Forgive me if i'm totally wrong, but everyone on the internet is pronouncing niche as "nitch" when I always thought it was pronounced "neesh". The way i pronounce it seems to be the way its done when you search on google for the word and press the audio button to hear the correct way to say it.

I'm in Australia, perhaps its pronounced differently in the US.

  • Oxford prefers "nitch"

    Dictionary.com prefers "nitch"

    ("Neesh" isn't an option.)

Google, which uses the Oxford Pocket Dictionary, prefers "nitch".

    Webster's prefers "nitch"
    https://www.merriam-webster.com/dict...earch-dict-hed
    (Introduces a third option, "nish".)

    Collins prefers "nitch"

    Vocabulary.com prefers "nitch"

    ("Neesh" not an option.)

I'm actually surprised that I didn't find at least one dictionary that preferred "neesh". While I use "nitch", I thought it would at least be a fight.

    • Since it's French in origin, the correct pronunciation is neesh - rhymes with quiche and fiche which are also French words.

Mon dieu, n'a plus rien de sacré?

    • Actually if you press the icons to have the word read out, they have no preference for either pronunciation. Which (whiche?) means that eyether/eether pronunciation is acceptable, and neyether/neether one of them is wrong.

It is understandable that Americastanians would have problems with French pronunciation though. You only need to look at the difficulty they have with English, let alone French.

In the US (east coast) it's pronounced nitch on Google definition/voice.

Try it in Swahili, it's pronounced armadillo.

  • Yep, it's "neech" everywhere in the world except good ol' USA. Are you surprised?
    (This should start something lol)
  • Hi Stuffz,

    Neesh is likely right.

I am from New Jersey; I say little properly with my bawls, dawgs and cawfees.

I just blew through the Gold Coast for a 45 minute layover this afternoon. Gorgeous. In Auckland now.

  • Got caught up on 'Shark Tank" by watching 5 episodes over the past few days. Almost all of the Sharks pronounced the word as 'neesh.' If it's good enough for Mr. Wonderful, it should be good enough for you.

Personally, I find it comical that there would be a discussion on how to properly pronounce a word, when there is only one way to properly pronounce the word.

    • I hear it as Neesh, but usually from someone who is positioning themselves as someone "in the know" or of high social class.

Like when they say Estate instead of home...or Grounds instead of yard.

I have a brother-in-law that is from California, and they own a college there. He says things like "Neesh".

One day he was telling us how he felt (he had a stomach ache I think)

He said, "I'm feeling a little...what's the word I'm looking for?"

      I said "Pompous?"

I always found pomposity and a feeling of self importance (not the same as self confidence) as funny. Even in myself.

What I thought was even funnier was that nobody laughed. Slaves to the social hierarchy.

  • OK. We get it. Australia has a superior educational system to the U.S.

Truth be told, so does Bangladesh, it seems.
  • I am surprized that this silly subject is still getting traction, l would expect by now that it would have been closed, deleted, sent into the pit of hell and cut up into bite sized pieces.

    No, wait Claude is posting,....chunks!

  • Proof that WF members can take any sort of idiocy and run with it straight to the LOL room....

Which is much nicer than suggesting that anyone who thinks this is a question to 'ponder' probably already has a job...at McDonald's....

    • Ouch guess it is time to put in the pink slip
  • This has come up a number of times on the WF over the years. The word relating to IM I find mispronounced the most is "template".

It isn't tem-plate as many people say, it's really pronounced tem-plit or tem-plet.

    • Kurt;

For years, I thought people in my town were calling me Ace. I later found out that this is just what the word Ass sounds like...when you have missing teeth.

      Ahhh childhood.

And the original German pronunciation of Riffle is "Awful".

    • In its original French its tom-plart-er.

  • You can call it whatever you want as long as you dominate that niche ..:-) just kidding..

Neesh is probably the best one but I reckon this little detail to be not so important as the IM is global now and there are successful internet marketers from many non-english speaking coutries that teach IM..
  • Of course it's pronounced nitch, to rhyme with clawed urea itch.

    • Do you know what rhymes with Kurt?

      Shut up, that's what.

I would fly anywhere in the country...just so I could be near you...ignoring you.

  • Yes, but Australians eat Vegemite, so it's tough to take things seriously.

    • Some of us eat that foul, salty substance, the rest prepare for the dropbear invasion.

Walk through the gumtree's and have one of those drunk, furry things land on your noggin, and you will be scarred for life, (and have a headache).

It is a terror only Australians can comprehend, but being drunk will bring you up to speed.
