    Don't do it. It's a very strict diet, and if you don't do everything right this can put a strain on the liver to convert fats and protein into glucose. In addition your body may lose the ability to produce compounds called glycoproteins, which are vital to cellular functions. Always check with your doctor before going on any weight loss program.

      The problem with that advice is most doctors know precious little about the science of nutrition and end up spouting the received wisdom handed down by advisory bodies like the AMA.

      Mark, you haven't defined why you're asking about ketosis or how you'd define success. As Ben mentioned, much will depend on your intentions and current condition. But in any case, don't take advice from general forums like this.

      I've been restricting carbs in my diet for over two years - after conducting considerable research - and have found many health benefits. A keto diet is a little different, and probably more geared to specific conditions.

      My recommendation is do as much research as you can. The good news is that a week or two of focused and well-directed research will put you ahead of most doctors and virtually all self-proclaimed nutritionists on the topic. For me, the books by Gary Taubes proved a good starting point.

      Good luck. There are few things in this life more important than how we choose to fuel our bodies.

        The keto diet does have serious risks, especially for anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, impaired liver/kidney function, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or heart problems. Some of these conditions may be undiagnosed.

        For one thing, it's high in saturated fat, which has been linked to heart disease. Additionally, a nutrient deficiency and constipation could occur since the keto diet is usually low in fibrous foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

        Inadequate protein intake will result in loss of muscle mass, leading to a false assumption that weight loss is from the breakdown of fat.

    Hey Mark,

    I've been doing low carb paleo/primal for a few years.

    It's been very good.

    Keto can be difficult on the body if not done properly.

    What are your goals? fat loss? better health? better energy?

    If you want to go keto, read/listen to the new book by Mark Sisson called Keto Reset Diet, on how to transition into Keto effectively. Leanne from Healthfulpursuit.com also has some real good info on keto.

    All the best.

        Must be small?

        Claude has a new diet out, called the Donut way.

        That requires getting dunuts delivered straight to your door, but the servings are smaller, (bigger hole).

        Or the Cream and Cherry on top Way.

        YOu can have anything you want as long as you swirl Fat Free, cream from a container into it, (and a cherry).

        But a bowl, (no not again) of cornflakes, with 15 cm's of cream and a cherry on top tends to kill off the lose weight part.

        But Claude is working on running 15k's afterwards, so it should work?

        I would personally go for the Eat Less Way, while you slowly cut out s***t from your diet, go to a large shopping ctr, and do a few km's of walking there, (at least you won't get bored s***less, walking around the block a few times).

    The only way I've ever been able to lose weight is through low carb eating. My goal was 20-30 grams of carbs daily. After a several year "break" from low carb dieting, it's time to get things under control again.

    So, I was just checking on some of the latest research before starting up again.

        Had some stops and starts through the holidays (and beyond) but am back on track now.

        I'm losing fat, have more energy, gettng things done, and feeling good about the direction.

        My wife has joined me and so it's a family adventure.

  • I am currently on it. Have lost 30 lbs in 4 months with no addition of exercise. My best advice...

    Make sure to have a cheat meal when you plateau or start getting headaches.

    I have used Atkins for years, on and off. It's the diet that works best for me. It's a tough diet to follow if you don't have good will power. I use it for big weight drops, then transition into more of a Paleo diet. The thing is, the minute you drop out of Keto, you are going to start gaining weight again, so if you aren't prepared or have a plan to maintain your weight, it's easy to see the weight rebound quickly.

    Make sure you are ok to eat a lot of eggs, cheese, meat and salads. If you go out to eat with friends or family, try to find a place that serves a Ceasar Salad. Have a chicken breast added and have them remove the croutons. It's very common at most restaurants, so you don't have to sit around and pout while everyone else is eating.

    Good Luck!!!

    I'd not try this diet. I've been working on losing weight and building muscles for a few months already. I attend gym, run two times per week and do exercises at home following the tutorials from this website. I should say, I'm satisfied with the result. In my opinion, it would be great for you to ask a professional trainer as he/she can choose a proper complex of exercises and the needed nutrition. Good luck!

      This. Nice job Dan!

      I actually use Weight Watchers, which is really nothing more than portion control, smarter choices and activity.

      Since January I have lost 30 pounds and have maintained the loss.

      I can't do diets with strict food choices. I like food too much. But I CAN control how much of it I eat.

      Well...MOST of the time

      I took up running a few years ago, but with the drop of 30 pounds, my knees feel better and I routinely run half marathon distances. My goal next year is a full marathon (my longest run to date is 16 miles, so I'm almost there).

    i stop paying attention to people giving advice on what to eat .. based of of what people ate before 10,000 years ago.. or because of the way are teeth and jaw are set up .. and the proceed to explain diets that require lots of refrigeration to afford to eat that way, juicer or blenders ..or food shipped from 7,000 miles away to be fresh or organic ..

    humans evolved after cooking fires and stone cutting tools and tubers are easy to grow ..and store in the ground ..but need to be cooked ..human general stayed near sources of water ..and it is much easier to use those long straight pointy sticks to hunt fish.. than big animals that are not trapped in pits or stuck in mud ..and fish can be dried and salted .. and salt is easy enough to get by evaporating salt water .

