Those With Day Jobs: How Do You Choose the right job for you?

Hi guys this message is for those with 9-5 like me.

i want a new job but I made the mistake of applying to every single job that I thought sounded cool and now I'm in the dilemma of getting to final stage for 3 jobs and having 1 job offer but i'm only 70% keen on.

job:

1 - small start up only 5 ppl main office is abroad so they have a bigger than usual budget. would do a variety of job more 'agency' style campaigns like poster on public transport, tshirts, pop up advertising stops, sounds very fun i really want it and ive done a interview and then a test brief and made it to final round of skype interview with head office in 2 days.. this is the one i want the most but i might not get it. this place seemed needed more conceptual strategic design skills. The culture is obviously only 5 ppl so a tiny knit family they seemed really ethical and good at their jobs but introverted and care about what they do.

2 - 50 ppl tech start up for ai technology web design services for small businesses. i would do a variety of work from marketing to product design wireframing etc. they found that i lacked UX experience so offered me a job £7,000 BELOW my asking salary but agreed to send me on a £3,000 course in . the skill i lack and a promise of 'salary negotiation' after a probationary period. this place seems quite skill and stats powered and everyone is very techy and its slightly testosterone-fuelled. i know i would learn a lot here butthey are still experimental with all the tools htey use and processes.

3- 30 ppl tech gaming video app advertising start up. main office in USA but the creative studio is in UK and would be doing story boarding conceptual ideas for video advertising for games for other companies like King etc. the culture here is amazing everynoe is young (my age) into similar things. it's a perkoholic kind of place with free lunches and cool offices and casual environment. office dogs and fun teambuilding activities. i told them i had a job offer and they said they want to speed up the proccess... but its still a bit slower than the other 2. this place seems VERY similar to what i currently do now but in a diff sector. but the environment is the type of environment i would prefer but hte job role is less what i want to do.

I would need to reply to 2.... in 2 days after my final stage skye call with job 1.. do I accept job 2 and just see how the others pan out? Is this bad practise? What would you do? I dont know which one is the best as theyre all completely different job roles and i like drips and drabs from each job :/

I was wondering How do you choose the right job for you?

Entrepreneurs now Ruilk but I chose my last job based on the free time it gave me.

Here's why; I felt I would move in a way different direction eventually and wanted something to cover bills, and also, to give me free time for studying trading, which I loved doing at the time.

But these days I'd advise to work your passion. Get paid for having fun.

I can't really give you advice .. but it sounds or reads like the third one is more a fite for you accepr for the job ..now where it is a start up.. is there a chance that if it grows the job you want may be needed..

where it is a start up.. maybe you can redsine the role .. or do the basic role and branh into roles you want ..

heck i don't know i can't work for any company to long ..so i won't really give anyone advice on thing that will effect their life every day ..yeah yeah i may seem to do that .. but when it comes to pointing at a job someone should take ..

the third seems more like home to you but are you looking for a new job for a new environment .. not just an new role

      Thanks guys!! For your responses!

You are right Odahh it sounds like home.
I just got a call from 3 I managed to get an offer from them which I'm accepting. I told them about 2's job offer so they made me a quick counter one. So grateful!!! To me a job is a job as long because as I'm making money for others I just use it to leverage my own personal skillset and confidence in the professional world. I am a total perkaholic plus they offered the salary I wanted. I do love design so yeh this is kind of what I like doing except I get paid for it super excited!!!! Would definitely love to be freelance/self employed like you guys so you guys are my inspiration for now

      Thanks xxx

not to be picky .. but even in your own business you would be making money for many other people ..

it much better to be somewhere where people are getting rich off what you do.. than in companies where no one you talk to is getting rich from what you do ..

I'm a gamer but most games anoy me because the free to plays have become greedy..

oh and grats on the job.. haha what type of games are the designing

I've spoken to my colleague who I think might be the right fit for the job he's already expressed his interest so I'm going to put him forward for the role!

Thanks, great idea! I went. online and found a set of questions to ask myself and wrote it in a google docs. Then I compared the perks, salary and work culture. I tried to do a 10 bullet point list but only got so far as to 5 points then the other 5 felt super orced like I had to think real hard what I wanted! This is what I came up with after a lot of thinking I don't know what it is for you guys:
          1. Casual fun collaborative work culture
          2. Good pay
          3. The push to upskill and contribute to employees learning and growth within company
          4. Perks like gym membership, free lunch
          5. No micromanaging. Manage yourself - freedom
          6. Working with smart talented people who can teach you things
          7. Relaxed environment. So turn up late.. You leave late no one to "tell you off"
          8. Job is not monotonous . It's autonomous
          9. People at work talk to eachother it's social
          10. I want to work with positive people who like their job

If you found a job doing what you enjoy - and they pay you what you wanted...believe it or not, that's easier than freelancing! There's a lot to be said for regular hours....

also there is allot more opportunity to get wealthy from a job is you are comfortable working at start ups and have skills needed in growing businesses .. microsoft minted like 10,000 millionaires or some high number ..

