    Hi Chris,

I will be sitting in Oman so....sandy desert

Growing up, real tree 100% of the time. Pain to cut and get into the stand when we bought big ones but the smell of pine made it feel like Christmas in the household.

Depends on my mood and who leaves their door unlocked in my part of the woods. I only have two sources. The lady down the dirt road works out of the local honky-tonk and the tree is often a silicon fake with a weird odor. The cowboy down the road lives in a barn with his horse and the tree smells of fresh pine and fresh horse manure.

You'll want to do something to get rid of that nasty fresh pine smell.

  • Fake trees.

My wife is hilarious. In our home she puts up two fake trees..one in the living room (so our neighbors across the street can see it), and one in the sun room (so the neighbors behind us can see it).

Christmas day is always at a relatives home. There are no presents under the trees.

And.....every season and holiday, we have dioramas and settings above our fireplace, above the entertainment center, on our dining room table and on every other table in our home.

My wife loves putting these things up, and taking them down. I love holding the ladder while she does.

Our cats love taking them down too.

Nothing. I just don't think that way.

My wife buys everyone gifts but she and I don't exchange gifts. She exchanges gifts with her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, daughter and grandchildren.

I help with the trees, but she does pretty much everything else. I'm always offering to help, but she enjoys the process, not just the result.

Cool, someone in the world has got it right. I have been doing it wrong all this time.

My wife points and I have to put up the trees. What is your secret Claude?

Relatives of mine always show up and eat all the food and drink everything in sight. A few of them found my possum stash!

Dioramas? Had to google that one. Turns out the wife has more than a few around the house. Once I tried to dust them for her and almost pulled back a nub.

My wife loves putting these things up as well, but not even close to my suggestions. She just points to the couch, Fluffy screams and..

Yepper, Christmas at my house is a trip.

Shouldn't the question be - Christmas, real or fake?

Also, how real is a real, dead tree?

In the Sun Room we have a fake tree that's about 10 ft fall - it has all the lights on it - easy to put up and actually looks pretty good for a fake tree...

But in the living room i decorate a 'real' tree with a history - I bought a Norfolk Island pine in a tiny pot about 10 years ago. The little tree was about 5 inches high - one of those they sell as a 'throw-away' at Christmas. It was on sale - paid 50 cents for it.

I kept watering it and it kept growing - so I'd repot it and... It's now 7-8 ft tall with long graceful branches...and I put a few favorite ornaments on it.

We have three cats and two big dogs - and none of them bother the christmas stuff or trees...but I've had cats in the past who loved to climb them.

We used the same fake tree in the living room for a few years. One year the nieces got old enough to spend Christmas Eve at our house.

The boss sent me with my axe to the woods. Brought back a nice one, named it Hillary and placed it in the living room.

Then the boss pointed me to the storage room. Setup a fake tree in my man cave that used to be the family T.V. room. I named him Bill.

Bill always had a wicked grin. Every now and then a DVD and an empty 6-pack mysteriously was found. I'd just smile at Bill, trash the empty cans and carry on like a good soldier.

Christmas Eve I was awakened to what sounded like a scuffle in the living room, figured it was Santa, shushed him so as not to wake the kids and went back to sleep.

Christmas morning I was awakened by my nieces screaming jumping up and down on the bed. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, thinking nothing unusual in my house on Christmas morning until..

I realized the screams were not of happiness. More like terror! Loud sounds coming from the living room. Rushed to the living room with the kids in tow.

OMG! Bill and Hillary! Covered the kids eyes..

      You go Bill

The tree that constantly complains about the temperature of the room.....that worries that its decorations don't match perfectly...that complains about how the bark isn't as smooth and silky as it used to be....that wonders if you find other..younger trees more attractive....that worries about getting its sap on the carpet?

      !s female.

The tree that just sits there and doesn't do shit?

      Is male.

We've been using the same fake one for 6 years straight. The easy way to save some money and mother nature. Sometimes, I bring some pine-tree twigs cut from neighbor's tree.

I usually buy a tree from a local tree farm that plants new trees in place of evey one they cut down. Than the town picks them up at the end of the Season and grinds them into wood chips for the spring. No real waste that way and it saves the forrest's.

Just finished decorating a Fake tree at my Mom's town home today ! They are low maintance thats for sure.
