I wanted to get everyone's opinion and stories on whether Internet Marketing is a Career or Hobby for you? Can you seriously make a living off of Internet Marketing? And if so which would be your tried and true path to become wealthy?
  • Profile picture of the author Daniel Evans
The term doesn't mean anything other than marketing on the Internet.

IM is done in a whole different manner of ways by many different types of people who have different approaches, commitments and goals.

Marketing on the Internet for example could be a mere part of someone's service orientated business. Another person in contrast, in affiliate marketing promoting ebooks or memerships, the marketing might be 99% of the job.

This is the Off Topic forum, so our opinions, at least mine, are like aholes.. everyone has one. Though some may have more than one.

Personally, I have never tried to make a living with my mine.

Internet marketing has not made me wealthy albeit I have not tried to make myself wealthy with it. I make a living with it whereas it pays the bills.

I treat internet marketing the way I would treat another business. You have to invest time energy and resources to it .Yes you can make a living out of it but it takes time to build a sustainable brand.Yes many people do it as a hobby and make money. So it all depends on the persons goals and out look.

Hi Jamel. I like your attitude concerning investing time energy and other resources to make it work including connecting with the right people and possibly a genuine mentor. I am open to connecting!

Hi Tony. my name is Will, I agree with you positive mindset is needed in this industry, hard work is a must, setting a couple of hours each day, commitment, consistent and Money, I will also add a genuine mentor who has been there,

Hi Daniel. My name is Will, Internet marketing is productive and an income generating tools, when maximise you will build a very successful Business and help others earn money and live the lifestyle they want for them self and their family.

Hi Shahabuddiin010119722. My name is Will. I agree with your internet marketing a job for many of us, so it can be difficult to understand if some people say it is a hobby, however checking the word Hobby this is the definition:
`an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure`
"Her hobbies are reading and gardening" for me the internet Business helps me generate income and enable me to help others earn money so they can live the lifestyle they want for themselves and family. nice sharing with you!

Hi spartan14. I agree with you having a big dream is necessary, because without a dream there is no destination and Napoleon Hill said `whatever the Mind can dream and believe it can achieve`, so keep your dream alive by writing it down, look at it when you wake in the morning and before you sleep at night and in addition most jobs in this 21st century is online work anyway including those who work at the offices. please do not hesitate to ask me questions if you need any help.

Tried IM for a good 10 years, and sure you can make a lot from it, but in my case not without an other 10 good years of ward work.

Online stockmarket trading has more potential and less barriers, than most other options.

The problem with the question here.. is what do you the OP define as internet marketing .

When people use the term on this forum .. i tend to believe they are restricting it to Information marketing exclusively using the internet.. or some type of consulting doing the internet part of the marketing for other businesses ..

hey there are people building wealth using the internet and digital marketing to sell printed coffee cups and tee shirts.. or a wide range of products ..they put in a box and ship ..or putting how to videos on you tube..or in many different ways ..

so yes you can builld a business or career using the internet to market products to people ..

Hi Odahh. My name is Will, I agree with you, anyone who is willing and determines can use the internet to build his own business, career, promoting other people's product or services, and more importantly creating a Hud where people can come and get solid advise regarding products, business startup and services. I am open to sharing more ideas with you.

Hi Kay King. How are you?
My name is will, I like what you said about the question ``that it would not matter if anyone told the individual what works for them``, that the individual involved should list their skills and interest, using the forum to learn, research on IM, choose relevant niches put in the needed work in order to reap the reward. I will like to add that just as football, basketball and any other game there is skillset and rules the player has to learn and use in other to succeed, so is this internet Business, so I agree with you. There are proven Blueprint skills to help anyone to achieve and earn money on the internet/through a mentor. Thank you for your time and do not hesitate to drop me a message anytime.

Hi Suraj Ukarde. my name is Will.
What do you do for a living?

Hi, Hindigemshtc my name is Will.
I agree with you he can start with a hobby and when the money is coming, he can take it to another level by creating a career out of it.

