How to deal with pain from sitting all day?

Recently I left my job and started working full time online. I spend an average of 10 hours at the computer working currently and I've come to realize that my biggest obstacle right now is simply sitting in a chair.

I know that sitting for long periods can mess you up, so I have been taking micro breaks every 15 minutes to stretch and stand up for a moment. I also exercise 3 times a week and run 5 times a week.

I keep a very active lifestyle but no matter how I adjust, sitting at the computer still hurts.

I've considered standing for most of the day or maybe trying out a yoga ball.

Has anybody else come across this issue? If so, how did you fix it?

I have been seeing a chiropractor lately for the same problem. Personally I am laying on my stomach with a pillow under my chest so my upper back can rest lol. I have been getting massages and adjustments. The best thing I have found at home is to use a massage ball against the wall or on the ground to ease the muscles.

the biggest problem isn't just the sitting it the effect on your neck if your head is tilted down looking at the screen.. that action is part of what cause carpul tunnel ..

id say if you are working on a laptop get a recliner and a table you can swing over the recliner to work on the laptom on ..or mount the monitor high enough so you have to tilt your head up..

I i had back injuries from lifting at work and compression because i would go home and sit at the computer . and it took years to recover from.. without medications.. if you go for the meds you just keep doing what is injuring you .. and end up getting worse and worse untill they are fusing your spine together ..

on your break you should get one of the pad you heat up in the microwave and lay down with it against your back ..and if you are on a laptop if you are watching something or reading something.. it may help to lay down with the laptop next to the bed on a table if you don't have to do major typing

    Some ideas for you....

    - I take a 5-10 minute walking break every hour where I get up and stretch, walking around for a few minutes too
    - I stretch for 10 to 20 minute on waking to dissolve blocks which lead to pain
    - I take a 30 second icy cold shower on waking; miraculous effect it's had on my back pain and neck stiffness
    - I exercise for 60 to 90 minutes, 6-7 days a week....been running 10 miles 2-3 days a week and either walking or doing interval training on other days....being fit helped me keep my body strong, allowing me to avoid the suffering commonly associated with staring at a glowing screen and sitting for hours daily

I exercise a few times a week also, and work long hours, so l would suggest that you get a comfy chair.

Forget about hard chairs like wood or plastic, that will make you numb in no time at all.

I aim to stand up as much as possible - I haven't bought a fancy desk, just a pile of magazines to get the laptop high enough! The eyeline isn't ideal, so I'll be getting an extra keyboard and/or external monitor. So, I end up standing up a lot during the day, and taking breaks to have a sit down, which I think is definitely more healthy than the other way around.

More healthy maybe, but less productive and more annoying.

I have been going to a local Starbucks a lot because they have high tables I can stand at and work. I don't do it every day, but probably 2 times a week for 4-5 hours. I'll alternate sitting and standing while I am there.

    Bars work too

You can also grab this desk.

Realspace Magellan Pneumatic Stand Up Height Adjustable Desk Espresso by Office Depot & OfficeMax

It's on sale right now. If you sign up for their email list, you get another 20% off. Pick it up in store and you get another 5% off. I got one for $227.

AARP magazine had a cover article many years ago: "Sitting is the new smoking"

I get up and walk around a lot. But sometimes I elevate my keyboard on an upside down wastebasket and elevate my screen. This way I can stand at my desktop computer.

It's healthy to get away from the computer, not just physically but emotionally as well.

And when I watch TV, I walk back and forth, always facing the TV screen. Too much sitting is dangerous!

Yes, about a week ago I noticed I have a problem with sitting at the computer for long periods (about 10 to 12 hours per day).
I woke up one morning with a stiffness and pain in my right thigh starting from just behind the knee.

I was having difficulty walking properly for about 3 days. I was thinking that I had injured, or strained the mussel between calve and thigh (directly at the back of the knee), because that is where the pain was concentrated most.

That pain is almost gone now but the discomfort is still there. I'm trying my best not to remain seated for too long periods anymore.

I am having no pain in the other leg - only a stiffness between the knee and ankle.

Like mentioned before, take a variable desk, so you can stand and sit, combine that with 2 kinds of chairs.
A normal good chair and a knee chair, so you can combine sitting and standing in different ways.

Do 15 minutes of yoga everyday. This will enhance your concentration power and you won't feel fatigue after sitting for long periods of time.

There are specialized cushions. A good massage by a professional can also help you. Maybe you have the joints badly in place.

I take quick breaks every hour or two or do "chair" exercises. It's best you have that checked with a chiro.

I've been working while sitting for more than 10 years and with deadlines and stress, combined with less sleep which adds to the pressure, I reached a point where exercise wasn't helping anymore, it just adds more pressure that my body has to endure. Buying different ergonomic chairs messed me up even more.

Finally, I decided to see a physiotherapist and after diagnosis, the doctor found multiple twists in my body (right feet and knee, hip, spine, non-existent back muscles on one side, shoulder and neck twists). With specific training exercises designed to balance my body, I started feeling better and the lower back pain reduced a lot.

I'm under a lot of pressure right now without enough time to exercise. When I'm done with all this, I'll focus on relaxing, stretching and working out again.

I like to use a foam roller and do this stretch...

Feels like heaven. Just laying with the foam roller under my lower back and both legs down on the ground feels great as well. When I do this regularly my back discomfort is nonexistent.
