Well, as someone on the BBC's web site said today...

...the 'experts' don't know where all this will end, so where does that leave the rest of us?

Billions of years from now, the Earth will be an ice ball. Billions of years after that, it will be destroyed when the Sun explodes.

Between now and then... who knows?

Hmm. Last I looked the neighbourhood pub restaurant (Izakaya) was still running, so all is well with the world.

Freddie and Fannie have never had any influence here, and they've never bought a round in our local, so I think the fact that they are now government employees will not make any difference here.

Got to remember this: The world does not rotate around the US. It rotates around an axis that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole, and last I checked it didn't give a fig for Sterns, AIG, the Lehmans, Meas, Macs, or a Dow Jones.

it means that we can expect change. probably huge change.

we can either go with the flow, or try and run until it catches up......

we will probably be playing to new rules soon if this trend continues

Heck, I wonder how long we would have to wait for the invoice to be paid

Seriously though, I would prefer it if Fannie could do it - maybe she needs the work . . .

The future of the world is a lump of burnt rock when the sun engulfs it during it's death throes - in as few as 100 million years. I am thinking that Global economies, whatever their nature will collapse at that time, too.

EDIT - oops, didn't see your post Paul - guess all you and I have to wonder about is if the earth will go cold before the blast of the sun's outer shell hits it.

Is that why Allen Greenspan said it was a once in a century thing?

It has happened only once this century. Last century it happened every 15-20 years. Does Greenspan know the world will end in 2012? Maybe this will be the last time.

The world doesn't revolve around big business, or our little problems.

The world could survive well (probably much better) without us - and by the time anything happens to this globe, we'll be dust anyway.

An unfolding crisis can be interesting to watch or discuss - as political manipulations can be. Obsessing over them doesn't improve your quality of life and there are many more fun things to do than watch endless hours of TV or reading doom and gloom blogs and articles endlessly.

Being informed doesn't mean you must carry the world on your shoulders. Damned thing is heavy!

Be happy. We still alive now, right?

For sure, we will face food and water scarcity in just a few decades... or sooner.

For sure, now the world is overpopulation. We just double in 50 years ago, from 3,000 millions to 6,500 millions people. Actually, it is not as quick as some business grow their money :p

Then, there'll always be some innovation to save the day, that is what have happened to human history ... and human still alive and kicking!

If the earth doom, then we fly to the moon again.

      So don't worry!

I let the suckers worry about it.

Life is to short to be focused on the doom and gloom
    BS.

Quit watching TV and your life will change. For some reason
my life couldn't be better. Maybe because I don't listen
to stupid predictions of how everything is going to crash.

Or maybe I'm smart enough to know I control MY reality,
so I should focus on making MY life the best possible
    while I walk this earth.

Do you think Bill Gates is worried about the world ending?

This is why many people can't get ahead. Focus is on
things they have no control over, instead of on the things
    that will progress their life.

Simplify, simplify, simplify. Did I say simplify?

That's my mantra for several years now.

Unless you are fully hawked out to the gills the change in the financial landscape (yes massive change) will be easier to digest.

My suggestion to my family is to be pro-active instead of re-active.

We had a similar economic meltdown in the stockmarket in 1973 - 500 points, 1987 -508 points, 2001 -400 points (after 9/11 - but that doesn't count, it was out of cycle), and 2008 - 500 points, and of course the Grand Daddy of all 1929-1932 - 253 points. Percentage wise the 1929-1932 and 1973 were the worst, but savy investors who invested when the market was so far down made millions of dollars.

The people that sat around and whined about how bad the economy was at the time were the ones that missed out on some of the biggest economic booms in history. And now they're the ones who are complaining about how they're so poor and the rich keep getting richer.

My answer? Quit whining, and seize the opportunities!

Um...Paul? Most of the people whinning are so tapped out at this point they don't have anything left to seize anything with.

We've had a 20 year stagflation now that has already drained the average person's ability to invest in anything.

Sure there are those who will ride it out okay - and some that will actually profit during the storm - but that doesn't mean it isn't a bad one. I've not seen it this bad before. I remember the oil crisis of 73 and 74 - I was in Germany at the time and the Germans were getting socked hard - were riding around on bicycles in shieks costumes, LOL. And I was young and more interested in seeing Europe, but I know that it wasn't this hard of a hit over here then.

The 20 year business cycle was Kainsian theory, and Kainsian theory has not worked now for over 30 years. And we can't tell what the FED's motives are for some of the tripe they are pulling. I don't think they are as pure as we are to believe.

Nope - the only time I remember this happening to this extent was 1929 and, of course, in the late 30's in Germany - um....just before Hitler took control of the country. It was the way he was able to grab power. Some of the people over there when I was there still worshiped that guy for saving them from the economic collapse.

Paul, this is not really as simple as this. A lot of people who are whining do not have money to invest. They are much more worried about their incomes and jobs in this situation and they are stuck in jobs and situations that are completely outside their control.

Even those who have money to invest would have seen their net worth decline. Very few people got at the top of the market with all their holdings in cash, and this includes Buffett

Also in emerging markets, the plunge in stock prices is much worse than the US. It is anthing from 30 to nearly 70%. Not only that, many speculators borrowed money and have lost everything and we are seeing suicides already.

I certainly wished that I could have held on to some mutual funds several years ago as they would have gone up several times. But I just needed the money at that time to help my wife cover her property losses. My point is that many people just do not have the resources to look at this as an investment opportunity. Although I am heavily invested and have some left for further investment. I have to be very careful at this stage because I can see that my business is being affected by this economy at this stage.

You are right it is not simple. And people should not be getting their investment advice on this forum. I certainly am aware of people that are suffering through this crisis, and my heart goes out to those who have lost their jobs and homes or are worried about their future.

But the signs for this have been showing for years; with stock prices selling at high P/E multiples, and housing prices beyond the extreme. This crisis is really a "correction" of market forces after years of speculation.

Why are foreign companies buying and investing in the US? The US is the best bargain for world markets, and they are "hovering" to capitalize on our "misfortune"

Watch for investors from China, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Russia, Asia, and others who are flush with cash just waiting for the lowest prices.

I believe this opportunity could last for about another 18 months to 2 years to get some of the best stocks, housing, and real estate at bargain prices. If you don't have the money now, get ready to invest in the next crash in about 15-20 years.

Saddly it is impossible to say exactly when the financial situation in the US will improve, if ever. With the housing market collapse, under its own artificially inflated weight, and the banks that propped up those bad loans are fully feeling the backlash we are in a bad situation right now. What's worse is that every time a major financial player falls, people start claiming that we have hit bottom and things will get better. That hasn't happened and doesn't seem likely to.
