lend themselves to my point that Mac's have, as of late, been notoriously behind the times in their computing power and processors.
A bit hyperbolic. Do some research. Nothing notorious. If they are a step behind and you find yourself wondering why a particular model has a certain set of specs, it usually because they are contemplating skipping currently available components to take a jump with the next release.

For the average user, I agree, it's probably
Your post was truncated, but I'm hoping you were going to say that it's probably a 'moot point.'

Until you've used them all, you can't determine which is 'best.' Feel free to state that you are satisfied with your purchase, but skip the unverifiable declarative statements which are nothing more than your personal opinion.

I don't know how many times I am going to have to post this before people say, "Oh, yeah. He's right. It is just my opinion."

I've used ASUS and Lenovo consecutively but Macbooks are my favorite. If you're on a tight budget but would like a notebook that's durable and budget-friendly I'd go for Lenovo laptops. ASUS lappies are great for gaming and graphic design so they're awesome investments, too (assuming that you're using it to earn money).

Yep, considered ASUS, but they have a 8g of RAM limit, and don't look as nice as Toshiba's!

Most people would never use anything past 8gigs, which explains why most Laptops in retail stores are 8, but l do graphics as a business, so, the fastest chip, and as much ram as is possible for me.

Well, l had to settle on a duel core i7, instead of quad core, but if l keep the operations down to 4 things running at once, (which l do 95% of the time) then the speeds are virtually identical.

I don't put much importance to aesthetics so thats another reason why I've learned to love ASUS lappies and the way they've been designed. Besides, they've upped their look into ones that are sleeker and a bit edgy - not a bit comparable to Toshiba's, of course! lol

That makes sense. I use my Mac and the previous notebooks I've had for word processing, research, and surfing here and there so 8 does it for me.

I have to say, you know your specs well! Good job! :-)

Thanks spent months and months researching all of this.

Hmm, the top of the range ASUS is actually pretty nice looking, but it doesn't have a Disk drive, and only has SSD, which is fine, but not enough storage for me.

I don't like the cheaper ASUS cover, l know, looks like an old Album, but not my taste. Ummed and arred about getting that one for months, but the look and 8 gig limit and w10, always put me off.

          This is my one!

          PS573A-005004 - Toshiba Satellite Pro R50 Computer - Australia :: Toshiba :: Laptops/Notebooks, Storage & Accessories

I liked the silver one as well, but it would have costed $2000 AU with an quad core chip.

Yes, Lenovo, Aser, Dell, all have issues eventually, Toshiba and ASUS, are the most reliable, but all have windows 10 on them, or a virus OS, as l like to call it.

True, no doubt a troll in training will post this elsewhere, but in the meantime. True that it works, and looks ugly and may go into an endless loop if system restore is used too much, but for the most part it ahem,...works!

And sure in 2025 when w10 support is pulled, we will probably get a rolls Royce version of it, (if that is possible).

And also true, that in 2025 when my current one, might be having issues, and windows 7 pro is no longer available, (although XP is still available, although it has hardware issues) l, (dare l say it, get an Apple).

I have messed around with an iphone, and the navigation was faultless, so an Apple is probably droolworthy, but at the moment too expensive.

I heard Toshiba brands before as the best but here's my take on your list:

    1. Dell- you cant go wrong in Dell's, most of the users that I know of (that includes me) likes its durability.

    2. Apple- way expensive, but its looks are attractive.

    3. ASUS- Surging up lately, they produce some of the best gaming laptops out there.

    4. Lenovo- They had a Superfish scandal way back, reason I'm shying away from recommending it to anyone.

    5. HP- Probably have the best international warranty service.

    6. Acer- Frequent hardware failures I encountered with it is the reason I'm not a big fan of this brand

Dell,s have lousy backup service, Lenovo and Acer, and HP, are budget laptops, and for a good reason.

Maybe Dells are a good brand, but if something goes wrong, then good is in the eye of the beholder.

When l got my w10 wiped off, my new Toshiba, l just took it to the tech, department of the store that ordered it for me.

Toshibas are Not sold in AU, because of a ordering messup, back then, main retail outlets only wanted to buy T, with w10 on them, since back then w7 where installed on them.

