you can use desktop email clients like thunderbird or mailspring.
Add your gmail account to thunderbird and you can download the emails in a zip format.

I think you have to install gmail offline before deleting, then you can save all the emails.

Why would you want to back up your Gmail emails? Gmail is a trustworthy service and won't just randomly delete your email one day or decide that it's done for and cancel your account. However, you can still keep a backup of your Gmail messages just in case you want them offline.

One of the easiest ways to save all your Gmail messages offline is to download them to an email client, but you can also save specific messages by dragging them out of your email program and into a different folder. Some other options include setting up a forwarding rule to send messages to a different email account or using an email backup service to back up emails online.
    Thanks for this post!

I don't think there is a way to "backup" your messages, in a sense that you could later restore. As I'm sure Gmail does this to make sure they are not lost.

You can download a copy of all your emails(messages).

If you have more than one account. You can click on the icon for the account you are currently logged in to and if you added the other accounts it will show a list of them and you can select a specific account.

Once you have the account you want to download mail for...

Deselect all (all is default) and just turn on mail.

You can then click on mail and you have the option to download all or just specific labels.

If there are specific emails you want. You can create a label for them and move those emails to it and then just choose that label to download. I do this all the time when I want to bulk mail a group of users. In that, I move the messages to a label and download and then strip the email addresses out.

Email clients such as Thunderbird is usually enough. You can just download it and then your emails will automatically go inside your PC. and then you can export it or just copy the file to somewhere you want.
