I'll start it out with one of my all-time favorites that never really got the air time it deserved.

    No question in my mind:

This song is the entire reason I play guitar.

"The Golden Town is the Golden Town no longer. They have sold their pillars for brass and their temples for money, they have made coins out of their golden doors. It is become a dark town full of trouble, there is no ease in its streets, beauty has left it and the old songs are gone." - Lord Dunsany, The Messengers

Here's a song from a band you won't hear much about unless you're from around Philly:

Oh yeah and here's a group you won't hear much about unless you're from around Pittsburgh:

YouTube - Rusted Root ~ Back to the Earth
I saw Rusted Root at S.P.A.C. when they did the Horde Tour.
I loved them, the wife hated them, go figure.
I still listen to their first CD a lot.

This well known song is very underrated I think.
First it was the definition of "world music" before the genre existed.
Second it features Youssou D'Nour an incredible African artist.
      Third the visuals.
Fourth the percussion. The interplay between the different percussion instruments is incredible.
Fifth, well that's personal but I will say the song brings tears of sorrow then joy to my eyes every time I hear it.

        Thom,
Thaks for bringing Peter Gabriel into the mix. I really don't see how we ahve psoted so much and left him out.

They enjoyed some commercial success; one of their songs "Send Me on My Way" was in the movie "Ice Age" soundtrack. They also had made it as a music video and it was put into rotation on MTV.

Their song "Virtual Reality" was in the "Twister" movie soundtrack.

One of these may be where you heard of them.

They make good uplifting music. Unfortunately, they're very underrated.

I really love this - never heard it or heard of this group until decades later. Still just as good today. Discovered in the WF OT Music Room... (thanks John Rogers)

Two from Mancini...Both of these are very well known, but I don't think either get the credit for how cool they are from a purely musical point of view. They are both great songs in their own right:

      Kurt,
I think those might be considered well known among the older generation, but I bet the younger ones wouldn't have a clue about Baby Elephant Walk.
They might know Pink Panther because Steve Martin remade them.As funny as Martin is, no one beats Peter Sellers.