    Come on, folks...

which would be your tried and true path to become wealthy
THAT is the question - the rest is 'lead in fluff'.

It wouldn't matter if everyone told you what works for them - doesn't mean it will work for you.

Make a list of your own skills and interests - read this forum and use forum search to find threads about choosing a niche and the various types of IM that people here do....choose something and get started.

Forget about 'wealthy' - make your first goal learning to do what you've chosen...and to do it well. Focus on earning enough to pay expenses, to buy ads, etc.... Wealth is at the top of the hill - the climb is up to you.

"Wealth' was never my goal. I've paid for cars and mortgage and a decent lifestyle....but my GOAL was to work less and live more.

      Love it .

this might be silly.. but one thing i have really started to ask is what the hell does someone really mean when they use a word .. or do they even really know what it means ..

wealth or wealthy is one of those words people use . but i really thing the majority of people have a fuzzy idea on what it is .. or restrict it to purely financial concepts .

you can go out to a nice restaurant with family and spend a few hundred dollars and act rich .. or if you have the skills to cook that quality of food or better. and have the family or friends over . that is a type of wealth . the family and friend you want to spend time with and the ability to prepare high quality food ..and the dinning area big enough to have a comfy gathering .

there are many of these life enhancing skill people can learn and would have had no choice but to learn not to long ago ..

i guess its a choice do you earn money to live or really live ..or do you live to earn money..thinking one day you may have enough to start really living ..

honestly a house that is paid off, and cars that are fully paid for . are wealth even if they do not generate income . you need to live some where . and i have heard many stories of rents doubling and tripling or sudden evictions from new owners ..that led to people losing most of their other stuff ..

As a career working for a company, you can get a decent salary. The average base salary for a Digital Marketing Manager in the Boston area is $112,257 with the average total compensation which includes bonus, healthcare, and retirement being$122,461.

If you hustled hard enough and had great systems in place, you certainly could find enough clients for your own business to give you this level of income.

Digital marketing as a side hustle could give you a nice bit of change each month on top of a job.

If you are not making any profit or not paying yourself a salary in a business venture, it soon takes on the look of a hobby.

I feel in the beginning it was a hobby. To actually profit from it you need time and money. For it to be a career, there is a lot that needs to be done consistently. It also depends on which field of IM you go into.

A hobby that becomes a consistent way of profiting. I would never use the word career for IM. That may just be me.
Also, internet marketing is a very loose term. Now, can you live on the profits you make online? Certainly. For it to be consistent, you need to constantly be investing your time and money. I would never call it a career, though. Just a great way of profiting. Now if you're talking about MLM, well that's a whole different ballgame. Personally. I prefer CPA, it can be completely automated with minimal testing and advertising.
All different types of Internet Marketing have their benefits and shortcomings. Do your research before jumping in head first. Learning about different types of IM is great, that way you can choose what works for you. For me, that was what I was doing as a hobby. Eventually, you can move on to using it to fund your daily needs. Just keep at it and you'll eventually find that you can consistently profit. Goodluck.

I used to think Internet Marketing as a Hobby but something happened to me in past 2 months which made me realize that Internet Marketing is much more than a hobby.

    So long story short....

I was searching for a dedicated hosting for my clients. Since, i was unable to find affordable options so i decided to take on Quora and asked few people about the thing i wanted to ask.

I got a number of answers (most of them were having links to the places they suggested) and some of them were having professional accounts to promote their product online. I chose Hostnoc, a US based web hosting provider because of an answer i got.

The guy was helpful and answered my long paragraphs questions patiently. And that was the time i realized that it is not just a Hobby, It's a CAREER!!

It could be both! For me- at least- it is possible to be both because IM has become such an important part of nearly every career, job, business, and person.

For example, if you sell products online, and you've struggled to meet the sales that you need. You start marketing your product, and begin to meet your sales expectations. Did you meet those sales because you are a professional seller, or professional marketer? That is when IM is a career.

