I hope that's the case and that this little kid has not fallen out of the thing.

Reminds me of the joke where the kid answers the phone and whispers that his parents can't come to the phone because the cops are there. When the caller asks what the cops are doing there he whispers "looking for me".

That was a cool balloon, wasn't it? Sounds to me like the kid unhitched it -and I bet his brothers knew that, too. Somebody's in trouble...

      Hopefully nothing.

The kid was only six. That is a little young to be at the age of reason.

On the other hand, if the parents were somehow in on it, or it was planned in any way, then they should pay for it. But I don't think it was a stunt.

It was a little boy who maybe didn't even realize what would happen if he untied it. Or maybe he thought "Cool! I want that balloon." and then it got away from him.

I assume by now that most have seen the Wolf Blitzer interview w/ this family?
When the boy was asked why he didn't come up when his parents called for him, he replied "You guys said...we did this for a show."

Of course, the Dad just stammered and hee-hawed after that because he knew he was busted.

Wolf questioned him a bit, but gets an epic fail for not going in for the kill after this.

When the boy was asked why he didn't come up when his parents called for him, he replied "You guys said...we did this for a show."
I watched most of that interview and the one on another station and what I heard the child say was that he had gotten in trouble earlier in the day and his Dad yelled at him and that's why he hid.

They were in the process of testing the balloon and the wife had tethered it before it was filled and charged - it was supposed to rise only about 20 feet. Husband seems to think wife didn't tether it correctly.

I heard nothing said about any other reason - finally had to change the channel because Wolf gets annoying after a while.

I've always thought the people who climb a mountain and get stuck or go rock climbing and have to be rescued - should pay for their own rescue. I've heard of it happening but don't know if it's common or not.

Listening to the family's answers in a long interview it was clear to me this is another case of "instant" news where many of the facts reported simply weren't true.

I just thought the balloon was cool - man, that sucker could move.

But there is no way they can TRULY pay everyone back. HECK, people might have DIED because of a lack of resources.

When I saw the ballon, I THOUGHT it looked self contained(no place to put a person), and too small to carry any appreciable weight. Two people claiming to know a lot about the subject called a talkshow and SAID that also! ALSO, the father supposedly said HE created this with the intent to have it for commuters? He was NOT the first to build that type of ballon, and this was probably STANDARD OFF THE RACK, so to speak. It has been tried, and most people wouldn't be comfortable. One more very important thing.... HOW do you steer it? What about propulsion? If it were ME, that would be the FIRST thing I would do!

Frankly, if they ARE guilty,I think they should have to pay all the money back that they earned from their TV stints, have their wages garnished, their kids taken away, and be thrown in jail for, among other things....

        Filing a false police report
        obstruction of justice
contributing to the delinquencies of minors
        fraud
Misuse of public resources(I forget what the legal name is)

That could probably be a few years. And the money could be distributed among the states to help with infrastructure, etc... I figure the news programs, talk shows, and reality shows, got THEIR moneys worth.

I mean COME ON! And during a DEPRESSION!!?!?!? And even a WELL MEANING MISTAKE from a company turning in a false alarm to the fire department can really cost! The ambulance cost me almost $800! So why should THEY get off for free?

I can understand the kid getting references mixed up, but that doesn't explain the fathers first reaction. ALSO, WHY did they kid throw up TWICE? That sounds suspicious.

I did a quick calculation on the amount of air it could displace in pounds and it appears that balloon could carry less than 50 pounds total weight at sea level (balloon + cargo).

The dad would have been fully aware of the balloons' capacity.

          I smell something fishy...

They showed the actual footage of the balloon escaping from the backyard. Both parents were right there, and there was no additional box attached to the balloon.

I watched an interview this morning and the dad got very uneasy when questioned if the whole thing was staged. I also happened to catch the episode of wife swap they were on, never watch it otherwise, but I am interested in storm chasing so i watched it for that reason.

The guy is a very controlling and manipulative type of personality, treats his wife like crap and has a very short fuse.

That coupled with what the little kid said to Wolf Blitzer leads me to believe that the whole thing was staged.

