    Shane - it's not funny.





    This was a tremendous loss, though at least some of the building was saved. My Grandson texted me about it - he had visited the cathedral on a high school tour of Europe and had talked about how impressive it was. The importance of that building could be seen on faces of the crowds watching the fire.

    Yeah, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, (Disney movie) had a similar fate, although it did have the animated statues, (comedy relief) and the hunchbacks singing lessons, and longing for a hot date, (which happens in the second video, pfft,...only in a Disney movie) well an animated movie wasn't as bad as real life, unfortunately.

    I know Kay, my Mother feels your pain. And they are going to rebuild, although we can never replace an 800 year old gargoyle.

      gargoyle furniture priceless artworks.. i am seeing even many atheists non Catholics who are saddened by the fire ..

        Why wouldn't they be? As the Taj Mahal, The Great Pyramid of Giza or the Parthenon - to quote just a few examples - demonstrate, great architecture transcends religion. It belongs to everyone.

          Exactly. It is a magnificent building with great works of art. You don't need to be religious to find some things awe inspiring.

            i understand that ..and it effected me when i saw the news of the fire yesterday.. i guess i should not have bothered trying to point out to Shane that there is more going on with most people than sadness over the destruction of a few gargoyles ..

            in any case where are we today with out modern tech ..on this planet .. purposely building anything that is for people 200 -1000 year from now .. i mean things of beauty ..

      I know a town in Ohio where I may be able to lay my hands on an 800 year old Gargoyle.

      Quasimodo left his sandwiches at the Cathedral and rushed in to try and save them, but was beaten back by the flames. He said: "Esmeralda, I've lost The Lunch-Pack of Notre Dame"

    It's sad but not deeply sad for me. Life goes on. People live and people die. Relics and some glorified artifacts that PEOPLE make important hold little value to me and some others.

    I know that sounds overly cynical but honestly I am just not a "thing" type person to begin with. Never have been and never will be. Just build a new and more better , modern Church. Case solved.

    Agreed, but just imagine an asteroid hitting the Earth, (tidal waves, etc) and wiping out these sorts of buildings in one hit! A nuclear war could also do likewise, (from what l last read, it would also destroy our ozone layer so much, that we most likely would go back to the stone ages again).

    If Da Vinci's roof got gutted out then l would feel a little saddened that it was gone, but also reconciled that it lasted for this long, and it had a good run.

    I may joke about gargoyles, but understand a great piece of architecture getting guttered, and the 800 year history that add's a sting.

    But tend to agree with Discrat, it is a thing, and old valuable thing but a building none the less.

    I have never seen Notre Dame live, but very sad that there was such a fire. I read in the news that it will be restored and valuable items inside the cathedral did not suffer.
