Hi guys!

I'm new here but have been a lurker for a while - I must say that the world of marketing has always seemed to me to be like swimming in a pool with sharks. Har Har, OK I'm not funny, jokes aside.

So, my impression is that Facebook is either dead or dying and one of the main reasons is bots running rampant. I don't know if my impression is right, so what do you think?

Also, what do you think will be the future of social media?

I think as long as there is something like an internet, there will be social-media-type platforms, but how do you think it will be different from today?

Personally, I think there is promise in things like the Steemit model etc.

Any thoughts?

Hi, and welcome arrm, Motif, the end of Facebook, Twitter and all annoying feed type platforms will be slow and gradual, (well, with any luck) since it is leading to a higher incidence of a sure neck, and finger pressing a glass screen all day.

From what l have read a restaurant is already offering free meals to children who put these things into a bucket, and actually have a civilized meal together.

And schools are considering banning them during class also.

With any luck shopping centres will be next, (lost count of how many idiots staring into their phones and typing while walking have almost run into me).

As for the future, unfortunately when holographic smart phones become commonplace, then new platforms utalizing this 3D component will exceed FB and such, and instead of sifting through a feed, it will be a 3D version.

Which will hopefully make them safer for all.

Thanks Tagiscom for your answer, I hope things change for the better! The idea of a hologaphic feed sounds very exciting, I just hope it doesn't just turn into a "Black Mirror" episode hehe

I love the connectivity of online media and information at fingertips, but do hope that a better balance can be found like you suggested!

Many would argue that Facebook is already a Black Mirror episode.

The same people perhaps would hope that bots will run it into the ground.

With Mark Zuckerberg forming earth's most powerful brainstorming secret forum with Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Google's Larry Page, Jeff Bezos and the machine connected still functioning brains of Stephen Hawking and Steve Jobs Facebook will transform and transcend just similar to what Google and Microsoft did so the "world's largest country" will not be facing any type of genocide any time soon.

Someone like a Mark Zuckerberg is fully aware of such risks and will simply get Facebook to evolve throughout the ages plus they have enough money to buy out any emerging competition.

When you develop a virtual product for maybe thousands of bucks and it's now valued by the market at hundreds of millions of dollars which will only be on paper and the immense riches to be derived will not be realized until you sell.

This will be the catch for any emerging technology challenging facebook - they will be bought out in the early stages putting back companies such Facebook back in control as the dominant factor in the marketplace.

      Man, that's dark

Do you think any emerging blockchain tech that could challenge FB would also be taken over by the Zuck? Thus also putting control of tech that was supposed to be "free" in the hands of a few Tech Bosses?

I was kinda hopeful that Social platforms as we know it today could evolve into something a little more organic, free and "human". So, less of this becoming a slave to the click habit and more of using social media as a tool to connect people.

Facebook will never die in my opinion. Heck, in the future we will be able to Facebook with dead people! It may be a Facebook owned company and that means very little to users and also means Facebook not only is making money off of live users.. they will also be making money off of dead users.

Hope I live long enough to see it. Be assured I will jump at the chance to convert my existing page to a dead user page if the opportunity arises before I pass. Why? Just to piss off all of my favorite people that I like to piss off <smile>. Starting with the pizza delivery person that has an obsession to deliver warm beer with my pizza.

Then there is newspaper delivery person that always unrolls my paper and reads the comics. A hologram appears every time he opens the mailbox that depicts me hitting Bugs Bunny with a baseball bat.

Then there is my Facebook auto poster that automatically posts to this thread things like.. "Send Ice Water - It;s HOT down Here." and "I buried $1M in my favorite person's backyard."

Right now with a large number of people staring at the screen of their smartphones.. and facebook owning the major apps on those devices .. Facebook,Instagram, Whats app .. and if snap chats founders where willing to sell zuck would have owned that to.

Zuckerberg knows the business he is ine and where the attention of users are.. so don't count on Facebook dieing any time soon ..even if it goes full social justice warrior.. and bans any user expressing any conservative or right leaning views (or shadow bans..so most people can't see what you post) .. it will still be around for a long while ..

how are the bots negativly effecting what you do..to risk killing facebook

OK cool, so because of changes, FB might actually become more usable

haha, well you could say that the idea that "Facebook is DEAD" is a myopic view

XD hehehehe, cool, I'm actually glad to hear that this is the general consensus, it helps with future planning.

It sucks when you plan campaigns and marketing ideas and then a few months later everything changes and it sort of pulls the rug out under you.

Business 101: Plan for change. When you make a business plan you also have to plan for business contingencies.

Facebook contingencies includes biding your time until Facebook campaigns are resolved and are back in your favor. Simple as that.

The only constant is change in this industry!

Be ready for it and embrace it. A well known quote that still holds true - "Adapt or die". While you might not die, many have gone from business owner back to working for someone else as they were unable to adapt to the change.

Yes, perhaps that's one way to see it. I didn't mean for this to be a terribly serious discussion. I was just wondering, in light of the scandal rumors if FB is still popular for users and advertisers and if marketers think FB will continue being popular or stand the chance of being replaced by a different type of platform in the future.

There's been great answers so far, for example, the Zuck will find a way to remain king no matter what, that's quite insightful information for me. I wouldn't have thunk it, but I can see it as a strong possibility. Instagram (under FB) is proving very very clever at capturing market share, so that is supporting "evidence" I guess. My problem with IG is that it also uses "addictive tactics" on users, for now it's fine, but I wonder where it's going.

Yes, definitely there is a change, but those changes are for better thing. Last month millions of users data is stolen from the facebook and there are many fake accounts in the facebook which are using it for malicious activities. so you can see a decline in impression and decrease in engagement. Because facebook is now rolling its updates.