Either way, just glad to see the little boy is fine.

I was reading that the boy got sick -- twice -- when asked about his comment, "we did this for a show."

During a live interview with CNN, Falcon said he had heard his family calling his name.

    "You did?" his mother asked.

"Why didn't you come out?" Richard Heene said.

Falcon answered, "You had said that we did this for a show."

That was on TV, too - exactly that calculation - and the kid weighs less than that.

Some in this thread are making judgments that make no sense to me. What's been coming out today is that many of the details given during the "live coverage of the event"...were not correct.

Yes, the kid made a strange comment but how many hours can he be interviewed before he starts making up the story for more attention?

The kid's story today is that he was yelled at for "messing with" the tie ropes on the balloon when the family was getting ready to test the balloon. When it took off and wasn't tethered (even though the Mother had tied it) he ran to his hidey hole and stayed there.

No one who was around the family during the time the kid was missing thinks there was anything fishy at all. The father clearly was upset when the balloon took off and the tethers didn't hold.

Knowing little boys, I think he did mess with the tie-downs after Mom secured them - and he knew he was in trouble - and he hid.

If he were my kid, he'd be grounded until he was 21. I think the parents need to announce "no more interviews" to reporters.

        Kay,

You would think the news media would figure that out about a six year old boy. They act like he's on a speaking tour.

When I watch the story (which isn't a lot) I pay more attention to what the dad does and says. And something strikes me as a little off kilter on some of his responses.

Only time will tell if it was a stunt gone wrong, or if it was just happenstance.

One thing for sure, though...the more those media fools keep grilling the boy the stranger the story is going to get.

I thought it was suspicious when the kid said that, but when I thought about it more, they were video taping at the time the balloon got away, so he could have been talking about that. Also if you've seen video of this guy on the wife swap show (or whatever it's called) then you know that this guy is a maniac with a bad temper. I'd probably hide from him as well if I were this kid.

OK, I've seen enough. If I were king, I would DEFINITELY THROW THE BOOK AT THEM, or at least the father, and token charges to the others. One person even mentioned the FAA. GOOD POINT! Balloons can be DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!!!!

I was once in a boarding school. I woke up early one morning, about 3 or 4 in the morning, and there was a BUZZING!!!!!! The sky lit up BLUE!!!! And this was at NIGHT! It was like an alien invasion! WHAT happened? A mylar BALLOON landed on power lines, and caused a gas explosion! I'm SERIOUS!

And what of birds? Dolphins/whales? PLANES? That is TOO high a cost to TOO many people for some JERK to get more fame. He needs to rot in jail a bit.

It's an odd case. Got a lawman covering all the new shows with one appearance after another....people threatening to take the children from the parents....and no charges filed as yet.

Looks like Dad isn't the only one looking for publicity.

I have to wonder at the mentality of people who always scream "take the children away" - do they stop to think where children go when taken from parents? If we took children from parents who were stupid we'd have to build a lot of orphanages.

It seems everyone has decided on this guy's guilt - without any charges filed or any proof presented except hearsay.

In Colorado, people who get themselves in a bind climbing or skiing and have to be rescued are NOT charged for the rescue efforts. So to try to get money from this guy they are going to have to find him guilty of something greater than stupidity.

          Kay,

I think the big difference here is that the chances are very good the dad knew full well the kid was not in the balloon and proceeded to let the rescue resources be wasted on a hoax.

I can tell you right off the bat that the speed at which the balloon climbed would have been impossible given the additional weight of the child. The dad knew this as well.

You want to punish kids for obeying their daddy's? WTF are you thinking? The kid will be traumatized enough after the court BS and seeing daddy get in trouble........so let's punish him some more. We should just put all kids that obey mommy and daddy when they are being stupid in concentration camps ...that'll teach em. Hell with the old fashioned stupidity that ADULTS are the ones who should know better. Every 6 year old should be able to tell mommy and daddy that "what you are doing is inethical and I will have no part in it"

I saw on one of the rag shows that the compartment was made from duct tape and that the dad knew full well it would never support the weight of a child.

