How have I been missing this thread? I'm a huge fan of rare and obscure music, especially music from the 60's. Here is my entry. Let the music crawl into the depths of your brain and slip inside this house. |

I was going to say I was surprised Steven, because I had heard of them, but after looking them up, I'm not. Back in the day there were a lot of regional bands, which this band apparently was. They were from Texas and I grew up in Oklahoma, which does explain why I had heard of them and you hadn't. |

Do some research on 13th Floor Elevators. You'll be amazed by their music and their story. About 3 years ago, Dell actually used their song "You're Gonna Miss Me" in one of their TV commercials. Roky Erickson was the vocalist of 13th Floor Elevators and actually lost his mind and was institutionalized for years. About 4 years ago they made a documentary about Roky Erickson. I HIGHLY SUGGEST renting this movie. It's actually depressing, but 13th Floor Elevators have influenced a ton of bands over the years. As a matter of fact, ZZ Top is always giving props to the Elevators. Here is a song from Roky Erickson's solo projects. Most of his songs are about vampires and demons, which he constantly fought in his head. |

One of the most influential metal bands, who sadly never made it as big as Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin etc. I think the most money they ever made was from Metallica covering this one. And another: and another: and another: And because Steven Wag's posted some Uraih Heep here's one which apparently has made the German Top 10 three time since it was released in 1971. (oh and by the way thanks for the Starcastle). That's all for the time being. |

Imagine a cross between Pink Floyd, Nirvana and The Beach Boys. Can't quite get your head around that? Here they are - Porcupine Tree. They're playing in Sydney on Feb 6 - woo hoo. |

Not sure if you'd consider it obscure, but Blue Cheer was definitely one of the unsung heroes of Rock n Roll and Metal. |

Come on admit it, you're a closet hippy aren't you? Are you coming out? Not that there's anything wrong with that of course.

because I grew up in a classical home that just happened to watch The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. If you've gone through this thread and checked out some of the stuff I've posted, you'll see that my musical tastes are all over the place. And this is pretty common for most musicians anyway.

You might want to check out some of the Porcupine Tree stuff I posted. At the moment they are regarded in the way that Yes or Floyd were in the 70's, or Rush and Marillion (now there was a band) in the 80's. As I type this I'm currently listening to Rush's A Farewell To Kings album, which was their first prog type album. Xanadu is still my favourite piece of music ever. All the best from a hippy/headbanger with a touch of punk thrown in.

Before Brian Johnson replaced Bon Scott in AC/DC, he was in a band called Geordie. Here's a barnstormer a ditty from said band. I defy anyone to NOT tap their feet along to this one. |