    Nope Mark; not long term. Just being on it for 1 month was all I could stands.

    My advice; exercise for 1 hour daily, eat plenty of fruits and veggies, drink lots of water, and you'll be in good enough shape that, at 43 years old, if you dye your hair with shoe polish, may still get carded. Happens to me sometimes. I just don't use show polish.

  • The most important thing in a diet, I'm bias about mine as I make $$ with it, is about learning how to eat correctly and learning how to keep introduce activities into your daily life (excersises/sports).

    You have correctly learned to diet if you allow your self to pig out, once or twice per week, and you immediately know how to take all the measures to go back to your healthy lifestyle.

      If you allow yourself to pig-out, once or twice a week, you haven't learned anything about dieting. You can gain back what you lost in a week, with one good pig-out. If that doesn't happen you really need to learn how to pig-out.

      You make money, with this, ay?

      • Of course, you just hit the key, learn how to pig out. Once you learn how to eat, even on the days you pig out, they are nowhere near your previous eating habits.

        Obsessing over a diet and maintaining purely strict demotivates many people and leads them to usally just stop dieting.

        Learning to eat correctly is a slow and steady process. Which includes learning how to pigout, how much you should pigout and how to later take corrective measures about it.

        Life is not white and black my friends, we always need to find a balance.

        Cheers

        Good luck in your diet, remember it's a process and you will learn how to eat correctly.

        Having cheat days are important as it will help you keep motivate and continue with your diet.

        What ever you do, remember why you started to process in the first place and never give up!

          This is a term that should be eliminated from the vocabulary of anyone purporting to teach dieting methods.

          In the next post, you use the term, "cheat days." This is a much more restrained term that should always be employed in place of the other.

          Most of dieting has to do with one's relationship with food, especially at an emotional level. Buzz words can have significant impact, both helpful and destructive.

              Spare, me. Some folks believe in what Tony Robbins is, 'all over.' You gotta be kidding me if you think that gives the diet any additional credence. It doesn't.

    I have a very good friend who is doing the Keto diet - she lost 22 lbs in around 3 weeks - her skin looks beautiful and she is very happy and healthy.

    She does take cheat days tho - and I think that with every diet plan there should be a break when you just eat normally (moderation is the key!)

    I am personally doing a detox first - something very similar to the Red Tea Detox that is a huge seller on Clickbank and I can tell you I notice a difference -

      doing a detox for a few days will likely get you into ketosis.
      The energy that people report during fasting.. water fasting or juice fasting is due to the body producing ketones as an energy source instead of glycogen (sugar).

    I'm not exactly sure what the "Keto Way" of eating is.

    I've had great success with the Whatty Way of eating though. It's a simple 4 step process:

    1) Open mouth;
    2) Insert food;
    3) Chew food;
    4) Swallow.

    Works like a charm for me.

      No doubt you are an advocate of the new, revolutionary diet sweeping our planet....

      1) Open mouth;
      2) Insert less food;

      I forgot to add my exercise regime:

      1) Vigorously punch garden gnomes in the face.

      That's all.

    I've got a free facebook group that I can add you into if you would like and have written numerous articles about keto.

    Key importance is to get your electrolyte levels right as you lose a lot of salt when you start a low carb diet.

    No need for keto, just go low carb - meat, fats and low carb veggies. You'll get all your vitamins and all the advantages of keto

    Medically, professionals usually recommend an average of one to two pounds of weight loss per week when losing weight the "traditional" way. Is the keto diet any different? At first -- within the first several weeks -- you'll lose mostly water weight due to a decrease in calories.

    Since my last post in November last year I am still maintaining the weight loss using WW and better food choices along with walking, running, biking, etc.

    I've had a lot of conversations with people trying diets like Keto, Atkins, etc. and here's what I have learned. Not counting MEDICAL reasons for these diets (if there are any) most of the folks I talked to try them because they simply don't want to count calories. They want a list of foods they CAN eat and CAN'T eat.

    In other words - laziness

    I get it. I love shortcuts.

    At the end of the day, whether you count calories or work off of food lists, the key is will power. Self control. What I like about WW is that their point system accounts for more than just calories. And they actually make it pretty easy with their app. When I shop, I use the apps bar code scanner to find the point values of what I am buying.

    I am one of those that can't give up on one type of food or another. I like meats, chicken, breads, pasta, one-pot meals, stews, etc. So I still eat ALL of them. In moderation, in conjunction with exercise, and more of it whole foods rather than processed.

    We're all different. Whatever works best for you.

    And doctors hardly know bunk about nutrition. Consult an ACTUAL nutritionist.