Another source was reporting that one of the news outlets or perhaps a potential reality TV show may have been involved in the hoax.

If that's the case, then he's looking at conspiracy charges and could be in a world of hurt.

One outlet reported that the guy that was working with him said he was obsessed with the world coming to an end in 20012 and he wanted a big payday from a TV show to help fund an under ground bunker.

Not always true, Kay. When I lived out there we had a party of flatland condo trolls that took off into 13.5 thousand foot mountains with a blizzard heading in and avalanche warnings -- you better believe they got charged. On the other hand if you went out when you could be reasonably assured that the weather was holding and something happened, they usually didn't charge.

Never lived in Colorado - that info was in an interview with a police commissioner type there somewhere.

I agree the whole thing stinks - the "cubbyhole" on the balloon (now that we've seen a closeup" looks like duct tape and cardboard.

I can see this guy worried about 2012 - he's a bit out there. Just think the officials are making fools of themselves. We've seen it before with high profile cases (remember the team of kids charged with gang rape?) where the prosecutors and police got overly fond of making pronouncements for TV cameras....and then found they had no case.

I think for any citizen - if officials are going to discuss their "crimes" on TV you might be wise to wait until you have charged them with something.

      This is a good question.

A 6 year old can't be held responsible for doing what daddy says. In fact, up until a certain age in many states, the PARENT is held responsible when the KIDS break the law (not all laws, obviously - but things like vandalism, the parents pay).

Looks like the wife cracked right away in this case:

"The wife of a Colorado father at the center of the "balloon boy" saga told authorities that the giant helium balloon was specifically created for a hoax to draw media attention, according to court documents released Friday.

Mayumi Heene told Larimer County investigators that she and her husband, Richard Heene, knew that their 6-year-old son Falcon was hiding at their Fort Collins home the entire time, even as police and military scrambled to search for the boy, according to the documents.

The admission by Mayumi Heene was made October 17, just two days after the balloon was released, according to the documents."

Me can't get no reality show. Me make balloon and make army guys look for boy.

    DUH!

The saddest thing is that he WILL get EXACTLY what he wants. You KNOW some network will pick this up as a reality show.

    Even sadder?

    It will be a hit.

Frank Kern has nothing on this guy!

This was the most successful launch of 09'

Sure he may spend a little time in the slammer, but I doubt it.

A few months from now he will have offers coming out the wazoo.

As much as it turned our stomachs once we discovered the truth, there are tons of folks out there with nothing better to do than to set aside an hour a week to see what the whack job will do next.

I for one, won't be one of them

Ya know what's really freakin' sick is that the droolers that would actually sit and watch something like that actually get the same count you do in a voting booth. Now that's really stranger than fiction.

Who is worse these people or the Octo Mom?
I guess I would say the Octo Mom hands down, but I'm sure there is an argument for the balloon family!

Personally, I'm up in the air about the chances of this bozo even landing a pilot episode. He's nothing more than a bag of hot air as far I can see.

I know these TV execs will go anywhere the wind blows, but this guy is a basket case. Sure, he has an inflated ego, but I don't think giving him more air time will fly. There would just be too many strings attached to launch a show featuring this windbag, and I don't imagine many advertisers getting onboard.

Hopefully they won't be propelled to any kind of stardom. I have a feeling the kids are on the bad end of the parents' turbulent relationship, must be a drag. Who knows how long they can keep the marriage aloft.

Well, the only other pun I could think of involved the word 'cockpit' but it's probably better if I just jet - I have to get up at 7:47

      BOTH are just as bad.

And OCTOMOM did this JUST to have the attention, or because she simply WANTED too. Having ONE kid is bad enough, but EIGHT!?!?!? And she already had SIX!?!?!? HOW could the kids be brought up? HOW can they be provided for?

And that jerk FATHER with falcon did this JUST to have the attention. He is INTENTIONALLY doing what octomom has to do.... Exploit the kids.

In BOTH cases, the kids will end up being a drain on society. Annd imagine octomoms kids! They may want to beat "moms" record!

It'll be interesting to see if they set bail when they arrest him...

We already know he's a flight risk
