Anyone watching game of thrones here? If so how was the finale?

My wife and I are watching it tonight. We can't wait. I've done my best to avoid all the spoiler alerts. I hope it is good.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Watching later and thoroughly looking forward to it!

I have a feeling though that they probably would have done brilliantly to end of the last episode which was good enough to be a movie.

    Yep.

That final episode was low-key to say the least.

Confirmed. They should have ended on the second last episode.

The entire Season 8 of Game of Thrones was a waste of time. How excitingly everyone was waiting for the result of who'd be there on the Iron Throne but what came out was way too ordinary. Very weak writing I must say and by far it looks like we wasted all these years anticipating for the next season to be aired.

As with the starbucks cup the week before - which people were crying about on social media - I don't get it. If 'edited in' - why waste the time - if just there because it was forgotten....who cares?

I'm obviously not a GoT follower but from what I've read and heard from friends....this is a show that perhaps went one season too long.

The real problem was it was about three seasons too short. The show runners tried to cram 4 to 5 seasons of material into 2 seasons, one of which was only 7 episodes, the other only 6.

As far as I'm concerned, it went from possibly the greatest show in TV history to one I'm not sure I can recommend to nonwatchers. It's a bit (not exactly) like Stephen King's Dark Tower series. In the final book, King brings the narrative to a full stop and literally tells the reader to not finish the book; that you'll probably be disappointed if you do. That's how I feel about seasons 7 and 8. Seven was bad. Eight? You can set it directly on fire. If you can stop watching after season 6 (maybe season 5...), then watch it. Otherwise, forget the show exists.

I'm not even sure if I'll read the final books...if Martin ever finishes them.

Let me answer that Dan, "not even at gunpoint".

PS l believe that that movie revolved around what is left of the avengers team going back in time and knocking off his, (the dude with the nice glove) ancesters in the hope that they get lucky and knock off enough so he cannot change time to bring them back.

And after doing so back to the pool of green stuff, and torching that, at the end credits some of it manages to slither its way back up, and start the whole ancestory thing again.

Correct me if l am wrong.

PPS l was considering the female Captain America, as a rental, but the plot was so predictable and cliche ridden, l would have had to gauge my eyes out with spoons if l had, so didn't.

Second, never sit in the back of a bus with him, follow him into a dark alley, or accept a drink from him that you didn't witness him open.

It was as close to sublime as it could get for me.

Look, the plot is...thin. I don't want to spoil the movie for others, but the main plot device is a crutch for lazy writers. It's the "quantum physics" of plot devices.

That said, I don't watch Marvel movies for plot. I want to see shit blow up and witness my favorite characters come to life. I'm there as much to connect with the characters as I am my own childhood. Marvel absolutely nailed this. They have it down to a science.

My only complaint was the All Female Avengers scene. It was forced and didn't make sense. It momentarily took me out of the movie. Further, why didn't Capt. Marvel just put on the gauntlet?

By the way, good luck with that Robert Pattinson Batman debacle coming your way.

Yeah, the Fem Squad scene was forced. But I agree. It's about as good as it could get. The last 45 minutes, I don't think I blinked.

And why didn't Starlord use the gauntlet? Or Thor? Lots of people there could survive the effects.

I would have paid $10 to see a three hour loop of Captain America say "Avengers Assemble".

And Captain America had a couple of moments that were iconic. Damn, if he were real, I'd follow that man into battle, no matter the odds.

You're right, Marvel nailed it. Did you see the tribute to Stan Lee as the lead in on the Captain Marvel movie? It was a tear jerker.

I agree about going to see the Marvel movies for the action and visuals, rather than a strong plot. It's like a three hour roller coaster ride.

I haven't watched Captain Marvel yet. Larson turns me off. I'll rent it when it comes out. I have a three year old, a lawn that seems to need mowed every f*cking day, and a wife who prefers wine bars over movie theatres. I don't get to the cinema all that often.

