Forgive me if i'm totally wrong, but everyone on the internet is pronouncing niche as "nitch" when I always thought it was pronounced "neesh". The way i pronounce it seems to be the way its done when you search on google for the word and press the audio button to hear the correct way to say it.

I'm in Australia, perhaps its pronounced differently in the US.

Since it's French in origin, the correct pronunciation is neesh - rhymes with quiche and fiche which are also French words.

Tell that to every single leading dictionary.

Besides, your explanation only further supports pronouncing the word "nitch".

You're being disingenuous. Most dictionaries today are descriptive in function (rather than prescriptive). They order preference by usage. Ergo, pronunciation listed first is the preferred pronunciation.

Every dictionary I listed above shows a preference by order for "nitch", including in the order of the sound files.

The Brits, and their minors, the Australians, tend to favor progressive change in everything but the natural progression of the English language.

I'll take the word of the linguistics professionals at every leading dictionary over your opinion in this instance. I'll be certain to call you, however, if I ever need advice on wrestling a crocodile or seducing a kangaroo.

Got caught up on 'Shark Tank" by watching 5 episodes over the past few days. Almost all of the Sharks pronounced the word as 'neesh.' If it's good enough for Mr. Wonderful, it should be good enough for you.

Personally, I find it comical that there would be a discussion on how to properly pronounce a word, when there is only one way to properly pronounce the word.

I hear it as Neesh, but usually from someone who is positioning themselves as someone "in the know" or of high social class.

Like when they say Estate instead of home...or Grounds instead of yard.

I have a brother-in-law that is from California, and they own a college there. He says things like "Neesh".

One day he was telling us how he felt (he had a stomach ache I think)

He said, "I'm feeling a little...what's the word I'm looking for?"

      I said "Pompous?"

I always found pomposity and a feeling of self importance (not the same as self confidence) as funny. Even in myself.

What I thought was even funnier was that nobody laughed. Slaves to the social hierarchy.

          Plate?

Any word associated with food, and I get excited.

If you call me a Basket case...I think of a basket and how it's full of food.

i weigh 590 pounds. At this rate, I'll be obese in less than a decade.

You better be glad I have no idea what Cornucopia means...or you would be in BIG trouble, Mister!

I'll assume it means "Stable Genius".

Some of us eat that foul, salty substance, the rest prepare for the dropbear invasion.

Walk through the gumtree's and have one of those drunk, furry things land on your noggin, and you will be scarred for life, (and have a headache).

It is a terror only Australians can comprehend, but being drunk will bring you up to speed.
