What for when planning enterprise resources need to use exactly the ERP system?

Hello. Perhaps not many will be able to answer me. Although I hope to find the answer to the question. In short, I'm interested in why, when planning enterprise resources, is it necessary to use the ERP system? Is she so good that she overshadows the others?     No expert here but aren't there many software packages for ERP ? It's not just one thing.



    Have never used an 'ERP system' but I thought of it as a management for an entire business to automate/coordinate various functions of running a business.
