Who would be the male equivalent of Martha Stewart?

Someone that designs and builds wood furniture, repairs or fixes up cars, builds cold frame gardens, does lawn care and yard design, etc.

Is there anyone?

And don't say Red Green. Though he may be the closest I can think of, even though that would not be a serious answer.

I was going to say Tim from Tool Time

Actually I can do everything you mentioned and so can most of my friends.
You call it being a "Man's Martha Stewart" we call it simply being a country boy.

But Al was the one that could actually do the stuff.

I sense sitcom potential here. A Martha Stewart-like character married to a Red Green-like character. They're both creative and do things around the house. He duct tapes stuff and she comes along and rubber stamps flowers on it.

Anyway, so who would be the "go to" guy if you needed help with something? Is there no "celebrity" that is to men what Martha Stewart is to women?

The only close to celeb I can think of is Norm from This Old House.
I never got into Martha. What I have seen of her reminds me of the old time females who could make almost anything from nothing, simply because they had to.
In fact that's how I learned mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, you get the idea.

Close Thom, I immediately thought of This Old House, but not Norm, I'm thinking of the founder/pioneer of the show, the guy who started the whole DIY / Home Improvement TV niche :

    Bob Vila

I thought of Villa also, but Norm was the guy in the trenches doing the work.
I think if you put the two in a build off of anything, Norm would smoke Bob.

True... just like Al, but Tim got all the fame...

There was another guy, on PBS a while ago, a master-woodworker, who was amazing... everything truly handmade, he only used cool antique woodworking stuff like foot peddled sanders, drills, lathes, etc... I can't remember his name at the moment... will go do a search...

Edit: It was Roy Underhill - "The Woodwright's Shop"

That's also why I didn't mention Bob Villa. Norm was the handyman!

Alone in the Wilderness, DVD and VHS available, the story of Dick Proenneke

    The Frozen North
    on DVD and VHS tape

For more than 30 years a man by the name of Dick Proenneke lived alone in the Alaskan Bush. His only neighbors were the wolves and grizzly bears and his only transportation was his canoe and a good set of legs. Through the years, Dick kept written journals of daily life at Twin Lakes but would also document much of his adventure on film with his 16 mms Bolex camera. The Frozen North is Dick's own filmed account of his life alone in this "One Man's Wilderness", produced from original footage not included in "Alone in the Wilderness" or "Alaska Silence & Solitude".

Alone in the Wilderness on DVD and VHS tape

Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, and cut and peeled the logs he would need for his cabin. Dick Proenneke returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years. Dick filmed his adventures, and Bob Swerer later turned the film into a video so we can all watch this amazing man build his cabin by hand.

Alaska Silence & Solitude on DVD and VHS tape

Alaska Silence & Solitude is the follow up to Alone in the Wilderness, filmed 20 years later. Bob Swerer and Bob Swerer Sr. visit Dick Proenneke at his famous cabin on Twin Lakes where the wildlife is still abundant and the scenery is spectacular.

I gotta go with a local favorite.

He does remotes for the morning news, but he also has an in-studio show called Ask Gus. It's all home-related (no car repairs, for example), but he tackles all kinds of stuff.

    Here's his page...

Ask Gus, home improvement advice from FOX 6's Gus Gnorski - WITI

I don't think there IS a male equivalent of Martha Stewart. And, in the words she made famous...that's a good thing.

    All the best,
    Michael
