HOW HAS THE INCEPTION OF THE INTERNET AFFECTED MARKETING?

Prior to March 1989 when Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, how did business owners and entrepreneurs fare? How were products and services marketed and delivered to customers far and wide? How effective was marketing before the inception of the internet?

Thanks to social medias, there are no or just a few secrets in the world. Owing to the fact that gadgets has of now become a part of our daily lives, it's hard to keep secrets these days. No wonder "Valentine" stated that "the only thing that cannot be hacked is a book" Kinsman - The Secret Service. Take it online and it never goes off. This means that whatever goes online has every potential to go viral, including marketing.

But dating back to the earlier years (before the birth of the WWW), what was it like? How did companies like Ford Motors, Xerox, Hewlett Packard, and the likes reach targeted audience without the internet.....since the internet can reach more audiences than any other medium.

Prior to the internet we know today, sometimes called the "digital internet" there was a PHYSICAL internet. Mostly it was made up of wires - a literal web if you will.

Spanning the ocean floors, cities, and rural areas, many of those wires eventually entered peoples homes.

Some delivered long-form YouTube videos where the ads couldn't be skipped.

Some of them enabled a voice-only version of instant messaging which companies could use for outbound marketing.

Mobile advertising was also done, but on rudimentary versions of the cell phone that could only receive inbound messaging on frequencies pumped out from central transmitters. They used a series of dials instead of a touchscreen. Many people had them both in the home and in the car.

Early blogs were actually printed and bound and sold in stores. This is where people got articles. They were filled with different types of banner ads, some taking up multiple full-pages.

Finally, advertisers also made use of an early, human-powered version of email marketing in which physical emails - known as PEmails - could be sent to inboxes via a government-provided human autoresponder service.

True. I just felt fascinated by how successful the internet has made millions of people.

The huge success made me ask this question. Like, since the internet has made it easier for businesses to succeed, how then did companies fare before it's inception.

But thanks to user rhealy29, everythingz all clear.