Do you like engaging with people, understanding trends, influencing through content, and analyzing how people interact in a physical, or cyber space? It doesn't matter whether you stock shelves at a supermarket, stock your own refrigerator to ensure nothing goes to waste, or stock your website with content to be consumed by others. If you enjoy paying attention to human behavior, engaging, or influencing others, it can be a hobby.

We're all moving into a phase where there is less distinction between online and offline life. It's an integrated effort for most things these days, and IM will only become more important as we rely more on technology to market ourselves, as well as other businesses, products, and brands.

To become wealthy, I am focusing on data science because data is the most proven way to understand online human behavior. If you pay attention to how others interact with the internet, it really doesn't matter what you are marketing or selling. The decisions that you make based on that data is what will determine the level of success.

Internet Marketing can be a career or a hobby. It is all dependant on the individual's perspective. Let me explain you with examples.

    As a Hobby!

Suppose you love writing, one can start writing blogs. However, monetizing the blogging website is the next step. If one goes for monetization techniques, then he/she enters the world of internet marketing. Here, an individual can convert a passion into a business. However, doing digital marketing as a hobby for a long term without an end objective will not serve the purpose. But, one can start as a hobby and then optimize.

    As a career!

When one choose the career as digital marketing, then he/she can pick one of the following:
    To mention a few,

    1. Corporate Job
    2. Start own firm to help other businesses
    3. Start an e-commerce store

  • I don't believe I was born to just make a living.
But I do believe I was born to live in abondance.

One thing that you should be aware of: " If you take it as a hobby, it will be a hobby, but if you take it as a serious business, it will be a serious business."

To give you an idea, you can not make enough money from the internet unless you treat it as a thruth and I order to live a life of abondance using the internet, you've got to give as much value as possible.
In other words, you need to stop looking for money but instead start trying to be valuable to the point where no one can ignore you.

I wish you good luck and much success!

It's a mindset game. As more opportunities unfold, it's likely that a lot of 9-5 jobbers start seeing internet marketing as an easy way out of the drudgery. It isn't. Just like most other jobs, it requires mental and sometimes physical exertion. So, would you treat it as a day job or as a side hustle? Yes, duality is a foregone conclusion, and a mindless windup toy, isn't mutually exclusive.

Yep, l have been at it for 10 years, failed for most of those, but learned a lot, and changed tracks more times than l like to mention.

And while your family might say, what a waste, and you won't get anywhere, they are right if you stop now.

If you persist and never stop, then good luck tends to catch up with hard work, and applying some of the techniques and methods starts to become more tangible.

That is if you are a risk the lot, sc**w insurance, and a comfortable retirement in pocket money, for the million plus.

Yep opportunities unfold after years of effort, some do it earlier but most don't.

Read about the founder of Amazon today, (divorce settlement) which he started in his garage in 1994.

24 years later he owns millions of shares, which is worth, over 252 Billion dollars US.

24 years of hard work for just over quarter of a trillion, certainly better than 24 years for a new four wheel drive, and a holiday then a gov, handout for life, while you beg and borrow to fix the house and your body.

way to get the story wrong and tell it in a way far from the truth and far from how BEzoz tells it himself and told it 20 years ago ..

he saw the growth of the internet .. and picket the product he felt was best suited to sell online which was books ..it was never what we consider an internet marketing business .. or what is hinted at on these forums .

the funny part of the story is that originally Bezoz wanted to cal it cadabra for abracadabra . but it sounded to much like Cadaver ..so he went with amazon .. interesting how both Bezoz and Jack Ma founder of Alibaba ..had magical myths on their mined when naming their companies

just because many companies do some of the initial work in the house of the founder or the garage does not mean it was founded in the garage ...

  • Idk why anyone would get into IM as a hobby. Much more fun hobbies to do than IM (surfing, playing an instrument, picking up girls, underwater crocheting, whatever you get your fix from).

I guess you could call a side project/hustle a hobby but that's more like a "fun way to supplement your income".

