GPU or Video Card is the actual miner in crypto mining, it is the most essential part of your rig. More GPU's or higher GPU's the better ex. NVIDIA GTX 1080 or AMD RX470

Risers is where the GPU's are attached for connection onto the motherboard and also used for better placement or positioning. Lastly, power supply and cooling system.

ASICs or GPU mining rig? GPUs can be easily upgraded but ASICs are much more efficient. I have read a lot of articles claiming that ASICs is too small and doesn't last long.

It's not dead, but it's difficult to be profitable if you're mining just bitcoin.

I'd look at some altcoins like Ethereum, NEO, Litecoin etc...

The electric company's are happy when you mine bitcoin. The older bitcoin miners are not profitable. Plus if you live in the US a small solo operation is not going to compete with the large mining farms overseas.

You can mine for medical & science research and benefit society. You're not wasting electricity hashing but helping humanity. .
@ doorJi you can find used asic machines on ebay they are not out of stock.

Thanks to this post. I've started reading about bitcoins and cryptocurrencies. Wow! my mind was blown.

As per your question, people are using ASICs now to mine.
Others say it's not worth mining bitcoins using GPU because either you get dust or nothing.
