I actually think the Animals or The Kinks could compete against The Stones!

Oh Kim - I love both these groups so much - but you just don't hear anything from them anymore - are they even still together? (I don't think so, although Eric Burdon has been sited in indie circles)

... whereas The Stones keep on keeping on...

Thank you for this - going to have a great evening while I am working to listen and bookmark all of these puppies if there are any I don't already have, while reliving some of the best memories of my life from this period.

rock on, rock the rocking chair....

Then they split and he was solo and did more songs like this:
and war went on to have a few hits themselves, like this:

Oops, I go so carried away I didn't address the Kinks....
This is from their wiki page:
"The Kinks performed the last time in mid-1996. Band members focused on their own solo projects with Ray and Dave releasing acclaimed studio albums. Talk of a Kinks reunion has circulated (including an aborted studio reunion of the original band members in 1999), but both Ray and Dave Davies had shown little interest in playing together again."

Eric Burden/Animals was the first album I ever bought. Still the Beatles and Stones had something that the Animals and Kinks just didn't have. The Beatles had the revolution and Stones had the ability to transcend eras.

Sal, I have to disagree to a point. While the Animals didn't make it through an era, the Kinks did. They actually had 3 or 4 career "revivals' over the years. I'd have to look it up to be sure, but I believe the Kinks put out their first greatest hits album in the mid to late 60s.

I love them both. Although it was kind of funny how you
just KNEW what particular song would be in all those Vietnam
movies that came out in the 80s. Right? You know which song
    I'm talking about!

Quite a difference between EB & the Animals and the Kinks imho.

Hard to compare the grittyness of House of the Rising Sun and
the more lightweight Dedicated Follower of Fashion.

Guess the Stones,Animals and Johnny Cash all had that vocal
similarity of gravel/grit that I still enjoy. But, I also liked the
Kinks and many other groups and "genres"/styles of music.

        Mike,

I have to disagree with you about the Kinks being lightweight. Instead, I call them diverse. I think that you will find that many many music historians call The Kinks the predecessors of punk.

You absolutely nailed it there, Kim without The Kinks I don't believe we would have had the Buzzcocks, pete shelley openly said he was influenced by them.

They influenced The Undertones and very heavily The Kooks. The Buzzcocks and The undertones were punk bands while The kooks are indy.

          The Buzzcocks at their best:

          Great track from The Kooks:

The Kinks were an incredibly diverse group. Their songs were all over the
            place.

            You Really Got Me
            Lola
            Apeman
            Rock N Roll Fantasy
            Celluloid Heroes

I could go on and on. Just when you thought you got their sound nailed
down they'd come up with something totally unexpected.

The Kinks could rock when they wanted to or melt you to pieces.

Just love the Buzzcocks - they are barely heard of here in the states, except for punk stations which are few.

hmmm if the '90's were the '60's upside down', when can we have the 70's & 80's again? howza 'bout today! punk rock lives! (but don't tell anybody)

That's a shame Pete Shelley of the buzzcocks is a legend over here!

The Kinks! I regularly walk over Waterloo bridge and sometimes see the sunset. I used catch a train from Waterloo station everyday.
