My mum has a cockatoo which when not in her presence likes to chase me around the house, when he catches me he jumps and bites at my foot

I know he thinks he's just playing, he really has nothing against me

What should I do to stop this?

Don't be so sure he has nothing against you. My friends had a parrot and she was so sweet to them but she HATED me. Well, she hated most women. But she especially hated me because I would bird-sit when they went away for the weekend. They were gone for a week once and on the first day I let her out of her cage. She refused to go back in so I finally had to force her. She bit the hell out of my hand (I still have a scar) and we were mortal enemies from that point on. I hated that bitchy bird.

So, I don't know what to tell you to solve the problem but I can feel your pain.

    how old is the bird?

Is he wildcaught? or hand-raised. Was he abused by a prior owner? Is he recently separated from a loving owner? these factors greatly affect cockatoo behavior. Cockatoos mate once and for life and form strong inter-species bonds ( humans, other bird species, dogs, etc. ) In general, cockatoos are VERY jealous. He may see you as a "rival" to his "mate"----your mom. He needs to see you as a part of the clutch.

Spray him with a spray bottle. Shout "NO! ---Name of Bird---" Then have his favorite treet---like a slice of apple or sunflower seeds --most cockatoos go crazy over sunflower seeds! You will make a friend with food. When he comes over, say "Good ----Name of Bird---"

NEVER HIT THE BIRD!!!! Thumps on the beak are acceptable---just not too hard it's a sensitive area. Use your voice and a water bottle. Always reward the bird when he does something good and use his favorite foods as a "treat" for good behavior.

Keep the bird in the cage when your mom is not around.