(I do, however, have a pretty slick Dolby Atmos home theatre setup in my basement. Rather than go to the movies, I tend to wait and either rent or buy them. I make the popcorn and make my wife buy it from ME at 120,000% markup. BTW, don't buy the hot dogs at my concession stand. Just a tip from your Uncle Dan.)

No. You know how you know? By watching his previous work. Why can't DC get casting right?

Marvel's casting track record is beyond superb. Even when you think they've lost their minds ("What do you mean the fat guy from Parks & Rec???) they absolutely nail it ("Nobody could've played Star-Lord better!").

See above. Rental. A horror movie version of the Superman mythos? It has potential, but I'm not much of a horror fan. Real life is typically enough of a horror show for me.

Growing up, I was the kid who wasn't allowed to see Friday the 13th, but was allowed to watch 9 1/2 Weeks. My dad always thought parents got that backwards. "Nudity and sex are natural. In fact, you've been nude and someday you'll probably have sex, if you stop picking your nose. Hopefully, you'll never hack someone's arms off and wear their skin as a suit. That's not natural." -- An actual conversation I had with my dad when I was 11.

I'm looking forward to Spider-Man. I'm still waiting for a sufficient Marvel treatment of their flagship character. I don't think they'll get it right until they age him out of his teenage years.

Dark Phoenix is going to bomb. I've never thought of the character as a lead and I think we're going to find out that Sophie Turner isn't a lead either.

Michael Fassbinder and a few other actors are so good they may save it.

But...I have stopped watching all the super hero shows on TV. The "teenage angst in an adult character CW style" is overpowering, and it isn't worth slogging through for 30 seconds of super hero action.

DC can get casting right. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman were excellently cast. It's the writing that sucks.

A series of iconic visual moments strung together isn't the same as a Story. And that's what DC has to learn.

Did you cry during Endgame? I sure did, and twice I almost yelled when Captain America showed us what he was made of.......and watching Tony Stark give everything was heartfelt.

I felt much like I did with Logan. Maybe the two best Superhero movies ever made.

58% is fine. And 73% from viewers. So better than average.

I have a deep seated love for Superman. It's all about childhood fantasies.

I'm more curious about how it will affect me.

                              I'll see it tomorrow.

My wife agreed to see Endgame with me again on Monday. I'm such a child.

If you had super powers, such as super speed and super reactions, you'd need to have super fast neural connections which would suggest having a super intellect - one so far advanced from normal that you couldn't be considered human (yes, I know the real superman wasn't from this planet).

The point is, you probably wouldn't feel that close a connection to the human species and that could well impact on your opinion of what constituted the "common good". Your overwhelming feeling would probably be one of loneliness if not intense isolation.

Sooner or later, I imagine you'd have to leave this world and search for others like you or you'd become super mad.

This is something I considered. They used to say: "As strong as Superman, as brainy as Batman" when they introduced a new superhero. But. the fact is, no one would be more intelligent than Superman.

Every super power creates problems. I mean problems in physics.

Super strength like Superman? Your body would have to be as dense as a neutron star. You would weigh millions of pounds.

Super speed? You would need to be super dense as well. A human who could run at the speed of sound...would need tendons, muscles, and bone strong enough to endure the fast changes in momentum. Inertia would be a big problem. You would need oxygen at a rate a hundred times that of a normal human.

Fly? Imagine that you magically (because you'd get it no other way) could fly at any speed You're an ordinary person who can fly. How fast could you fly before birds would be a major problem? Or insects? How high could you fly before the temperature would really bother you? Fly at 100 miles an hour and tree limbs would be lethal, telephone wires....

By the way, an interesting bit of news. You can dream that you can fly, have super strength....be intangible..

But you can't dream that you can run at super speed. Why? You still have the same brain. It's the same reason you can't mentally count at a super human speed. Our brain limits what the speed that we can imagine.
In fact, right now, imagine you are running as fast as possible. Arms and legs pumping..how fast can you go? Probably not much faster than a human can really run. Our speed of thought has real limitations.

