    1. Excellent listening skills.
    2. Willing to learn everything about a client's business, the industry and the niche client's business is in.
    3. Excellent research and knowledge categorization skills.
    4. Ability to identify what you "don't know" and be able to go get it.
    5. Mastery of several different modes of web-based communication platforms (Skype, Zoom etc.) to accomodate your client preferences.
    6. Ability to write bid proposals for acquiring paid work.
    7. Ability to write progress reports and final reports.
    8. Phone skills--- keep calls brief, time calls precisely to fit with client's time to be "Present" and be a useful client.
    9. Recordkeeping skills: records of conversations with clients and research sources, decisions you make which impact the strategies you deploy on the client's behalf. (Stuff like this helps with report writing and strategic communications.)
    10. Be comfortable being the expert. (Do not end your statements sounding as if you are asking a question!)
    11. Master the role of expert (by having bona fide expertise).
    12. Dress the part.
    13. Have an elevator pitch to attract clients in live settings.

Let's stop on the Lucky Number 13.

    Hope these help.

That....and referrals is how many consultants do all their "prospecting". Of course, letting everyone you know that you are a consultant, and possibly doing work for a former employer is popular.

I'm serious here, the hardest thing I had to learn was to keep a straight face when quoting my fee....and acting like I'm selective enough that you're lucky if I work with you. It was a different dynamic than just selling.

      I would like to add;

Being able to quote your fee with a straight face.
Presenting yourself as busy and "possibly willing to accept another client if the work is interesting".
Positioning yourself as in demand by saying you work only by referral.
Getting paid up front, and acting like it's how you always do business.
Promise results that are easily obtained. It's client expectations met that gives you the referrals. In other words, managing client expectations solves a whole boatload of problems.
Don't become friends with a client. It will always eventually go bad. Either they will start asking for favors, or you'll start letting them slide on payments. Be friendly, but not friends.

Consultants, geesh, they are everywhere l turn at coffee shops.

The sucker, "l don't know if l want to invest", the con,...high pressure salesman" l am your friend, buy my s**t, so l can get saleman of the month tin cup.

They are very convincing, but at the end of the day, you are risking your money, and they are going after someone new, and generally not giving a toss if you lose it all or not.

I think you're confusing consultants with something else entirely.

      They are very convincing, :
      You find those things convincing?

And like Whatty said, your post indicates that you don't know what a consultant is.

Forget what you want and need and focus on the wants and needs of the other person. Too many people assume that because they're living in a particular way, that everyone else lives that way too.

There are tons of characteristics as a consultant.

But for me, the # 1 is the "Roles and Responsibilities" as It is important for consultants to understand the responsibilities of their role, as well as the practices and parameters of the job. You may notice that each client has a different take on what the role of a consultant entails. Clarifying your client's expectations and deliverables beforehand may possibly be the single most important task one undertakes.

    I hope it helps
