Apple announces new iPhone

Strangely, Apple released a new lower-priced iPhone model, the SE (second generation). It's powered by the same A13 processor found on the iPhone 11, and ditches the Face ID in favour of Touch ID.

But it could've been released at better timing, when people aren't locked down, and we're not in an economic recession. The current conditions just doesn't bode well for sales, and people unlikely to flock to retail stores (which are closed by the way).

I am just wondering what type of a marketing department Apple has. This is, certainly, not the time to make this type of an announcement.

Why not ? Please explain your reason why they should not announce it ?

I am thinking this is the perfect time to start the "pre-order-your-new-toy." People are bored, looking for new things, seems like in many places the stay-at-home orders will expire soon (again, hope and boredom).

Yes, many people have lost their jobs for the duration of the stay-at-home orders but most will get back to making a living soon. Plus, there are credit cards that have pent-up desires.

Add in the Stimulus checks and some people will blow the money on anything. Here is a link to a article in the NY Post about what some are wasting it on. Also the article dose mention some people paid bills with it. https://nypost.com/2020/04/15/stimul...tripper-poles/

NY Post has hands-down the best newspaper headlines of all time.

Too bad Joe Exotic is in jail right now. He probably could've moved a few more tigers in this time.

    @ Medon.. Same question.

Did you know that the greater majority of iPhone sales are "not" made by Apple? Matter of fact I doubt you know what three companies actually make the majority of iPhone sales to consumers. If you did know - you would not be "wondering" what type of marketing department Apple has. Hint, Apple does "not" need to market the iPhone - the three companies that make the majority iPhone sales will market the iPhone.

Trying new things and adapting to this situation that our world is facing is a good thing. I guess Apple will see how successful their strategy will be or not.

Also, when it comes to their products, it's not like they can't sell those phones right after the tough times will be over. They don't need to be a massive success now.

I missed this earlier .now is as good a time to be successful if you can. And it seem way out of apples normal stratagy to offer a cellphone priced for the general public instead of just for the fans

Now is the time for anyone with something people want to buy and can buy..to seek as much as they can in be more successfull.

Only way to keep the economy from totally collapsing.

many people have lost their jobs for the duration of the stay-at-home orders
I keep seeing that posted here - and it's only part of the story. Not everyone has lost a job - there are many people working from home - earning their regular salaries - and any buying they do is being done online. There is also a lot of hiring here for temp jobs that pay pretty well.

What better time to release an 'economy level' phone than when people who didn't NEED money just got 'free money'? Very smart - but that's what Apple does.

In the next 2-4 weeks people will be getting weekly unemployment checks PLUS weekly extra $600 payments PLUS a one-time payment....and the unemployment amounts will be retroactive. My guess is there will be many 'special sales' competing for attention in the next month or so in online ads.

I know many people are having a hard time - but I also know many who receive these checks will go out and spend them right away - and I expect Apple will sell a lot of phones.

Due to the current pandemic I will no longer be shaking hands or giving hugs. You may wave, bow to me or give me the finger...your choice.

In my area, the 1200/person in the household started to arrive. I think it was part of iphone's calculations. It is not a loan and you get it without having lost your job.

The new Apple iPhone SE 2020, available April 17 2020, Average retail is $399.00

To compare prices on almost anything I like to start with Google Shopping first to get an overall idea of what is popular. Google Shopping searches a wide range of retailers, including biggies such as Amazon, Currys PC World, John Lewis and Tesco. It also searches less traditional retailers such as eBay and daily deals site Groupon.

The drawback is the best results require a little manual work.
How to use Google Shopping to your advantage:
    1. Search for a product. Google will list relevant items sold by multiple retailers.
    2. Use the filters on the left-hand side. These let you filter results by price, retailer and more. You can also choose whether to view second-hand items.
    3. Select the item you're after and click 'compare prices from xx shops'. This will show you the full list of retailers.
    4. Compare prices. You can sort results by 'base price' (without postage) or 'total price' (including postage) - helping you decide whether to buy in store or online.
There are apps that do similar comparisons:
    joinhoney.com being the most popular.

Here is a list of 30 apps for different categories of products from LifeHack (not affiliated)

When I used the above methods I found the new iPhone for as little as $185.00.

Took about 5-10 minutes to save about $215.00.

I forget what year Apple announced its first generation SE, but I believe it was also in March.

Regardless, the 5 was a great phone (same build as the SE). If only the screens stopped getting bigger. You look back and compared to your older iphones and think, "How did I ever use such a small screen??"

  • It's the best time to launch the new IPhone. Most people are glued to their handsets these days.

Most people are at home still receiving their regular salaries, without the expense of fuel to commute to and from work. That's surplus income buddy, to spend on entertainment and new gadgets to improve your overall entertainment experience.

5G rollout is also increasing upload and download speeds, to improve your online experience. All mobile phone companies have to launch their new handsets to keep up with the new trend or they will be left in the dark ages.

So it's perfect timing to market the new IPhones, at a lower price point. You better get your new IPhone now, before that price point increases in future.

I do not know but I am really comfortable with Face ID but I am really thinking it's kind of thing which shouldn't be main factor in that, Touch ID maybe something like deciding factor for that people anyway for many many reasons

Yeah it's definitely not a good time to launch their latest iPhone, however lockdown and closed stores probably won't stop apple fan boys from ordering it online.

the new founf popularity and need for facetime and other..make it a great time to release a lower priced version of the lastest iphone .. not a 1200 dollar I phone 12 with minor upgrades .that when the social distancing is done .. you will get people taking part in the iphone release event .. everyone like to make fun of iphone users for

it is easy to see what apple is doing ..realising a product perfect for the current market conditions ..this is not a product for apple fanboys .. but for people who need an affordable smartphone that can run a video chat app ..it may blow up on apple .. if they don't allow people to fix these or upgrade them from time to time ..

I am using Iphone right now but I hate a couple of features.

    1. The inability to save files on Iphone without any application. I know it is possible with documents app or another but that app is acting weird now. It is hiding files.
    2. The annoying 20% left and 10% charge left notifications which can not be disabled. I know this is not annoying for many people as they do not use their mobile phones frequently. With heavy browsing the charge will be drained in a couple of hours. Then that annoying notification comes twice. @ 20% and 10%. The notification stops whatever you are doing and fills the screen. They could have done it with a few text pop at the top.

Unless these features are avoided, I am not falling into iPhone again.

People havn't touched the new $2000 iphones, since there is a price limit for a phone, and older phones sales have been booming.

So they are responding to market demand, albeit late, and at a bad time, but like Kay has said, there are still plenty of people with money.

And in AU, there are plenty of unemployed getting a g..v, windfall. Hopefully some will spend it wisely but some will probably spend it.

Electronic stores in AU, or at least for the moment in Vic, are open, but l am not sure what there traffic numbers are, as they keep closing early and l haven't been able to get in.

But l have seen some big discounts.
