Elon Musk's Plan to Send Humans to Mars in 7 Years

All done with his B.F.R. (l won't say what this means here, G rating forum) but lets just say a big rocket.

Assuming that it doesn't blow up anytime soon, or crash, you can go anywhere on Earth in an hour for the cost of a plane ticket, (possibly first class?).

Men to mars in 7 years, unlikely, but l like his enthusiasm.

    At least this is real

Everyone remember the MarsOne debacle a few years ago? We had members of the forum (the usual suspects) arguing that it was real...even though they had nothing besides a website. They had a mars habitat planned...and were going to pay for the entire project by running....I'm not joking... a Pay per View of the entire project.

We had arguments...heated arguments about not believing...and not being open minded.
Neal deGrasse Tyson had the two 'founders" on his science show. A new low. And of course these guys were on talk shows because they were taking names of volunteers....and it was all a big nothing.

Well, I'm open minded to the Musk plan....because he's not a schizophrenic dreamer that isn't doing anything.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Arguing with nut cases is for bigger nut cases. The only way to deal with people like that is to do what your wife did on your wedding night. Point and laugh.

      You're welcome.

Do you see Elon or any of his family getting ready to go to Mars?

      Why not?

It counts as long as the people you are working with aren't imaginary.

Until the day I met him, I was hoping Riffle was imaginary.

I still hope it was all a bad dream.

Fascinating that Mr Musk's plan to send people to Mars is seen as feasible, possible and a good thing. However his plan to build the world's largest battery array for renewable energy sources in South Australia is a joke that'll never work and is a complete waste of time, effort and money.

Apparently he knew he was screwed on that deal from the start and bought batteries from Samsung at a price just to break even. Publicity stunt.

His partner is Panasonic. Samsung is/was competition.

I know almost nothing about his Mars project, and nothing at all about the batteries. i just know that Musk has done things in the past, and so I'm not dismissing his projects out of hand.

The MarsOne "mission"? The guys had nothing. No track record, no funding, and they built nothing except a website.

Amersfoort, September 3rd, 2017 - Mars One releases revenue projections for the Mars One Foundation and its commercial arm, Mars One Ventures AG. The projections support the financial feasibility of Mars One's private human mission to Mars.

The Mars One Foundation (the Foundation) organizes the mission and the training of the candidate teams of Mars settlers. It does not act as an aerospace company: hardware for the mission will be built by third party established aerospace companies.

The Foundation has a large community of followers and supporters, which will steadily increase as the mission progresses. The Foundation receives income from donations contributed by supporters, and a license fee from Mars One Ventures. The projections illustrate that the donations and the license fee fund the mission throughout the current Mars One mission timeline

As for the Tesla Battery in SA, they are planning to spend 5 billion for 20 minutes of power when wind, solar are not up to base load levels.

Or if should mean SA will have no more power blackouts?

Time will tell, but 5b, compared with 500m for a clean coal fired option?

Wrong (again). It was in 2015.

Last week, state regulators approved an emergency rate increase for Mississippi Power in order to keep the company afloat as it completes the increasingly-expensive Kemper plant. Mississippi Power customers will see a temporary rate increase of 18 percent -- a change that could become permanent, depending on the utility's financial health.

Amazing how you allow "new technologies" like this to have a few hiccups along the way, but don't extend that to renewables.

It really doesn't matter anyway, by the time the "hiccups" are fixed in clean coal, renewables will have made the whole thing irrelevant anyway.

Amazing how you allow "new technologies" like this to have a few hiccups along the way, but don't extend that to renewables.

It really doesn't matter anyway, by the time the "hiccups" are fixed in clean coal, renewables will have made the whole thing irrelevant anyway.
No Whatti l don't make allowences for anything, l just assumed that clean coal was proven, tested etc, but obviously not.

Let's hope that the battery farm doesn't have any hiccups.

Clean coal always was, always will be, a myth. That's why I used the analogy of healthy ebola. Just because it happens to a fraction cleaner, doesn't make it clean.

As for the Tesla Battery in SA, they are planning to spend 5 billion for 20 minutes of power when wind, solar are not up to base load levels.

Or if should mean SA will have no more power blackouts?

Time will tell, but 5b, compared with 500m for a clean coal fired option?

Well on track? Their website just lists all the proposals, studies, and projections they are making. Heck, I could do all of that myself, without ever leaving my basement.

They aren't on track for anything. They haven't built anything. They haven't started construction on anything. They will keep running "Feasibility studies" until they get evicted from their mom's basement.

            I liked this press release:

            https://www.mars-one.com/news/press-...uation-at-us-3

Mars One Ventures AG announced that the share capital increased by 478,887,500 shares for the takeover. The Swiss Commercial Register has approved the capital increase based on an independent valuation report by a Swiss auditor, valuing Mars One at US$ 389,300,000 (which is the equivalent to € 368,742,600 at the current EUR/USD exchange rate of 1.06).
            ROFL.

They're going to colonise Mars with capital of US$389 million.

To put things in perspective, in 1969 the cost of a single Saturn V rocket was upwards of US$375 million. That's in 1969 $'s - not adjusted for inflation.

            Source: https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/...nds-giant-leap

OK, there have been huge technological advances since 1969, but seriously.

Whatty, I have it on good authority that they plan on using a couple Raspberry Pi's to run everything.

So it would 100s/1000s time faster than the computer on Apollo 11?

The problem isn't technology, the problem is the one way ticket to nowhere.

The issue Whatty was discussing wasn't power, but cost. See, Raspberry Pi's are cheap.

                    So we're up to $10.

I hate to second guess Musk's ideas, but it seems to me colonizing the moon instead of Mars makes more sense at this point in time.

If it were me, I'd be looking at towing asteroids with valuable minerals to orbit around the moon and then mine the minerals on the moon were flying in and out of space is much easier due to 1/6 gravity and no atmosphere. Then only after the minerals have been processed take them to earth.

There's a fortune in gold, diamonds and other elements and minerals in asteroids and due to the profitability space mining looks to be the best path to space exploration.

These are people who push forward the limit of the entire humanity

People like Elon Musk spend his life trying to leave a sign, while others are complaining or wasting

Surely it will be done, by him or by someone who will follow his footprints
