My Blood Squirted Out !!!

Some months ago I discovered I may have hemochromatosis

After much fudging by the GP I finally got into the venesection program at the NZ Blood Service.

So far they have taken a litre of my blood - my hemoglobin is still normal so far.

People with hemochromatosis store iron in the body faster than others - this was an evolutionary advantage for our celtic ancestors who enjoyed stabbing each other & having sword fights.

But nowadays its about as useful as a tonsil or appendix, actually worse because its poisonous & is terminal if untreated.

So I am a natural Viking Gladiator and must squirt blood.

Squirting blood you see while it may kill others - has no affect on us Celtic Warriors - we actually enjoy a good old blood squirt.

Anyway they cant pin down any genes yet so are doing a trial by taking my blood and seeing if I run out of iron and stop making red blood cells.

After the first one my red blood cells were still high so after the 3rd venesection I will know for sure - if I am a natural born Blood Squirter who was bred for stabbing and slaughtering.

Well Gareth - if that turns out to be the case, we will finally understand the point to some of your posts.

I'm a bit skeptical, Gareth - seems like it would depend on the size and duration of the "squirt".

There has to be some sort of joint venture we can do here!

I am on the opposite side and must inject apoetin into my belly to convince my body to create more red blood cells, and when does not work get about two or three transfusions per year to chase the anemia away.

So can we run a 7000 mile long tube and when you need to bleed let me know?

Is this the same as epogen? If so I get two shots a week in my stomach for the same reason.

Yea...I think that epogen is the brand name. I get mine from VA so of course get the generic stuff!!

I'll probably never get to the dialysis portion of this kidney failure but when the RBC's drop a bit low this stuff triggers the kidneys to signal to the marrow that more red blood cells are needed.

Of course this is another drug that is abused---long distance bike racers inject it to raise the ability of their blood to carry more O2. Whoops---when overdose they die!

Ah, If you see my sig, I'm in kidney failure, and do dialysis 6 days a week.

Man you guys are worse off than me - this is the only medical issue I have had in over 20 years & its purely preventative at this stage - my ferritin has not quite raised enough yet to cause serious damage.

But it would have by the time I hit 50 it could have caused cancer etc.

Iron is actually very bad stuff in the body over a certain level.

Anyway I'm still not 100% certain it is what I have - everything is indicating this though and I'll know in a month.

              I actually feel great.

KimW I'm reading your blog and it sucks man - nobody wants that sh*t to happen

Okay - Sorry I joked about this Gareth - sounded like something that was going to be followed by a punchline.

    1. How did they actually "breed" that into people back before they knew anything about genes, etc?

    2. For Kim and Gordon - how do they say you contracted such an illness? Was it brought on by some pharmaceutical or other illness? D3 deficiency? Toxins of some sort? I know Advil and other fake aspirin pain killers cause kidney failure - but the other imbalances, I don't know about. Sure would like to know more about this. Going to your website, Kim...but would love to know if you two have a cause in common and anything I'm not going to find at your place Kim.

    Sal,
The best idea that I have been told that cause my kidney failure was uncontrolled high blood pressure.
The bad aspect of that is that I was very faithuful about going and getting a checkup annually and having all the tests done that we are told adults should have done. And I was always told everything was fine.
Which leads me to one conclusion,I had a bad physician. The problem is that I can't prove anything.

Other than that I don't know what to say caused it. It is doubtful it was anything like advil or the such because I would only take anything like that in extreme situations.
Mostly ,except for smoking, (which I have quite almost 3 years now) I did what we are told is healthy living,no drugs,no alchohol, eating right, etc etc.

Kim - I just read your site. It was the prednisone. HB is a very usual side effect.
It seems with all of the problems caused by that drug that the FDA would ban it completely. The number people being rendered permanently disabled from it is unbelievable and the FDA and the pharms both know it.

Did your doctor or pharmacist tell you the side effects of Prednisone before they gave it to you? Were you on anything else that your doctor or pharmacist Knew of? - Like antibiotics or even herbals? You have a lawsuit if they didn't. I read the label and they have copped out on it sufficiently that you can't charge for off-label usage.

The delirium was just the easy part of what that drug is doing to people.

My ex got tendonitis once and they gave that to him and after 1 day of it I went in and told the doctor to knock it off in no uncertain terms. My ex had known psychological problems and the doctor threw that stuff at him with no second thoughts. He was a big guy and it put him into violent hysterics over night. I thought that either Munch or I was going to have to hurt him to bring him under control at one point. I wanted to sue that stupid MD.

I'm so sorry to hear that you got hit with it. The FTC is busy worrying about if they can collect money from small business websites while the major players don't even need to print the truth about really problematic stuff. If they want truth inadvertising they should make them print on prednisone bottles: "Your are more likely than not to experience these side effects" and "Side effects can cause life threatening illnesses".
You won't see that one in print.....even though it's the truth. You might be able to catch into some Class action lawsuits on that one. There are a lot of people looking for one......not sure how many are actually in action at the time.

With me the kidney problems arose from cardiac medications I was/am and probably will take for long long time to come. Cardiac problems arose from viral infection of ventricular muscle (flu). Of course when I got "sick" I kept working 18 hour days 7 days per week and that did not do any good.