By the way, even as a kid, I thought the most impossible thing about Superman was that he would look exactly like us. The same organs, the same bones and musculature. A face that looks human. Why is he the exact same size as we are?

I used to love reading Superman comics as a kid. But it's a fantasy character like Peter Pan. It's fun as long as you give it absolutely no thought. Remember, these characters were mostly created when comics were sold to 5 year olds.

Yes, our physical structure is adapted to our environment - and to our natural abilities. Most superhero powers are an exaggeration of existing human abilities which would require, at the very least, a different anatomical structure.

That's why, IMO, Groundhog Day works so much better as a piece of thought-provoking sci-fi. It changed the environment rather than the man.

Not to mention the unmentionable, what happens when superman,....well,....l guess we can say he never gets sick, but he still has to eat, so if he had explosive diarrhea, then what?

Probably go out into the field and fill in the km hole later on?

And how can he assimilate food, when his cells are super strong.

And if he eats a dodgy chicken, and is sick, and cannot make it to the field in time, l guess his bathroom would be destroyed a few times.

It would be like one of us trying to live off,....well, not sure if cells 100 times stronger than normal could assimilate anything, unless it shared the same molecular density.

And sex, certain death pretty much covers it,....bury them, nah.

I expect that Deadpool will probably mention this, but yeah, Superman is a fascinating idea, but it has problems.

Or Superman got a heap of diamonds and fused them together so he had a viable toilet,.....l will go now.

I think some do tend to forget that...it's fun if you can allow your mind/imagination to run free and ignore serious thought. Most 5 yr olds know it's 'pretend.' However, at 5 I firmly believed there were dinosaurs and cowboys...they just lived somewhere else....

                              Saw Brightburn this afternoon.

It was well done. But it's hard to describe. It isn't in any way a Superhero movie...and as a horror movie, it has few real scares.

But as a psychological thriller it delivers.

You are shown scenes over and over again, where the evil Superboy could have been saved, and wasn't. Where huge blunders were made by ignorant well meaning people.

But it did show what the world would think if such a person existed. Many would simply refuse to believe it...and everyone who did...would be scared out of their minds.

The ending scene showed the possibility of an entire superhero/horror universe being created. The actor that portrayed the kid was utterly convincing.

"If a psychopath grew up discovering he had godlike powers" That's the movie.

I used to wonder how someone would deal with a great super power.

I think at first, the kid would use the abilities to spy on naked girls, steal money, and punish people that bothered them. For most, the temptation to show the world your abilities would be too great a temptation. And that would be the beginning of the end...fear, hero worship, and the worldwide perception that you are a threat...would end up destroying either the gifted individual...or the planet.

But if you could keep your abilities a secret....

You would soon tire of using your abilities to exploit others. Eventually, you'd think of it as a great responsibility. And you'd use it for a greater good.

But I have to tell you, if it was me...I'd get a costume. even if nobody ever saw it. Weird, what we find out about ourselves.

Just curious: is this a blanket statement? Do you not think personality type would affect the outcome? Ergo, we'd have the same outcome from Mother Teresa as we would from Ted Bundy?

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

It's not so much personality type as how evolved a person is. What is their potential?

You've seen Groundhog Day, haven't you?

Over a long period of time, Bill Murray's character evolves. At first, he seduces women, steals money, and leads a carefree life. Then he becomes depressed...and eventually evolves to spend his time helping others.

I think most of us are like that. We would get bored being selfish. Even killing people (if you were Superman) would get boring. How long would you want people to fear you? Worship you? Wouldn't that eventually seem unprofitable..unfulfilling?

Very few people are at the extremes of Ted Bundy or Mother Teresa.

If you had the powers of Superman then you would be impregnable, unstoppable. then what would be the greater good, it would be your your perception of it.