IM is a medium and isn't any different from radio, TV, billboards, direct mail, except it can be done on your laptop from anywhere in the world (which is awesome as that makes it more accessible and less risky for people to get into).

    My 2 cents worth.

The OP seemed to be asking a valid question. I saw others show responses with the same question.

Best I can say is, just like any career path someone takes there is a lot of preparation, learning curve, a bit of luck of being in the right place at the right time.

I'm smart enough that I recognized it as a career in 2010. Bought a good product from a good marketer that actually uses the techniques she teaches and started to see some success. Then Google changed the rules and my hundreds of hours of work went down in flames. (Big companies change the rules regularly so what works one month could be a failure the next.) I tried several more products that promised the moon, but were basically all scams or out dated or incomplete. I've spent thousands of hours looking at free stuff as well.

In 2011 I knew a whole bunch of stuff but could not get the pattern right for any success. Jan 2012, I did something quite by accident and suddenly had some $60-90 commissions drop in my lap right out of the sky.

I have tinkered and tried many things, much wiser and poorer. Late 2017 still looking for something current and valid I ran across my first repeatable success. Well, sort of. I got a mentor that worked with me a lot and I built a couple websites, got approved to be an Amazon Associate, currently getting traffic from Google and Pinterest. Make maybe $20 a month currently on very tiny commissions that slowly add up. This is all on hundreds of hours of work on my websites. Now I spend as much time replacing dead Amazon links as I do creating new posts. So I am looking for a different method to make my IM living, but it IS my chosen career.

For me, I know there is a way to do this and maintain my integrity. Also, it is useless but everything you might pay someone to learn is out there on the Internet for free somewhere and lots of people here will tell you to find it and learn that way. I say useless because how does a person that doesn't know what they need, know what free stuff is valid and what is crap. That usually ends in failure. They will likely end up like me where I know tons and tons of stuff about writing articles and posts, websites, hosting, SEO, email marketing, copywriting and whatever, but can't for the life of me figure out which of those things fit together in what way to create a successful income stream.

I bought a book written by a guy making $200 thousand a month. Yes, he was making millions a year. The month the book was published the primary source of that income changed their policy and it was gone like that. He, retired a multi-millionaire at that point and is living happily ever after instead of selling the method that made him a millionaire. But there are other people out there that have no problem selling you something like that knowing it won't work.

The hobby/career questions sounds like you have heard from people that also invested into some of those "Guru" types that have no integrity. Their income is from selling a product to gullible(like I was) people, but they don't actually use their methods for their income.

If you truly want to learn how to do this as a career instead of hobby, you will probably have to invest in a coach/mentor to guide you with plenty of hand holding. But if you wanted to become a Nurse or Engineer, you would have to invest in yourself with money, time, and education just the same.

Newbies spend bucks to learn, or they don't. The difference is what usually differentiates this from being a hobby and career.

Yep, exactly, it takes time to whittle down what works from what doesn't. It took me 6 years to realize that getting consistent traffic is a b***ch, (consistent as in a decent profit, instead of throwing away coins) and staying with sites with their own traffic that can grow indefinitely was the way to go.

For me, I know there is a way to do this and maintain my integrity. Over time you will figure out what works and when it is time to ditch it, (l spent 2.5 years building a website, that makes pocket money, and also written articles with similar lame results.

I bought a book written by a guy making $200 thousand a month. Yes, he was making millions a year. Yep, corporations and the gov, hate it when an easy way is found that is legal that creates wealth, as everyone will gravitate towards it, and not work or pay payroll tax.

You usually have to think in a way that the working masses do not, to get ahead.

If you truly want to learn how to do this as a career instead of hobby, you will probably have to invest in a coach/mentor to guide you with plenty of hand holding. Yea, gave the flyer business, (have their own traffic) a year, but the numbers failed, then after trying other options ended up with online trading.

With online trading, no traffic issues, and no dodgy companies, just as long as you keep clear of margin accounts, (and research it). And no income ceiling, IF you manage to make it profitable, which most don't.