March of 2000 they told me I would need transplant within three years, so have beaten that little horror-scope. The amount of blood pumped by ventricle each heart beat is termed the "ejection fraction" (actually more detailed but will do for this). Normal is around 60-65%. Nine years ago I was at 19%. Was in chronic atrial fibrillation for over eight months before was controlled via cardio-version (ouch!).

As to prednisone...I was married to a lady who contracted Lupus. Her dosage of prednisone was out of sight---we bought by the pharmacists wholesale bottle. The prednisone killed her kidneys and she was scheduled for THIRD kidney transplant when cardiac failure took her.

Medication is fantastic stuff---when the side effects don't floor you worse than the disease!

Actually HeySal, if I could not laugh and find continued humor within this frail frame of humanity I exist in I probably would have given up long ago. Good thing? Since I cannot spend many hours in physical exertion I must find $$$ through IM and am much happier, although my butt hurts from the hours at desk/computer!

Gareth...did not mean to hijack this thread from original intent. I meant my first response post to be humorous.

Gareth, I too apologize for hijacking this thread.
With that said, two things that really bother me.....one, they cannot get my BP under control...I am currently taking 2 meds, I was taking three....got to where my BP was too low and I was bottoming out during dyalysis (average BP in the 60/40 range) to taking me off one of then and changing the dosage of another and currently my BP is in the 190/110 range, plus or minus 10.
The second thing that bothers me is that when and if I get a transplant that you have to take drugs daily for the rest of your life.
They are expensive and between insurance and government aid they are only covered 18 months after the transplant. And they are dangerous, for example I know one of the drugs is again prednisone. They have already seen that it causes psychosis in me, yet I have been told that they have no other drug to substitute for me if I get a transplant. Sort of a no win situation.

Gordon - I lost a friend to Lupus and now I wonder if it was the Lupus or if they had her on prednisone, too. Being that there are non-pharmaceutical means - and very strong ones that control swelling, its a travesty to humanity to allow it to be marketed.

If you have heart problems and were on drugs for it and they gave you prednisone, you DO have legal recourse. That warning is right on the label.

I'm glad you are able to joke about it - sometimes that makes you less likely to get tense about it - and that sort of tension can be very dangerous. I used to go into anaphylactic shock now and again from allergies -- one little tad of anxiety over it at the wrong time and I could have easily died from it. I learned to control panic and tension to control asthma attacks. Tension can bring those to killer proportions, too.

When I was young - from baby through high school - my parents were told not to expect me to survive. My life is thanks to my Mother and her Mother and who taught me to how be calm. My mom would rub my back when I got congested or take me for car rides in the country to to look at scenery and get fresh air, or sometimes even sit me in warm sunshine to "bake it out".

    My Grandmother always said:
Sometimes it's good not to have a roof, Sal. That way when the walls come tumbling down you don't get smooshed.
Meaning, of course, if you don't have a lot of security, you don't panic when something goes wrong and hurt yourself. Smart woman.

Kim have they considered giving you Imurin (sp?). It can cause problems too - but you already know that Prednisone isn't going to work for ya.

What you mean how did they breed it in ???

I was joking but thats how nature brings about genetic changes - apparently everybody with the c282y gene for hemochromatosis got it from a single ancestor from several thousand years ago.

If you can withstand blood loss it stands to reason your offspring would survive primitive warfare more than those that do not. Even when its a gene that is otherwise terminal.

Anyway they have to make me anemic for 1-2 months to use up the excess iron in my body - I feel a bit dopey & get puffed when running a little more than normal but otherwise I am unaware of any difference.

Iron stores in the liver, brain, everywhere & this sh*t causes everything from Alzheimer's and mental illness to cancer, stroke and heart attack.

But I am lucky I found out and put my foot down and demanded a trial.

It seems the govt here is misinforming the public on this issue to save money.

The toxicity is measured per unit of blood so should be the same for males & females - male organ tissue is no more resistant to poisoning than female and iron can not be removed from the body.

But they are disseminating false information that the male level is normal up to 400 for ferritin & female is normal up to 300.

Males & females have the same toxicity level which is 200. Anything above that and there is some poisoning going down.

Venesection is recommended at any level above 300. But I have had these people trying to discourage venesection and saying its only required at 1000 or more - at that level the poisoning is actually killing you not just reducing your health.

This is quite appalling and I complained to the ministry of health here in NZ.

Also a blood test from one lab will say you require treatment and a blood test from a different lab with the same numbers will say that you are "normal" and do not require treatment.

Totally absurd. Also there is a catch 22 as well because high tissue iron causes liver disease and liver disease elevates iron markers in the blood.

Fatty liver however elevates CRP also and mine is very low (healthy) - my liver ultrasound did not reveal anything either.

So thousands of people here in NZ are being poisoned by iron and this will cost many millions of dollars to treat the consequent diseases that are caused.

Same in most nations - but the drug companies make money treating symptoms - not eliminating the cause & many doctors are simply drug salesman.

PS: tonight i had my first steak in 2 months - i better cut it out untill my ferritin is around 100.

PPS: Dont blindly listen to doctors - half of them are assholes - read up and be aware.
