Thankfully most potential parents don't have children for valid reasons.

And Africa is going gangbusters, which is no surprize with their non-existent pension plan.

A good report overall.

That's good news, the population needs to decline dramatically to help save the planet from our outpourings and animal consumption that leads to global warming.

It also says it it is not down to sperm count decline which would be even more alarming.

Sperm count decline is estimated at 2% per year. I've read larger questimates. That adds up, rather quickly

Those factors have nothing to do with it. Obviously its subliminal Vulcan mind meld broadcasts from aliens in preparation for an invasion (lessen the numbers of the resistance to hasten their demise).

When they switch over to using us as a food source (post invasion) those numbers will sky rocket. I am shocked that you of all people don't realize this.

Or do you and this is just alien...... fake news

A Viking flag would be either Danish, Norwegian, Finnish or Swedish, not American.

Not Viking-Flag, Viking landing on the surface in 77, with a US flag image on the dare l say it probe.

It did have "Kilroy Was Here" on the other side, but we didn't see that.

            Or "Martians Were Here", underneath.

the people wondering what people will do when robots automation and AI replace the need for most humans and create a large useless class..

the other people who wonder the effects on society of an ageing population which will put much of the population over the retirement age .. in the next 30 years ..which is the similar timeline to the AI ..so many people retiring will be the ones getting replaced bi ai ..instead of younger workers..

and the worldwide decline in fertility rates ..which means many of the people who would be made useless early on in life .. by tech .. are just not getting born ..

I'm actually impressed at how completely your hypothesis contradicts reality. There's a clear trend between increased material wealth and decreased fertility backpack. Seriously, how the hell did you read that article and come to that conclusion?

I'm actually not impressed that you posted this totally irrelevant paragraph you obviously grabbed from somewhere and not knowing that posting in the O/T forum does not count towards you getting enough posts to obtain your spam linked signature that we are all of course, looking forward to seeing.

He actually raised some valid points. The material wealth of a society does lead to decreasing birthrates. In poorer societies people don't live as long and therefore there is a greater imperative (from the perspective of nature and survival of the species) to not only give birth to replacements, but also a few extra as well. This is due to the fact that some of the offspring aren't going to make it through to adulthood. They also start breeding at a younger age.

And yes, I do realise the article was on fertility rather than species continuity.

Fair enough, I retract my sarcastic post to you Jhnywalter I just glanced at it all to quickly and thought it was one of those generic replies. apologies

Actually, The reason the inhabitants of poor countries have so many children (aside from the lack of availability of contraception) is that the children are duty bound to look after them in old age. Having more increases the perceived security of this happening.

even in poor countries today there has been a dramatic decline in birth rates .. mylasia, indoniesia ,philipines ,vietname thailand , most of south and central america ..and through much of the middle east ..

the reason parts of Africa still have high birth/fertility rate.. is because the poor level of childhood imunization and hiv/aid.. and malaria ..and lack of clean drinking water and education infrastructure .. without running water .. in many cases girls stop going to school once they get their periods ..or at least go absent from schools when they have their periods if ther is not clean runing water in school and cheap menstrual supplies ..so if better education reducices birth/fertility rates ..then clean running water and menstrual supplies ..are key to better educated woman..which then lead to more material wealth in a society..

If, they're, as you say, "Duty bound," wouldn't just one child be enough?

having been the duty bound one to take care of my parents their last few year .. it tends to fall to just one ..

i did it .. both my parents passed on four years ago a few month apart .. it was a tough thing taking care of them the last few years..of their live.. but it made it very clear why i needed to focus on taking care of my own health ..but i was always was the odd duck in my family .i'm fine with being an odd duck now ...

most of my focus the last few years has been restoring my health as my parents house had very bad black mold the last several years i lived there ..which just made my already poor health worse ...but i am at almost perfect health now except for my teeth and a little back trouble .. and about 20 extra pounds ..

I have yet to have children ..so i don't have the luxury of expecting mine to take care of me in old age .. the best i can do is to get them on the path of building their own wealth as early as possible.. my family was lower middle class everything was get a job and work until old enough to retire and get a pension.. that won't be an option for me ..

i'm impressed that anyone can be so intellectually lazy to attribute ..a massive change in humanity .. to a single cause .. when there are multiple causes to it .. the decrees in birthrates among Chinese where a government policy and not because of increase in material wealth ..and that covers 1/5th of the human race..

instead of increase in wealth.. in the western world the decline in birthrates is more likely do to the increased expense of raising each child . and instead of material wealth .. the biggest factor is usually educating woman more in into older ages .. and more female involvement in non farm workforce ..

hell another big factor is a shift from substance farming which requires bigger families to more merchandised farming worldwide .. so more children instead of being valued for more labor as in the past ..are now just more mouths to feed and more of a financial burden ..for longer as in farm based societies oldr children take responsibility for younger children .. where in modern society .. older children are probably in school.. an not there to help
