Some of the photos look older than '50's - but what possible interest do you have in photos of America in the past? Since that one is volume 2 - will we have another thread for volume 1? Why not photos of Australia?

    Running out of thread ideas?

I am a big M*A*S*H fan Kay and thought that it was cool to see what most of the characters out of that show went back to after their stint in Korea.

But true he may have slipped in some old ones. Volume one, nah, two was enough, and Australia in the 50's, not worth it, we were overrun with Koalas, and Platypuses, not pretty.

well most of the planet was still in pre industrial mode .. or digging out from ww2 mode in the 1950's ..in fact i am pretty sure Cuba today you can get plenty of photos of people still driving these kinds of cars and with 1950's or 1960's living standards ..or the living standard american middle class had.. that we consider dirt poor today .. or trailor trash ..

I'm only forty.. but the one thing i would really like america to return to doing that Americans did in the 50's and 60's .. is look forward to the amazing future that science and technology promised .. instead of the gloom and doom that has been the future view as long as i can remember

That won't be happening. Too many people in this country ridicule science and fear technology. That's a recipe for disaster. Shouldn't be long, now.

well it is 2018 .. and American luddites have as much chance of success as the luddite in England 200 years ago ..and tech innovation is happening all over the world not just in the US ..It Us to be that the smartest from the world at least from china india ..and other Asian countries had to come to the US..to get ood jobs and have a good life ..

now the wealthy parents in Asia send their children to colleges here where they kick butt academically..and watch the silliness of American student.. then go back to their countries and get good jobs ..have better lives than they can get here .. for a fraction of the cost of living here .

my mom and aunts, they were all great cooks and competed with each other, but mom's MEATLOAF was the clear winner.

    Thanks for the memories.

Great meatloaf isn't a memory around here - we improved on 'Mom's' recipe and make it often.

early 50's - the Korean War

The 1950's are often treated as an 'old ideal' but a lot was going on - the beginning of desegregation - entry of women into the workplace in positions other than teacher/nurse/caregiver...

It was not an ideal society - polio - no reliable birth control for women - many mentally ill people committed long term into 'looney bins' - rape victims asked what they did to 'invite attention' - ....etc

Like every decade - the 50's had its charm and a darker side.

instead of the gloom and doom that has been the future view as long as i can remember

But...that is YOUR interpretation of the 'view' - others are more optimistic.

  • Aw, see -- I got so hypnotized by the allurin' soundtrack while I was driftin' off into (srsly pre-Moi) nostalgia I kinda plucked off alla my eyebrows.

Another 30 seconds, mebbe ima tweezer my eyeballs offa my face -- which is kinda sad bcs clearly there gonna be a Part 3 in this series prolly I would wanna look in on -- if only for the immaculately coiffured hair an' the swooshilicious outfits.

Meantime, anywan tasted my dinnah KNOWS jus' how subtle is the taste of DIGESTIVE TRACT LININ' when arranged all kinda artsy on your plate alongside the previously enjoyed meal you jus' ated & regurgitated.

      l:
yeah but if you look at the actual standard of living ..and that much of the rest of the world was still digging out from ww2 ..and the US had a fully intact manufacturing infrastructure and the marketing propaganda system in place to turn the american public into a consumer society ..which was part of why the the corporations created broadcast tv and the middle class .
