Couple Denied Marriage Certificate Because They Are Not The Same Race! In 2009! In the US!

This is hard to believe. This judge won't sign marriage certificates for interracial marriages because he thinks any kids resulting from the marriage will suffer. He somehow claims "I try to treat everyone equally" and of course the expected 'I am not a racist' claim. He even has blacks get married in his house, so of course he isn't a racist. What a bunch of crap.

Interracial couple denied marriage license - Race & ethnicity- msnbc.com

It wasn't that long ago when we had laws that forbid interracial marriages in this country. It's too bad there's some who still want to live in the past in what they see as the good ole days.

    What a bunch of bull.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets removed from his position for this. I don't know exactly what the couple can do, but my relative who works in law said there is stuff they can do.

Interracial kids are usually the hottest kids around (I can say this, I am 18!) you want to see a gorgeous girl, check out one whose mom is black and dad is white (or opposite) they always have THE PERFECT tan. Seriously.

Plus their facial structure always works out well.

Heck I know a half Polynesian girl, she is beyond gorgeous. (OK so I date around a bit in college, sue me )

    Anyway, back to work!

A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
I think that explains it Tim
He would of had issues with at least 3 of my x girlfriends that I can remember.
I'd like to see a justice refuse a license because both people where idiots and they might reproduce.

Yeah that's right, throw down on the whole state of Louisiana and Tangipahoa Parish. Yes, I see the smiley. That doesn't excuse you. Not one bit.

          Agreed, John.

I know Thom meant it in jest, but still. Racism isn't only found in Louisiana, or the Deep South, or Texas, or Canada, or wherever. If that justice moves it's not likely that his views will change just because his geographical setting has.

          There are idiots everywhere.

          A little touchy aren't we?
Yea it was a joke, and if I didn't live in a state that I thought was worse then La. then I wouldn't of made it.

Sounds a bit like shooting the messenger to me.

If you don't think that the GOB network in the south is more racist than any other place in the country (world?), you have your head in the sand.

I was unfortunate enough to live in Arkansas a few years back...you know they still have 'whites only' clubs there? Yes...they do.

Monticello, Arkansas. In a dry county. No booze sold. But of course, there were 2 private 'membership' clubs that were allowed to sell. Neither of them allowed blacks, mexicans, or even Jewish poeple. Exclusive clubs for the white man GOB politicians, councilmen, and the (very) few white guys in Monticello who actually had money.

And no, this wasn't a long time ago. This was 3 years ago.

You think that kind of thing would fly out west? Or even the northeast?

Frankly, MOST that are mixed black/white end up looking more black than white with a great tan. The facial structure isn't that definit either.

I have some cousins that are eurasian. THEY made me sorry I was related. If she were a bit younger, I would be ecstatic to marry my older cousin. 8-) But, we are related, and she is older. 8-(

And I DO like Hoku Ho. Wikipedia says.... She is of European, Polynesian and Asian American ancestry: Chinese, Hawaiian, Portuguese, Dutch and German descent on her father's side and Hawaiian, Caucasian and Filipino American descent on her mother's side.
      Talk about MIXED!

BTW It is generally against the law to not allow this at all, whether loans, housing, marriage, education, etc....

HECK, louisiana is SO mixed already! Have you ever seen mardigras, or heard about creoles!?

    First, he's not a judge.

Second, his position is idiotic and he should be removed from his position immediately.

His line about "treating everybody equally" appears to refer to not issuing a marriage license to ant interracial couples.

Not that it matters, but they CAN still get married. They just need someone else to sign the paperwork.

Unbelievable that there are still people out there that feel that way. Also notice how he tries to blame the non-whites for being the problem.

One other minor point. Where you say "it wasn't all that long ago" is a bit misleading. Any laws against interracial marriage were basically struck down in 1963. I would say we've come a long way in 46 years.

    All the best,

I agree with you Mike, that just reminded me of this true and funny story.
In 1968 I was 15. I was dating this girl Lynette who happened to be black.
I had been beaten up a couple of times for dating a black and we where often harassed, but didn't care (this was in upstate New York by the way). We got along great and where best friends.
Her father who owned his own business and was pretty wealthy made her break up with me and refused to let her see me because it looked bad her dating a poor boy.
He didn't have a problem with my color, just my families $.

When my brother was at Ft. Polk(?), LA he was dating a Cajun girl. And when she took him home to meet mom and dad, her dad was not very kind. To put it mildly.

I know you well enough to know that you meant no harm by your statement. The way I see it, though, is that you're just trading one stereotype for another.

Ultimately, it IS a FACT that this particular justice of the peace IS from Louisiana - and that's going to feed the stereotypes some groups have of people from the South.

Mike if the Justice had been in Brunswick, New York which is where I am now I would of said the same thing.
Believe it or not, I'm probably one of the most non raciest non stereotyping(?) person you will meet. I simply don't think about race or stereo types when I am talking about a person or place nor when I meet someone or go to a new place.
I take almost everything at face value.
I also don't worry about how I come across to people.
They either get me or they don't.

I forgot to add as far as my story about Lynette.
What made me think of her and that story was the date 1965.
Thinking back I thought of her seeing how she is one of my fondest memories from that decade.
Never thought of the trading stereotype angle, I was just recalling a fond memory that I thought had a funny twist.

If it weren't for racism, there would be no diversity.

Everybody would be screwing everybody else until we were all the same colour.

You pays your money and you takes your choice. I don't see any rational reason why one is better than the other.

I have been all over this country and most of Canada. Some of the worst racism I experienced was in NY and MA.

Yeah, maybe I am a bit touchy. I was born in La, most of my family lives there and we are not racists, yet we are now lumped in with this idiot from Hammond. I wonder how many here have even been to La? The people there are some of the best people you will find in this country regardless of color. In fact, our esteemed fearless leader is from La.

When people make statements like the one made in this thread it really shows your lack of intelligence. It doesn't matter if it was done in jest or not. Would it be funny to make a joke about a person of another race on this forum? Would it be tolerated? I highly doubt it. So, why would the comment made above be tolerated?

You need to grow up and learn some common sense.

You need to follow your own advice.
You turned my comment into a racist comment not me.
You are also the one lumping you and your family in with that idiot.
That's the last I got to say about it.
Talking to over sensitive types isn't worth the effort.

I just saw this on Yahoo News! Geez, I thought nobody does this anymore and his reasons are bogus; there's a white couple in my church who have adopted two black boys and they haven't gotten any flack over it to my knowledge. Will not be surprised to hear that this guy "resigns" over this.

I have a good one for you all. I think it was about 04, and a
coworker went on an elk hunting trip to Colorado. One of those
    guided hunting affairs.

My friend and former coworker, I'm no longer working there, told
me the saloon/bar/tavern in this very small town had a sign next
to the entrance: No Indians Allowed. LOL.

    Cool, huh?