And l have followed a successful trader online, but am starting to break away from his methods and forge my own, with some of those methods being derived from the last 10 years online.

So winning a few running events, might come in handy one day, if you end up selling sports drinks.

In U.S., IRS defines a hobby as any activity earning less than 5,000 dollars a year, but as soon as you earn more than 600 dollars, you are required to let them know about your budding hobby income. More than likely any related expenses for this hobby exceed any income until you are above 5,000 a year.

IF IM is your job and you like it, then you may decide to make it a career.

And for all else, IM is something you will realize, become aware of and use effectively when you attempt to sell anything online, whether you like it or not, regardless if it is a hobby or career, otherwise you will sell very little or nothing at all.

Hobbies are and should stay enjoyable. While a job or career may not be enjoyable, it pays the bills and hopefully leaves you time to enjoy a hobby!

It will be a hobby in the beginning. Like pretty much everything in life, when you start out internet marketing will be very hard. It is one of those hobbies where you'll think it's easy to make a lot of money, mainly because of what you see on the web. A lot of articles write about this, and how it's so easy to make it your full time job. It is not and you will be very lucky if it becomes that. Here is my take on this. It can be both. Let me keep it simple and explain this to you. As a career, it is certainly an interesting field and has a lot of growth potential and in fact one of the most in-demand roles. As a hobby, It just comes in handy to know the basics considering the era that we are in now. you can start any business of your own with more confidence if you have some knowledge of internet marketing.

I've been doing I.M for over 10 years now, started when I was 16 and still in School, loved it then and still love it now. I look at all the paths my friends went down and look back on my own life without too many regrets.

One thing is, there isn't anything else I would rather do for a living, I love the freedom I.M provides.

    So for me, a career.

It is not a hobby in any sort. People quit their 9-5 jobs so they can do this full time to support their family and other expenses.

It takes the right mindset and affiliate program and mentorship to be successful in internet marketing.

Assuming and proposing that Internet marketing is only about affiliate products and mentorship is as ignorant as assuming that it's a hobby (or a full time job), and not something which is utterly subjective - which it is.

The consolation is that you aren't ignorant, since that information was simply contributed to suit your agenda.

Internet Marketing is a Business like any other business, those who take internet marketing as hobby quit very soon. Unless you treat this as a business internet marketing will not give you results. There is no magic method that will make you cash online over night. the sooner you accept that fact the better for you. Again internet marketing is a longterm business and you reap your results much later.

I believe it could be both, depending on your goals and dreams. For me its a career, I call it my job though it's fun like a hobby. If you treat it like a job and work on it every day you can make as much money as you want but if you treat it like a hobby and plot along every now and then and you're happy to make a bit of money on the side then you can do that also. x

This is my first post since....(forget when I last posted).

Truth to be told, Internet marketing can generate enough income, and even can accumulate wealth. You will need to spend fairly long hours to learn the curve, and start to earn some decent amount of money.

This shouldn't be treated as a scam / sell something useless to people, as it will damage your reputation in a long run.

As any other Job, the reason why I was away for a long time, is that I have an offer which pays out better than what I'm getting out of internet marketing.

If you really want to go into internet marketing, forget about all the hype, because those are the thing that marketers want you to feel, so that you can start buying their product (mostly on IM stuffs). Take your time learning, and start something small, unless you have big pockets to spend.

    Thanks,
    William.

On my perspective, I feel like it started out as a hobby and then it becomes a career.

Most people make the mistake of thinking it is easy to make money from internet marketing. It is far from easy and usually takes a lot of time and work to succeed. You have to continuously learn and adapt to changes.

That's like asking is auto racing a career or a hobby.

Ask a Formula 1 driver... and my guess is you'll know their answer before they respond. Ask the weekend racer that occasionally attends track days, and they'll have a different answer and perspective.

What are your goals? What are you willing to sacrifice to be successful with it. How long do you plan on doing this for? This will determine for YOU if it's simply a hobby or a career.