I'm not an internet marketer. Or rather I don't try to be I guess is what I mean. Social Media Marketing is more my knowledge base, but Freelancing unrelated things is my daily goal. I only ended up here from Freelancer, and didn't even know it was a forum for marketing people until after I joined - I just liked what I saw!

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is I am a horrible sales person and I don't try to market my brand in ways even a beginner should. I have all the creative ideas but lack the skills needed to apply them usually (producing digital art or coding software are the skills I'm lacking, yet get flooded with all kinds of ideas for artists or developers.. I'm great at telling you how to improve your project on github but please don't ask me to make it a PR because I'll just blush and laugh at you coyly while slowly running away..)

I also love writing so much that I never shut up..

What I'm trying to say is.. even as an 'outsider' I had the same feelings about FB.. whereas it wasn't that long ago that FB was sort of the 'place to be seen' at, but now it feels like Twitter or Tumbler might be making a comeback.. G+ is closing shop next year so maybe we are just waiting on a new innovative social site to bloom... This is just the calm before the storm.

Facebook hit a record high on July 20 2018 ($209.94). On the 24th of December it closed at $124.06, a fall of 41%. Nowhere near the 75%+ you claim.

The derivative crap you trade bear no relationship to actually investing in Facebook, or any other stocks.

Hopefully you'll learn that lesson in 2019, otherwise facts are always going to go against you.

Well, since Facebook is in the business of making money and it appears that they make money ( a lot of money) it stands to reason that they will continue to to make money regardless of your expert opinion to put it politely

When you have walked in the shoes of Facebook then I think your opinion has metal. Until then just keep on participating in the so called scam (your own words) that you say they are all the way to poorhouse.

You obviously do not know how to pick up girls and save a few bucks when walking around shopping centers, lol. No worries, I'll teach you Tag.

First, select a cutie in a min-skirt with an expensive apple.

Second, trip her. While shes thrashing around on the ground in her min-thingy take a video and pics and upload to your Facebook page. We call it a bonus.

Be a gentleman and help her to her feet and offer to buy her lunch. You are already armed with the right stuff, she can afford an apple, so she doesn't need your money and can afford her own lunch. She might turn you down. So offer her mouth-to mouth and make her smile. Then ask her if she'll buy you lunch and maybe a new car. Make her smile.

At this point she'll probably tell you she has a boyfriend. Simply say something like if he was real boyfriend.. you would not have the pleasure to meet her. Make her smile.

If she still turns you down. Jump back a step and shout "$50.00 are you for real?" Make her turn red or smack the hell out of you.

At this time a crowd of people will be uploading your antics to Facebook. Shoot the crowd the video and pics on your Facebook page. The trend starts. Your mug will be all over Facebook.

Give it an hour. Repeat the same process with a different cutie except this time show the cutie the Facebook page.

Basically said, getting over a flu, and we both agreed it sucked.

I can see why it sucked for her.. customer at her work station with the flu. Your lucky she didn't flash a weapon.

            Okay, at banks..

When an attractive woman at the bank makes nice with you..

No, banks can't brandish weapons, but some have been known to have some dropbears on standby.

Facebook might currently be filled with old people, but there's no denying that it still got power. Who wouldn't want to target the 1.7 billion active users that it has. Yes, Facebook seems uncool and Mark Zuckerberg is orchestrating a bad Black Mirror episode that we wouldn't want to see, but that doesn't mean that you can't use the platform for your own gain.

No, I think Facebook or any other social media platform will never ever be gonna dead because nowadays these platforms are not just a source of entertainment, these platforms becomes source of income for a huge number of people globally.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11475848].message }}
  • Facebook is going to stay alive until a better all-in-one social media platform come in, but atm that seems extremely unlikely. There's just too much that fb offers right now - pages, events, messaging, streaming... Its just too good as a tool for brands to engage with users and for users to stay up to date with various things they are interested in. Just like youtube is still alive because everyone is too lazy to migrate to a different platform. Same with facebook - users are invested too much to even consider switching.

yeah - not gonna lie - this is true I think

That's true, I think it's awesome! Do you think though that a different platform could become more popular over time and take over as favorite from Facebook?

dark! ...but I think I get what you're saying...

Hey, thanks for this reply, very awesome and enjoyable read! Wish you great success with your Freelancing endeavors.

      • Hey, glad you enjoyed my post! Well, I honestly doubt that something could take over facebook with popularity. Facebook is such a big company right now they can just buy out any competition and make it work for them (WhatsApp, Instagram). But maybe if more shady stuff comes out about misuse of user data or promotion of fake news then maybe facebooks reputation will be done for, then a better alternative could come in and fill in the gap.

Even with all the commotion with what has happened recently, the average user spends about a half hour checking their feed. While that is actually less than it has been in the past, there is still much value for advertisers. Along with AI they are improving what they do every day.

I don't like to admit it as far as facebook is concerned, but they have encouraged many people to join when they released the Oculus.

It features a 'home' area where you can furnish your living room with real pictures and stream videos...from Facebook no less, and there's no other way.

Needless to say, I'm just settling with the default images.

With this considered, when you think about it on a deeper level, it is intriguing and borderline frightening to think that Facebook are not only going to have the personal data of thousands upon thousands of people, they are also creating our 'reality' - provided of course that we opt in.

Part of me wants to say that any organisation that has invasion of people's privacy as a business model will eventually meet its come-uppance.

Unfortunately, it isn't actually an invasion of privacy if its members gladly hand over all their details.

Facebook is not dead now, but it is certainly dying. Don't believe me, see this.

The future of social networks, in my opinion, is getting back to the old social networks; I mean, using those that do not demand us to reveal our real names unless we want to, and those that do not use an algorithm to decide what we see. At the moment, that points to Diaspora, Mastodon and Pump now.