But finding one with w7 is getting harder and harder, so much so, Toshiba in China sent me one with w10 on it, eventhough the advertisement clearly stated it had 7 installed, and the other one on a disk, (for easy disposal).

I still go into retail outlets, to gloat about w10's as far as the eye can see, apart from Apple of course.

I have also talked to the sales staff there, and most after buying their new Laptop and realizing what a dog w10 is, try to install 7 over it.

Big mistake, as all that does is black screen their product, and they have to take it back.

The only way to do it is to wipe it off the HDD completely, and install 7. But from what l have seen, not easy to do.

Probably need to add a few hundred on top of the retail price, to pay professionals.

Yes, others online who also hate 10, have talked about stringing Bill Gates, and dragging him out by,.....never mind, let's just say, it was graphic.

My laptop has suddenly packed in so this post has really helped me choose my next!

I'm looking to get rid of my old laptop securely though as there is some sensitive info stored on there! I've been recommended CSI Lifecycle ( www.csilcs.co.uk ) has anyone else used these or know of any others they would recommend?

    TIA

I had TWO ASUS laptops, that failed due to POOR QUALITY! They LITERALLY had loose screws that shorted them out! SO, for my last computer, I paid almost TWICE AS MUCH, for an HP!

I think they SHOULD have made it maybe 4-6 mm deeper, to allow for a standard drive, AND bigger battery, but it is likely that SSD drives will get better and thinner, so that won't be a concern. The drive in it is only 1TB, but it is VERY fast for a laptop, and compression makes it so I can fit everything I need on it. OH, and the SOUND is better TOO! With the asus, I had to STRUGGLE to hear some things. On the HP, I have to turn the volume down a lot. As it is it is probably too loud. And that from a computer so thin.

They should have added a two button separate lever system to the touch pad. The system they have is idiotic, and a problem. When I was first using it, I considered returning it, and had to use a mouse. I might have returned it if not for needing it short term. Apparently others have noticed this problem also. I LOOKED at the asus before I bought it, and DID like the separate battery, decent depth, and the separate buttons on the touchpad, but the quality was a deal breaker.

Otherwise, I am happily surprised by the HP. Small, quiet, cool, and fast.

So go ahead and buy HP, but my advice is STAY AWAY FROM ASUS! BTW ASUS has a policy of a VERY limited warranty on all systems less than $500, and you will see PLENTY that are just under $500. The build seems cheap anyway and according to Geek squad they are cheaper to buy than to fix.

GULP, glad l didn't get an ASUS then.

No Laptop is perfect, even my Toshiba one on rare occasions crashes Firefox due a graphics card driver issue.

I had it installed about a month ago with current drivers for everything, so it seems to be a compatibility issue with FF.

My previous Toshiba Laptop also had this issue, but because of the increased power this one flickers the screen, and then tells me, it had kittens.

The old one, blacked the screen and took 20-30 seconds to get its act together.

Toshiba's are not perfect but it gets close.

Yeah, You're right, NOTHING is PERFECT. It is a shame. I had a few toshibas. Actually, I retired them simply because the industry moved to higher specs. So it was NOTHING to do with Toshiba. And toshiba IS an established brand. I picked ASUS because it had great specs at a low cost, but then I found the quality was bad.

I also tried an ACER one. It is a great little computer, but small, and slow. I bought it for the cost and size though. Still, it turned out to be a nice surprise that something so capable was so cheap. My new HP is bigger and more powerhungry, but it has a bigger display and keyboard, and is faster. Supposedly it doesn't even have the mobile version of the i7.

OH, and to frank! I have some programs that even take work to run on a WINDOWS system, but could never work on a MAC, with the MAC O/S. SORRY! In fact the software I am most thinking about has historically required a server version of windows. To be clear, they are named like Windows Server 2012. And HERE is microsofts page for it: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx Apple is nice, and the OS is nice, but it CAN'T run everything! It was never intended to anyway.

Yes, at one point ASUS was $1050 in AU, (believe me that is cheap for AU) but with pulling w10, off and a 8 gig limit, l went off it.

My current one, phew glad l got the i7 and 16g or ram, l recently tried to use W Movie Maker to splice to HD videos together.

Try that on my i3 and it would always crash, this one, refused to crash.

Explains why video editing needs all the power it can get.