You could suck up all the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and blow it into space and slow global warming. You could force the world to go vegetarian to stop deforestation and methane excess. You could tell the world to cut back on having too many babies. You could do this all by making threats of repercussions.if they don't comply. Remember the Superman movie where he threw all the nuclear weapons into the sun.

Would it be for the greater good, absolutely it would. But many people would be resentful of your interference in their destiny. Many would hate you.

So with the absence of aliens and mythological beings to fight, would you just apprehend criminals and save people from natural and man made disasters or go the whole hog and heal the planet?
I think you raise an important question. "What is good, and who determines that?"

By the way, there have been several Superman stories in the comics where he (and sometimes the Justice League) became authoritarian leaders of the world, purely with the intention of making it better.
It always ends badly. No matter the intention.

But to tell you the truth, I don't know what I would do if I had Superman like powers. I know I'd hide it. Save airplanes from crashing, that sort of thing.

But would I stop tornadoes? floods? famine? End dictatorships? No idea.

But I know this...no matter how powerful you are, you cannot change human nature.
And in a real world, if a Superman destroyed all nuclear weapons, every country that had them would consider it an act of war.

Question about Superman: You seem more clued up on him than me.

In the comics, you see Superman grow up from a boy to adulthood, there it stops. It's obvious that he ages but was it ever explained if he would eventually die of old age or not? After all, he is indestructible. Would there eventually be Decrepitoldman flying around?

There have been several versions in the comics. In one version, he lives nearly forever.

In a different version, he lives a normal life span.

In one version, he has children who are half as powerful as he is, and with each generation, they become less powerful. But the first one stays young throughout.

I believe that Bill Gates has got the cure for the climate, stop the end is nigh one, by creating a new problem, but each their own.

What would Claude do,...probably set up a series on satellites to monitor any Criptionite metours and send in a special taskforce, to remove it.

And create a special UN mandate to have a Crispy Creme store on every continent on the planet.

Shoot a couple of actors that are pushing the CC cult, but that is probably more my wish!

As far as the ending itself goes, I think it was an attempt to give the show something of a happy ending. It started with the Stark family, and ended with them.

I'm not entirely convinced that a happy ending was actually appropriate with a show like Game Of Thrones though. I agree with the idea that it should've been at least a couple of seasons longer.

Anyway, it is what it is. Like it or lump it.

        * Those eagerly awaiting the next Star Wars movie might like to take note of the way these people treated fans of GoT. A cautionary tale perhaps.

Oh, I'm well aware D&D shortchanged GoT to move on to Star Wars. I think Disney is going to rue the day it signed them on. They're great when they have source material to adapt. They have difficulty finding their own asses when they have to use their own imaginations.

I've never been more disappointed by a show that i actively followed. 8 years of build up and anticipation for absolutely nothing, what a sad, anti-climatic disaster. I didn't even watch the final 10 minutes of the episode.

Hard to comprehend all of the gnashing of teeth on social media. If you are that heavily, emotionally invested in any TV show, it's time to reevaluate your life - or, possibly just get something resembling one.

The first 7 seasons were entertaining. The last season blew chunks. No big whoop.

Somehow, my psyche, bank account, and existence have all survived unscathed.

It was good, but also my least favorite of the three. The fight scenes were excellent, but the novelty has worn off a bit. The story is pretty thin. There's so much to the world of John Wick to explore. I wish they would've spent a little more time developing the depth of the world.

Again, I liked it, but the first two are superior if only because they introduce us to a refreshing new world and character.

Marc Dacascos steals a couple of scenes. However, that may only matter to me.

There's another cautionary tale, this time for HBO.

They currently have several spin-offs from GoT in development. Given the backlash against how GoT ended, they need to give some serious thought to exactly how popular these spin-offs are going to be, especially given how much money they're going to cost even before a single episode is aired.

I thought the finale was really good.

But I will say that the season felt rushed overall. The resolutions would have felt more earned and played better if they had taken more time to get there. That's where the show thrived. They really needed those 4 extra alepisodes
