Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) in Hill Street Blues, and Bunk Moreland (Wendell Pierce) in The Wire

The top 2 picks are good but here are 3 worth honorable mention

1) Dragnet with Jack Webb and Henry Morgan

2) Kojack - Telly Savalas

3) Toma - Based on the real-life story of New Jersey detective David Toma. The original actor Tony Musante, left after one season. The show was reformatted and returned as Baretta with Robert Blake.

I'd add Maxwell Smart, but he's a spy and not really a detective. For #3 I'd probably go with Thomas Magnum.