or if you have in demand skills where you can drop out.. free lance and travel for a while .. then drop back into a real job for a while ..

the people with the highest rate of success in their own businesses or as free lancers .. usually gain the skills in a job and start moonlighting until they are making enough to leave their jobs.. then many after a time ..don't really fail.. they just turn around and get jobs again .. because the isolation of the entrepreneur lifestyle is not for everyone..

and to add on .. the cost of createing a game online that can make money is dropping fast .. even 20 years ago .. it was millions or 10s of millions to put the games Asheron's call or ever quest out .. and World of warcraft may make a huge amount of money still but a lot goes back into development .. but in the games built on microtransactions .. that manage to make a lot of money .. they can be started on a lower budget with less than state of the are graphics and a smaller player base ..

plenty of opportunity to start ones own game company .. once someone has a feel on how things work

That's nice to hear that a lot of entrepreneurs start out working for others to gain skillset! It's very motivating. I know what you mean by shadowing how small businesses work you can emulate this and take note on what works well/doesn't and how they are run.

League of legends is the worlds most popular and most played game and it's free. Its derived from one of World of warcrafts mode. WoW is a paid subscription and LoL is free the graphics are bad but it makes more $$$. People purchase in-game items that mean NOTHING. They spend thousands. Its a multi-billion dollar business and Riot is one of the highest rated Company to work at in the US. (top 10) even though essentially it's the same game you play over and over again.

let me smack you around on the ..spending money on items that mean nothing comment ..the amount of money people are willing to spend in these games ..makes those items mean a lot at the time people buy them ..i am sorry .. weather it is just to make the character look a lot cooler or prettier .. or give a slight stat advantage.. or put someone in the top rank of a server ....

now i have been in the top on several games and played with the best on servers .. and run the best guilds with the people who were spending the most money ..and seen people drop over a gran in a week ..bor the best new thing .. or the new mount that that looked cool and made them more powerfull ..

if you are a designer ..and you are designing the stuff people pay money for or will but 100$ worth of boxes to try to get .. the wings the mounts .. the cloths.. or whatever those items are in a game ..

figure out why people will spend a lot of money in games for items you think are meaningless ..(now) .. and learn to design the stuffin games people will spend money for .. then you have a skillset you can start a business around.. without treating your players like they are suckers ..for spending money in your games ..

which a lot of games do and they make the games hard to enjoy wihout spending a lot of money ..

sorry to rant at you .. but .. gamers spend hours every day on a game or most of the day at times.. so those items do mean something now.. even if they turn around and leave the game a week later after spend a few hundred dollars ..or more ..

          which people do

learn how to please them and a good number of people who can't spend money.. and you can build a hundred million dollar a year game

I see what you mean. It's kind of like how people are willing to pay for Netflix.. the ROI is entertainment which equates to their happiness so its worth while. The same could be said for the in-game purchases... but it is subjective. There are people like you but there are also people like me. Who was an avid league player (completely addicted 16hour shifts I did per day) and has never purchased in-game items despite being on League for about 3-4 years. I just earned RP through playing a lot and bought stuff slowly as I went along - for free lmao. People like you are willingly handing over money to increase stats etc then there's a reluctant freeloader, frugal e-tramps like me who won't pay a dime if I have to. I think the difficulty is getting someone like me to spend money in games because we are the ones who are spending hours in gameplay for the fun because it's free refusing to part with our hard earned cash.

            Habbo hotel is another example!!

But yes I should really find out what gets people paying in-games. I work for an online gaming/gambling company that has loads of these slots games. People are honestly 80% more likely to lose yet they're addicted and still play all the games o.o I read this article online how technology is hi-jacking our minds which was interesting:
            https://medium.com/thrive-global/how...t-56d62ef5edf3

And it talks about turning your app into a 'slot machine' and giving intermittent rewards to maximise addiction. It's a fascinating read that you should read too then we can discuss more about it!

I can respond without quoting ..

I am 40 ..i remeber haveing to go to arcade and spend 20 dollars in qurter in a few hours to play games.. or when i got the play station 1 22 yw=ears ago to play final fantasy seven.. plunking down 150 for the console and 40 -60 bucks for a game every several weeks ..

then $2,000 for a new computer every 2 years 30$ a month for a dedicated land ling 20 dollars a month for internet service and 10-15 dollars a month or more for each online game to play ..

so if i am going to play a game for 20-30 hours a week.. and usually at the most drop 50 dollars a week.. that is less than 2 dollars per hour of entertainment..and most of the time that money results in permant improvement to the play or acceleration in advancement..and saving in play time ..

now i can't play games as much anymore..as staring at a screen to long ..or the screen while playing a game.. causes my depression to get worse or just bad mental side effects .. so any time i can use the funds from working an hour in the real world to save 20-25 hours of grin in a game and still enjoy playing the game .. at a competitive level

as far a slots go .. and that kind of online gaming gambling ..this might be a horrible suggestion to put on a forum ..but currently accept for some achievements ..it be interesting if by playing a lot and putting real money in to buy more play credits .. it would would be interesting to develop an attractive avatar that is next to the area of play that respond positively when people win ..or more excitedly when they win bigger .. jumping up and down with bouncing boob mechanics ..the plays can use avata credit to personalize the avatar ..

i say some of the on the machines in the casinos in las Vegas

This is great you've totally given me a 'persona' profile xD

I like your idea of the avatar but the bouncing boob idea is sexist as it objectifies women using our form merely as entertainment/engagement. We are more than our bodies.

As with the whole paying to play. I now see your point it's just like any other medium, outlet, entertainment we all invest hundreds of pounds in. It's whatever makes us happy right?

the bouncy mechanics was an example not a must....and i half knew you may be against that part of the idea.. but if you give the customers the ability to customise the appearance of the avatars ..depending on how much they are willing to spend ..on each feature ..now there are definite legal restrictions ..

in any case why do we have money in the first place ..and in the success community people actually spending money to enjoy their lives or have fun..is made out to be a travesty and waste of time and money ..

I think capitalism was put in place to keep order otherwise the world would be hectic.
If there was no driving force for wealth I don't know if half of the inventions, services we have today would even exist. It paves a way for innovation giving anyone and everyone a chance to make something out of nothing and spoils us with luxury of choice. Its obviously bad at the same time look at us success hungry monsters

On a good note, I signed the contract and handed my notice in today! I was so scared I waited until the end of the day to do it. w0h0h0h0000

i awkwardly tried to haggle my salary and refused to sign the contract then they got the head of department to call me and i caved because i got scared they were going to retract the offer. has anyone haggled salary and won before?? i don't know how to be assertive?? I read online men do this and a lot of them get higher paychecks which partially may contribute to the pay gap between men and women. it didnt work for me unfortunately lol. I'm still happy with the package though

I'm so excited for a new job new start, new people, environment and things to learn YAY one month to go until i start!!!

    Super chuffeddd xxxx

nothing wrong with us success hungry monsters ..as the best way to gain success in market system that functions at a healthy level .. is to make products that improve the lives of those who are low down on the rungs of success ..

it get unhealthy and dangerous though when the acumulation of wealth becomes the highest moral virtue in a society ..and it becomes ok to make it harder for those who are near the bottum to afford even the basics of life food ,shelter, education ,and medical care .. and large numbers of people get stuck at the bottom and have the paths up start to get blocked and taken away ..by those who already have more than enough ..

but going to deep in that subject gets political ..

facebook , google , youtube , amazon .. companies making smart phone poor people can afford .. make the lives of poor people around the world.. better ..people investing in real estate and driving up prices of owning a home and renting apartments .. to the point people can afford to live where they have the skills to work ...on the other hand ..( i picked a negative example that i think london is suffering from ..where it became a hot spot for international real estate investors )

oh yeah ,, so here lies the question .. since we have been talking about video games and online gambling type games ..

are you a good capitalist or a bad capitalist .. no one has to play a video game or sit in fron of a slor=t machine .. nor do they have to spend money in a game .. and the numbers i put out earlier in the thread.. you can put 30-60 hours of free/ entertainment time in to a game for far less personal final outlay than going to two 2 hour movies in a day ..and less than a night out drinkings.. ..so on and so forth..

now some times companies cross the line

well consider the much worse things people can do if they have 26,000 pounds or close to 34,000 usd a month they can lose .. and probably losing more on other sights when capped at the one you work for ..

most people are addicted to something .. I was in Las Vegas for a year and a half .. and saw a whole list of vices people could spend a bunch of cash on .. it's hard if you want to make a large amount of money to find anything that in somewhat can't be classified as immoral ..

you would probably have to ask those actually spending hat kind of money why they do .. and if you can get them to tell you who they make that kind of money to blow it ... let us know .. haha ..my roomate in Vegas was a former stripper who used to make and average of 1000 dollars a day .now she was very manipulative ..and talked about how she made that without ever having ..do more than tease a guy out of hundreds of dollars ... men who where willing to come back to the club on a regular basis ..

now i don't get why other men spend that kind of money to get turned on ..and pointed elsere .. ahem .. but..i got in one club in vegas for free .. and the vip room was like 1,000 an hour .. i was trying to learn to promet these clubs and you can get 50 a person getting them in the door.. i didn't have the personality for that kind of promotion.. basic because i don't personally like strip clubs ..

but money in the pocket is bound to get sucked out somehow ..

now to ask a personal question was the immoral feeling the job gave you behind the desire to freelance or work for yourself .. so you buy products that feed the dream.. to get away from how the way you earn money makes you feel..

you can confirm deny or ignore..

now i talk to guys every day who collect can to resyle to make money ..who save money by not running their air conditioner .. living in a desert.. but a couple times a month go to the casino and drop a couple hundred dollars trying to get that big win on the slot machine.. and tell the stories of when they see others win in a few minutes at a machine ..

so it's all in the dream or that fantasy that may happen next time and you may never want to happen..because then what will you dream about
